Rodney King:
Nonlethal Weapons vs. Conventional Police
Tactics
Length of Seminar: Adaptable from Two to Eight Hours
Target Audience: Supervisors, Trainers, Managers, Executive Law Enforcement Officers, and the Attorneys Who Defend Them
Faculty: Greg Meyer, Police Tactics Consultant
Course Overview: This seminar will equip police supervisors, managers, trainers, executive law enforcement officers, and attorneys who defend law enforcement actions with an injury reduction philosophy and practical policy and training guidelines for the deployment and use of nonlethal or less-than-lethal weapons in nonshooting situations. Also, issues surrounding the prevention of in-custody deaths will be examined.
The Rodney King case will be discussed in detail by one of the expert witnesses (Mr. Meyer) who testified in the federal civil case. The results of his study of injuries which result from eight common police knockdown tools and tactics will be presented. Instruction will be in a multi-media format including videotapes, handouts, slides and hands-on demonstrations of selected devices.
Participants will receive an injury-based use-of-force continuum and a five-step outline for implementation, which will lead to fewer and less severe injuries for suspects and officers, and an improved agency image.
