Now that the Festival is safely behind me, I think I can spare a moment or two to write about other
stuff. *Yawn*.
Assuming anybody looks at this shite, they might have noticed that I'm persistently putzing
with the look of this site. Any comments will be gracefully ignored.
For starters, I think that I shall take down the poster in my back windshield now. I think I've pissed
off enough people and I'm beginning to fear for my safety. One never knows what others are gonna do, and I'm not in the frame
of mind to wanna find out.
NEWS STORIES I'M FOLLOWING (courtesy of the BBC):
---A leaked internal memo by US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld says the US faces what is described as a "long,
hard slog" in Iraq and Afghanistan.
---Halliburton, the oil services and construction group, has been accused by US lawmakers of charging "inflated
prices" when they sell petrol to US troops in Iraq.
NEWS STORIES I'M NOT FOLLOWING (Thanks to CNN):
---What World Series?
---Kobe who?
---Liza's getting divorced again??
Just recently read that Vladimir Putin of Russia is thinking seriously of switching to the Euro in
trading its oil. It would very interesting, to say the least, to see what would happen if every OPEC country decided
to do the same thing. Methinks the US of A would have a very tough time for a very long time. Debs and I were even fantasizing
about having to "downsize" our living arrangements should the bottom drop out. Europe--or perhaps New Zealand---is looking
better and better as an option!
Speaking of which...Debs and I are looking fwd happily to our trip to Germany in December for Xmas,
to see my sister Janet and her family. At one point we will be in the Austrian Alps, a mere day's drive from Salzburg, Vienna,
Venice, and Zagreb. Wherever shall we go to first!
But until then, I have to contend with school. Things are going relatively well, got my 1st paper
back in my Science class and reeled in a nice A-. Still waiting for results in my LBS class. Not too worried, however, as
the material and the ideas therein where pretty well set in my brain...Only thing I'm running behind on are observations at
local schools for my Math and Music classes... Get to register for Winter classes soon, and haven't yet sat down with the
schedule to figure out what I'm gonna take.
There ya go.....All the news what fits. More later.
Time, she do fly when one is driving one's self batty.
The Festival went off just fine, with hitches kept down to a minimum. Lots of good will all around--I sure couldn't imagine
doing it without the cadre of bitchin' individuals what were there throughout. Looking forward to the debriefing, sometime
next week, I expect.
Tonight was "election" night--actually "recall election" night...and (Gawd, it pains me to say this) Arnold
Schwarzneggar is the new Governor of California. I can't even spell the guy's name! Shwartzeneggar? Schwarzenegger?
How about Arnold "You Must Be F'kk'n Kidding Me"?
For the first time, I'm ashamed to call myself a fourth generation Californian.
I was pretty damned certain that Gray Davis would resign at the 11th hour--presumably pulling the rug out from under the recall--but
I was told that that would not have been a legal manuever and the recall would have to go through anyway. Damn! Though I had
my fanger on the pulse o'something that had none.
School has kicked in with a vengeance. I have an Ancient and Modern Science class, taught by a very round but very brilliant
little gnome-like guy with a fine British accent, a class on teaching Mathematics whose workload may send me over the edge,
and yet another class with probably my fave teacher of my college career, Patrick Sharp. This one is on race, identity and
popular culture in America. Very cool.
