This article, published in the November, 2001 issue of Railroad Model Craftsman magazine, got its inspiration from this caboose, which I weathered and which you can see slightly larger on the Finished Scenes page. Once I knew the techniques worked, I started all over with a new caboose (actually two of them) and photographed each step.
Here's the set-up for the opening shot of the article.  It was staged just outside the town of Froton on my layout, on the "B. Chubb Operational Hardware" industrial spur.  The camera is my Minolta X-700 SLR, shooting Ektachrome 64T film, which is color balanced for the two photofloods.  If you look closely, you'll be able to see I was using microphone boom stands from my old band to hold up the lights.
Here's the tabletop setup I used for the close-up shots.  Same camera, same photofloods.  For a background I used a speckled piece of cloth I borrowed from Renay.  And yes, those are my fingers in the photos in the article.  To shoot the close-ups in which I needed two hands, I used the self-timer on the camera.
