Reiki is a very simple and beautiful hands-on energy healing technique. It is an ancient science, which was re-discovered in the sacred texts of the Healing Buddha and Lotus Sutras by Mikao Usui. This oral tradition has been handed down through generations from teacher to student. Beatutiful in its simplicity, it enhances your meditative and spiritual practice. Reiki opens the pathway to reclaiming your innate ability to improve your health and bring your life more fully into balance.

The name Reiki originates from Japanese REI (spirit) and KI (energy, life force).

Reiki utilizes spiritual, or universal, energy to assist the healing process. Healing can occur on physical, emotional or spiritual levels. Reiki as a modern healing method was initiated at the beginning of the 20th century by Dr. Mikao Usui (1865 – 1926), a Japanese Buddhist monk, but it is possible to trace the origins of Reiki back to earlier Buddhist healing practices. Usui Sensei transmitted his knowledge to several students, the most well-known in the west was Mrs. Hawayo Takata of Hawaii.

Reiki is not a religion. You do not have to believe in any one system of beliefs to give or receive Reiki. This healing modality is practiced and taught by people of all beliefs and faiths. Christians, Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, atheists and agnostics can all learn, practice, and receive Reiki.

In reiki, the teacher is referred to as master -- as is common in Asian traditions. It is important to clarify that the reiki master designation does not mean the teacher has necessarily achieved a high level of spiritual attainment. It simply means the teacher (reiki master) is able to pass attunements which open the student's meridians and channels so that he or she will experience an increase in the energy the student absorbs from the universe. This extra energy flow is automatically transferred from the practitioner to the client.

First Degree Reiki

The structure of the class covers the history, initiation and integration, treating yourself, and treating others. The class lasts for one day or two mornings and/or afternoons/evenings with a follow-up 21 days later.  You will receive a Certificate of Completion (necessary to advance to the next level) and a Reiki, First Degree Practitioner's Manual. The fee is $150.

When you register, you will be provided a class outline and a suggested reading list. It is expected that you will read at least one of the books on the reading list prior to the start of the class. In this way more class time is spent in discussing and exploring actual hands-on self-treatments. You will also perform a treatment on a fellow student and participate in a group treatment session. Handouts that are part of the manual provided, include charts for self-treatments, treating people, plants and animal companions.

The reiki initiations are private (teacher:one student).  My experience of hands-on-healing and many years of training and passing attunements helps me understand and honor the sacredness and emotions the ceremony evokes for both for the student and the teacher.

You will learn the history of reiki, how to center and ground yourself, how to self-treat and how to offer reiki treatments to others -- people and animals as well as plants. Most importantly, you will leave knowing that the ability to heal is an innate part of who you are, and that you have the ability to do it.

Second Degree Reiki

You must have completed and demonstrated proficiency in Reiki First Degree to register in this class.

During the Second Degree reiki class, you are attuned to the three traditional reiki symbols, their pronounciation and how to draw each correctly.

You will learn how to use the symbols to give yourself treatments; and

You will learn how to heal at a distance (Distance Healing also called Non-Local Healing) by using the reiki symbols.  We will explore the various ways we can use the symbols while treating people at a distance and the use of symbols as a focus for uncovering, and releasing, emotional blocks.

Time is set aside for a thorough discussion of the ethics of healing others, both in person and at a distance. The ethics of charging or not charging for healing is also explored.  The book, "The Ethics of Healing" by Kylea Taylor is required reading. The time for this class can be structured to meet everyone's needs and is normally accomplished in one to two days. The cost of this class is $250.

Third Degree Reiki

During this class you will receive the Third Degree symbol which enables you to begin offering attunements and the various levels of reiki. You also learn how to use the symbol in self-treatment and with others, how to perform self-attunements, and how to perform attunements (empowerments) with others. We will also discuss how to teach a small class, and you will receive supervision, at your initiation, for the first year.

You will be expected to coordinate your own class within six months, develop class outlines, teach and pass attunements. Your first class in each degree may be supervised by the instructor if mutually agreed upon. Other aspects of establishing your own practice will be discussed such as permission to treat authorization forms, brochures, certificates, and insurance.

This is generally a one-year teacher-student relationship which will focus on you becoming the best reiki teacher you can be by enhancing your own individual teaching style.  Not all students are accepted into this level of training.

PLEASE NOTE:

Reiki is not a substitute for medical treatment, but rather a complementary treatment that can be used along with proper medical diagnoses and treatment. Reiki is non-invasive, it is very safe and gentle and produces a feeling of relaxation within minutes of a session. Reiki is often used to reduce stress and tensions of every day life. Doing self-treatments on a daily basis helps you reduce stress and negativity. You can give yourself a mini treatment while sitting in a chair at work when you feel stressed during the day.

Increasingly reiki and similar energy-based healing techniques are being used in conjunction with traditional medical practices in hospitals and operating rooms.
