This shot was selected for the NMRA 2006 calendar, and appears in the month of May.  A total of 120 shots were submitted this year, so I'm pretty tickled that I got in for a second year in a row.  The picture also won "Honorable Mention" in the Walthers 2006 Catalog "Magic of Model Railroading" contest.
With the day's work almost complete, the Bona Vista Railroad's new SW7 slowly approaches the grade crossing at County Road AA on Gerry Leone's HO scale railroad.
Like last year's calendar shot, this one was also taken with my Olympus C-4000 4-megapixel digital camera.  Again, like last year, the scene was lit by a single 75-watt incandescent bulb  mounted on the ceiling; there was a white "fill" card to the left of the camera to illuminate the engine's grill.  The exposure was 10 seconds at f/11.

Last year's shot was taken at this same spot on the layout, only the camera was on the right side of the road and aimed toward the left of the frame.

What's the story with the little man at the grade crossing?  He was left there from the shot I took which appeared on the cover of the January 2006 issue of Railroad Model Craftsman... yet another shot that was staged at this spot, which is on the very edge of the layout.

In the background you can see Igot's Gas.  The road appears to go under an arch of trees with more of the town visible on the other side.  In reality, the arch of trees is covering a mirror, and what appears to be more of the town is actually a reflection of the wall behind the camera.

The only Photoshopping done on this shot was to add the exhaust.
