Recently on an all 8 Track radio program on WFMU (to check out this amazingly cool radio station go to WFMU-FM 91.1/East Orange, NJ; 90.1), several reknowned 8 Track collectors discussed the fact that those 8 tracks commonly referred to as bootlegs would more properly be called pirate tapes. The distinction is a bootleg is meant as a sneaked or stolen copy of a live performance or some other unoffficail recording such as a studio session, while a pirate is simply a copy of a previously released album. Swamp Rat intends to stick to the moniker bootleg for these tapes as more commonly understood.
This beautiful bootleg tape, Songs From American Graffite(sic) is perhaps my favorite bootleg. Look carefully: it's a beautiful white woman superimposed over a beautiful black woman.
This bootleg tape of Dionne Warwick's Golden Hits exhibits amazing 70s design style. It was made by SDS Inc. 310 W. Frederick, Gaffney, SC 29340 is the address on the tape.
This is a bootleg of Uriah Heep's The Magician's Birthday. Peace dudes. (Admit it, bootlegs are cool!)
This is a various artists compilation tape with some swell tunes on it. Wildfire, Mandy, etc.
It says 1975 Odyssey productions and mfg. by Liberty Productions, Inc-Georgia Division Edgewood Road, Rt. IV-Box 145, GA, 31501.
This handsome Kiss Alive Vol II bootleg was made by ERA Record Corp. in Nashville.
I have several bootlegs by this company with this same cover and some with other cool pictures. All the ones I have are black artists: Marvin Gaye, The Supremes, Funkadelic, The O'jays, Al Green and Otis Redding. The company was called King David Records. The address was 60 E. 42nd St. N.Y. N.Y. 10017.
This King David bootleg seems to picture Jimi Hendrix while the tape is of Donald Byrd. There is absolutely no info on it, but I'm pretty sure King David made it. It has their quality and design style. And they seem to do exclusively black artists.
This great bootleg tape is called Road Music. Dig the dame. Great for the long haul. Phantom 309 makes Swamp Rat cry every time.
This handsome, but enormous Carly Simon bootleg was contributed by John Winnard of My Friggin' Website . Check it out to hear Steely Dan on the midi.
