Myst Island

Once you arrive on the island, simply explore, and look for clues as to what might have happened before you arrived. Get familiar with the different parts of the island ... each one of them has a purpose. Look for the note from Atrus to his wife, Catherine.

The History of Myst Island

Years ago, Atrus father, Gehn, took him to D'ni and instructed him in the Art of Writing. Through time, Atrus realized his father—who believed himself a god—was insane. Atrus fled, but was caught and imprisoned in their island mansion. There, he discovered the Riven book. On Riven, he met an intruiging young woman—Catherine. Catherine introduced Atrus to a simple, beautiful Age called Myst. Atrus and Catherine joined to trap Gehn on Riven, then began a new life on Myst.

For the complete story, read Myst: The Book of Atrus.

  • After following the note's instructions, you'll have some idea of what to do. Find the Myst linking books in their "places of protection". To access the books, you need to solve a few puzzles. Pay close attention to Atrus' mentioning of the tower rotation.
  • Look for the library. What do you see there? Some writings, perhaps?
  • You will also find a red book and a blue book in the library, by themselves and on separate sides of the room. What could they be? You should probably check them out!
  • Have you opened both books yet? Hmm. Two brothers, both asking for pages?Interesting.
  • When you followed Atrus' note of instruction, you counted a few marker switches. These are necessary part of the Tower Rotation. Look in the library for a way to rotate the tower.
  • By rotating the tower to the correct positions, you'll get a hint.
  • The Ages you must venture to and explore are Stoneship, Channelwood, Mechanical, and Selenetic.

Getting to the Ages of Myst

Getting to the Stoneship Age

To get to the Stoneship Age, you must raise the ship on Myst island beside the dock. The key is some dates (the day/month/year type), the planetarium, and the pillar walkway in front of the library. Don't know where to start looking? Make sure you looked at my mention of marker switches and the tower rotation under "Myst Island". Make sure you take a peek in Atrus' journals, too. Somthing helpful may just be under your nose...

Getting to the Channelwood Age

To get to the Channelwood Age, start looking in Atrus' cabin. Atrus made clues accessible, you know. Did you read what I mentioned about marker switches and the tower rotation under "Myst Island"? You need an elevator. Think about it...

Getting to the Mechanical Age

To get to the Mechanical Age, take a look at the big sunken gears. You need to get the big gear open. Taked a look at my mention of the marker switches and the tower rotation under "Myst Island" above. Figure it out to get a clue. Work with that clue somewhere on the west side of the island. It should be pretty obvious, but the puzzle is tricky! Take care in this puzzle.

Getting to the Selenetic Age

To get to the Selenetic Age, go take a look at the small building across from the cabin. To know what to aim for, first take a look at my note on the marker switches and tower rotation under "Myst Island". Get it right and you'll get a clue.

Have you found the keyboard yet? Tinkered with the other nearby levers? You'll find a musical clue in one of Atrus' journals. This is one of the most challenging puzzles yet, so take your time!

The Stoneship Age

After arriving on Stoneship and looking around, you might notice that everything seems to be flooded with water. Is there some way to drain the water?
  • There are three areas to drain: a light house, two tunnels, and the bottom of a sunken ship.
  • Did you open the red or blue book in the library? Remember the brothers saying somthing about "red and blue pages?" Maybe you should look for some.
  • You have find the brother's bedrooms to find the pages.
  • You can only take one page at a time. However, you don't have to get both pages.
  • Found a page? Okay. Now you just have to find a way to get back to Myst Island...

Returning to Myst from Stoneship

I'll let you in on a secret. There's a hidden door down in the passageways. But it's awfully dark down there, don't you think?

  • You need to power up the lights.
  • Notice any wires overhead outside? Where do they lead?
  • You need a key to access the generator. It is below!
  • Got the lights on? Found the compass yet? Do you know which button to hit?
  • If the lights go out, you hit the wrong button (you need to crank up the generator again). Head to the telescope at the top of Stoneship for a clue of degrees.
  • If you hit the right button, you'll notice a new source of light. Do you have an idea as to where the Myst book might be?

The Channelwood Age

Everything in Channelwood is powered by water. Notice the tree houses above? I'll bet Sirrus and Achenar's bedrooms are up there. You'll need to power up one of those elevators.

  • Once you reach the second level, explore, but don't thrash! It's a bit of a maze up there, and clicking everywhere when you don't know where to go will usually get you nowhere.
  • Remember seeing a spiraling stair case when you first came to Channelwood? To access it from the bottom level, you must open it from the inside.
  • You must find the top of the staircase.
  • Found it? Hmm...there's a door locked across here, too. I'll bet there's a lever around here somewhere that'll open it up.

Once you open the door to the spiraling staircase (second level), you can access the bottom level and use the water to power a different elevator. How about the one up at the top of the stairway?

Look in the brothers' bedrooms for a red/blue page (whichever you want, but remember, you can't take both in one trip).

Returning to Myst from Channelwood

Ready to go back to Myst? You'll have to find another elevator. But you'll have to figure some way to cross that gap in the walkway...

The Mechanical Age

Look carefully for the brother's pages in their throne rooms, where you'll notice more signs of the two brother's lust for riches and power.

Getting Back to Myst from Mechanical

Look in Achenar's throne room for a machine. This machine will teach you a fundamental skill necessary to get home.

  • There are four symbols that you must enter into the podium near where you arrived to access the Myst linking book. Fortunately, Atrus placed copies of these symbols on two other islands that are nearby.
  • Notice the big track that runs around the fortress?
  • You need to rotate the fortress. Atrus built a special machine somewhere in the fortress that will give you some practice.
  • Got the hang of it? Now you just need to find the real controls. Did you notice the elevator at the back of the fortress?
  • Still can't find the controls? If you're moving vertically, think up.

The Selenetic Age

Get out of the spaceship, and, as always, explore. You won't have to look far for the brother's pages. They're fairly easy to find. Like the Mechanical Age, the real puzzle is getting back to Myst Island.

Getting Back to Myst from Selenetic

  • Notice anything around the island? Look for something in areas with distinct, noticable sounds.
  • Notice that big thing out in the water? I wonder what all those dishes are for.
  • You have to find an order of sounds. Once you have found it, you can access the door near the spaceship.
  • Found the Maze Runner? Here comes the greatest puzzle of all.
  • You will find that a great labyrinth exists beneath the surface of this Age. You must navigate it successfully to find the Myst linking book!
  • Before you just start exploring everywhere, think about the previous puzzle you solved. This puzzle, too, deals with sounds.
  • Notice the different noises that sound when the Maze Runner stops? They will guide you, if you listen closely...

D'ni (endgame)

By this point, you should've given at least one of the brothers one page from each Age of Myst. They will give you some instructions. Listen closely!
  • Should you trust either of the brothers? Think about what you've seen and heard.
  • Remember them saying something about "not touching the green book"? Are you curious? It wouldn't hurt to take a peek.
  • Before you link to D'ni, look for that page Atrus was asking for.
  • You'll find a clue in one of the brother's bedrooms on Stoneship and Channelwood.
  • Got the page? Now you must decide who to trust.

Rime

This section only pertains to realMYST.

Once you've returned from D'ni, you'll notice a journal lying on the floor. Read it through and look for any clues as to how to access the Rime book.

  • Maybe you just need to think and take something for a "spin."
  • When the doors are open, the answer is just a page away.

Once you link into Rime, you'll find yourself looking out over a cold icy sea with Atrus' hut nearby.

  • Inside the hut, you'll find a Myst linking book and another door, but it appears to be sealed.
  • What was the one aspect of this Age that stood out uniquely to Atrus?
  • Don't forget to leave until you read more of Atrus' writings...there's another interesting journal nearby.
