PROCESS

Getting Ready

1. First, print out the Gathering Information Worksheet.

2. Look at the five pictures below and decide which two you want to use in your brochure.

Gathering Information

1. Click on the pictures above to gather information about each one. Write down the information on your Gathering Information Worksheet. You do not need to write complete sentences at this time. Just take notes and write information in your own words.

Writing the Rough Draft

1. Print out the Graphic Organizer and use it to organize your notes.

2. After you fill in the graphic organizer you are ready to write a rough draft of the information for the brochure. For each painting you should write four paragraphs. Use complete sentences to write down the information in your own words.

3. Check your rough draft for spelling and grammar errors and make any necessary changes.

4. Have a partner check your work before you go on to the next step.

Making the Final Product

1. Now you are ready to make the brochure. Before you begin, ask your teacher for directions on saving your work on the computer. Your final product will look something like this:

3. Copy and Paste the illustrations from Step 2 under Getting Ready above into your brochure. Save your document.

4. Type in the final drafts of your painting information in the spaces provided.

5. Have a partner check your work and be sure you make any necessary changes to it before you go on to the next step. Save your document.

6. Now print out your final product. Congratulations! You're done. You made a brochure! Great Job!

TEACHER'S NOTES

A small group of students are shown here trying out the American Revolution Webquest in the Technology Lab of Westmere Elementary School. An overhead projector was used to guide the students through the webquest. Five one hour sessions allowed enough time for these intermediate to advanced level Limited English Proficient - English Language Learners to complete the task. It was not necessary to spend each of these session at the computer. The students spent time filling in the graphic organizers and writing the rough drafts of the brochure outside of the lab. Parental permission was granted to use these photos on the internet.

The tasks given in this webquest address many New York state standards in social studies, English language arts, art, and English as a second language. The content used in the Gathering Information phase was modified for use by Limited English Proficient English Language Learners (LEP-ELL's) in the ESL classroom. Specifically, the section accessed by clicking on the "Basic" button will direct the learner to modified text with a glossary. However, this webquest could also be used by mainstream classroom students who are learning about the American Revolution.

Materials Needed

Successful completion of this webquest requires access to a computer with internet capabilities, Microsoft Word software, and either a black and white or color printer. The documents labeled Gathering Information Worksheet, Graphic Organizer, Brochure Template, Grade Sheet and the example brochure were all saved in Microsoft Word 6.0/95. If your computer has at least this software or a newer version of Word, you should be able to view the documents.

Mini-Lessons

This webquest is not intended as a stand alone unit. Rather, it should accompany a unit on the Revolutionary War period of American history. The teacher may wish to provide mini-lessons on the following topics prior to or during the students involvement in the activities.

persuasive writing, brochures, the language of advertisements

copying a picture from the internet and pasting it into a Microsoft Word document

copyrighted information and giving credit to authors, painters, websites

saving a document to disk or a student folder on a network

the writing process including peer editing, writing from a story web, complete sentences, paragraph formation

the grade sheet included in this webquest
