One of the brightest lights of the world was extinguished last night when the shocking news of the tragedy in a tunnel under the Seine in Paris was released.

Why am I effected by the death of this product of an archaic Monarchy? I really cannot answer that. I am not a follower of the fops of Royalty but I, like others, met this charming woman when her wedding captured my attention so many years ago. At nineteen, she was the epitome of beauty. Not the haughty, cold, vinegary beauty one is accustomed to seeing in Royalty, but warm, lovely, sparkling, effervescent, and charming beauty.

I have always been captivated by the dichotomy between the cold-fish that was her husband and the gamine shyness and delicate beauty that was her own visage. I took notice of the shabby way she was used, used as little more than the receptacle for the Royal Seed, used to produce progeny for an otherwise unproductive and cold-blooded toad.

The jug-eared mug of the Prince was always ameliorated by the breathtaking vision of loveliness that was Princess Diana. She seemed to accentuate her wardrobe and she sported the most incredible array of hats that I have ever seen, each one framing her comeliness and setting-off her shimmering beauty.

It was the way she interacted with the camera that captivated me. She was real, not practiced. She was warm, not graveyard cold. She was humorous, not grim and dank. She was animated, not taciturn and stoical. She reacted to her environment and did not remain unchanged by her surroundings. She was shy and often did not look directly into the lens, yet the eye of the beholder was riveted upon her aura.

Her projects, those activities that so annoyed the House of Windsor, were what endeared me to her. Cancer, AIDS, homelessness, children of wars, and lately her championing of the innocent victims of the thoughtless sowing of landmines in contested areas.

My heart goes out to her two sons and one can only hope that her attempts at teaching them to experience humanity will suffice to armor them against what is sure to follow from the Windsors.

Diana, I will miss you, and your passing will darken the world, for the loss of the talents and the love you brought to it.
