FOIL Requests by E Mail
In August, Governor Pataki approved legislation that will allow people to submit
requests for documents through the "Freedom of Information Law" (FOIL) by E mail. Government agencies and entities should
be able to receive requests for records from teh public and transmit records by means of email, which should make these requests
faster, and less costly to the public. Currently, towns can charge $.25 per page for copies of documents, but the emailed
documents will be free.
Government agencies and entities should have request forms available for the public on line no later
than October 24, 2006.
In another law effective immediately, Governor Pataki signed legislation that broadens the authority
of the courts to award attorney's fees when government agencies fail to comply with the FOIL law. For more
