PBY Catalina

The war was on.  Lambert was immediately ordered as Executive Officer of an Anti-Sub squadron of flying boats operating out of Naval Air Station New York at Floyd Bennet Field.

The average flight time between actual sightings of enemy subs was an astonishing 1,800 hours.  Missions were routinely flown just 50 ft. above the sea, so the majority of aircraft losses were from unintended "water strikes".

PBM Martin Mariner

Lambert flew a variety of anti-submarine aircraft.  But the lumbering Flying Boats made him hungry to fly something more agile.

The Martin PBM Mariner was more advanced and larger than the Catalina
