Margaret gave birth to her seated daughter, Andrea Russell Humes, 2 months after the death of her husband Andrew Russell Humes, in 1847. On the anniversary of his death that next year, Margaret wrote a letter to her only son Thomas William Humes (then 5 years old), to remind him always of the proud example of a man his father was.

Margaret later married Dr. Joeseph W.J. Niles, in 1852, and bore 3 more children.
She was buried in her family cemetary between her father and first husband.
