THY KINGDOM COME

By: Lisa    Rated PG and PG-13

It was a terrible storm that hit that afternoon along the beach. The weather forecasters hadn't predicted it; it simply seemed to form out of nowhere and lashed the beach with a fury that hadn't been seen in years. Dark clouds, rain and lightning drenched the area, then just as quickly as it had come, it dissipated, leaving those who lived in the houses along the beach shaking their heads in disbelief. Little did anybody know that something other than rain also fell to Earth during that terrible storm.....
It was a long time before anybody came out onto the beach that evening; it was already growing dark, so most people decided to stay indoors. Four young men in their twenties, Mike, Micky, Peter and Davy, bored with staying in their beach house, decided to go for a walk. Maybe something of value had washed up on shore and they could sell it. They were a rock quartet who called themselves the Monkees. Times were usually pretty tough for them; with so many rock groups out there, it was hard to get many gigs. Still, they had the optimism of youth, plus their deep friendship for each other to see them through.
As the sun set over the ocean, the four slowly walked down the beach, over logs, seaweed and other flotsam and jetsam. But they didn't see anything that looked valuable.
"Man that was some storm." Davy said, picking up a piece of log and throwing it back into the ocean.
"True, I never saw Peter crawl under the bed so fast!" Micky laughed.
"Well, it was a bad storm." Peter said quietly, "It seemed so angry, so mean."
"It was just a storm, Pete." Mike replied, "Y'know, all that stuff about warm and cold air coming together and falling air pressure is what made that happen."
"I suppose..." Peter trailed off. Through the growing darkness, he spotted something a short distance away. "What is that?" He pointed to something on the beach.
"Let's go see." Davy replied.
The four Monkees walked over to what looked like a log from a distance, but as they grew closer, they realized it was a human figure, a young woman, covered in sand, grime and seaweed.
"It's a woman!" Micky exclaimed as the four raced over to her. She was laying on her stomach, barefoot, her white dress dirty and torn. Micky gently rolled her over on to her back.
Mike took her wrist and felt for a pulse. After several seconds he found it, weak, but steady.
"She's alive." Mike said with relief, as he pulled some of the seaweed off of her short blond hair.
"How'd she get here?" Peter asked.
"Either she was caught out when the storm started, or she might've fallen overboard from her boat." Davy replied.
"Let's take her back to the pad and get her cleaned up." Mike said. Micky gently picked the girl up and the Monkees quickly made their way back to their beach house.

Once back at the pad, Micky laid the girl on the chaise lounge, while the other three got soap, water and some wash cloths. Then, slowly, gently, the Monkees began to wash the grime and dirt from the girl's body. As they cleaned her up, the guys were glad to see she didn't have many cuts or scrapes on her. They washed cleaned her up as much as modesty would allow and dried her off. Finally, Peter washed the girl's hair and combed it out. Mike took the girl's wrist and felt her pulse. It was stronger than before. Mike smiled and told the others. Davy brought over a blanket and covered her with it. The four then stared down at her.
"She sure is pretty." Peter said softly.
"Pretty?" Davy said, getting stars in his eyes, "She's beautiful."
"Take it easy, Davy." Mike admonished, "We don't know anything about her. She could be married."
Davy nodded his head as Micky bent down to fix the blanket. He smiled at the girl, then impulsively gave her a quick kiss on the lips.
"Micky!" The others said.
Micky smiled sheepishly. "Just trying to see if 'sleeping beauty' can work in reverse."
Suddenly, the girl moved around and slowly opened her eyes. She looked up at the four men around her and seemed afraid for an instant, then slightly smiled. The four Monkees knelt down by her.
"Hello, miss." Mike said quietly. "Don't be afraid. We won't hurt you. We found you on the beach and brought you here to our house."
The girl looked at the four men. They were certainly handsome! One was tall with dark hair hanging over his forehead and wearing a green wool hat, another had brown hair in a Beatle haircut, and the third had lighter brown hair while the fourth had a mop of brown curly hair. She knew right away these were good men and she had nothing to fear. She slowly sat up and put her feet on the floor.
"Thank you for rescuing me." She said softly. "My name is Elizabeth. What are your names?"
Mike, Davy, Peter and Micky quickly told her their names.
"Would you like a glass of water?" Mike asked.
Elizabeth nodded, and Mike got up to get the water.
"So you four found me on the beach?" Elizabeth asked.
"Yeah, you didn't look too good." Micky replied, "How did you get there?"
"I'd....rather not talk about that right now." Elizabeth replied as she took the drink from Mike's hand. "I'm grateful to all of you for your kindness. You'll be rewarded for what you've done."
"Oh, it was nothing." Peter replied modestly.
Elizabeth smiled at Peter. Yes, this was a good, kindhearted man. She pulled the blanket away from her, then quickly pulled it back around her when she noticed how torn her dress was.
"We're about the same size, Elizabeth." Peter said quickly, "I'll let you borrow some of my clothes."
"Thank you Peter." Elizabeth replied. Peter got up and went into the bedroom he shared with Davy. Elizabeth looked around the pad. "This is a nice place you have here, guys." She said, then spied a sign that said, "Money is the root of all evil." Elizabeth shook her head as she read the sign aloud.
"Yeah, if that's the case." Mike said, "Then there's no evil in this place."
"Actually, it's the 'love' of money that's the root of all evil. Money itself is just pieces of paper or metal. It's what people do to get money that's evil."
Micky, Mike and Davy looked at each other. They had never thought of it that way. Peter came back with a pair of pants and a shirt.
"Here you go, Elizabeth." Peter said, "Try these on."
Elizabeth took the clothes from Peter, while the Monkees quickly went into Peter and Davy's bedroom to give her some privacy. They immediately went into a huddle.
"What do you think of her, guys?" Mike asked in a whisper.
"She's a bit on the formal side," Davy replied, "But I think she's alright."
Peter and Micky nodded in agreement. In the living room, Elizabeth changed into the clothes Peter gave her and then called the out to say she was changed. The Monkees came out and were stunned at how even more beautiful Elizabeth looked now. She smiled at the guys.
"What's the matter?" She asked.
"Noth...nothing, Elizabeth." Micky stammered.
"Would you like something to eat?" Mike asked.
"Yes, I would, thank you." Elizabeth replied.
So while Elizabeth and the others talked, Mike made their last box of the macaroni and cheese. He called her over to the kitchen when it was ready. Elizabeth came over and sat down and began to eat. The others joined her at the table. She noticed the hungry looks of the others.
"Aren't you boys going to have any?" She asked.
"Ah, no, Elizabeth." Peter said quickly, "We're not hungry."
The truth was, that Elizabeth was eating the last food in the house. The Monkees hadn't had a gig in a while and food was a luxury right now.
Elizabeth looked into Peter's eyes and gently laid a hand on his arm. "Go into the pantry. I'm sure you'll find something for you and your friends."
Peter looked into Elizabeth's pale blue eyes for a moment. Then, without a word, he walked over to the pantry and opened one of the cupboard doors.
The cupboard was jammed full of bread, cereal, crackers and canned goods! Peter let out a gasp. The other three joined him and stared open-mouthed at all the food. Stunned, Mike opened the refrigerator....and found it stuffed with Milk, orange juice, eggs, vegetables and soda. The freezer was also full of meat, chicken and fish. There was enough to feed the four of them for at least a month!
"How did all this get here?" Davy said slowly.
The four of them turned to Elizabeth, who was still eating her mac and cheese. But before they could ask her anything, the doorbell rang. Micky answered it and in stormed their landlord, Mr. Babbitt.
"Where's the rent?" He demanded, "You boys are two months behind as it is!"
"Mr. Babbitt, we have a guest here." Mike replied, indicating Elizabeth.
"I'm sorry, young lady," Babbitt said, "But your friends are late with the rent."
"That's ok, Mr. Babbitt." Elizabeth replied, digging into the pocket of Peter's shirt. "Here you go." She said, walking over to him and pulling a wad of bills out of Peter's shirt pocket. "Here's the back rent and this month's payment." She handed the money over to the stunned landlord. Babbit counted it out. It was the exact amount he needed. He quickly wrote out a receipt and handed it to an equally stunned Mike.
"I'll see you boys next month." Babbitt smiled and quickly exited the pad.
The four Monkees looked at Elizabeth with a mixture of awe and fear. First all that food and now somehow she got all that money from Peter's shirt. What was going on?
"Who....are you?" Peter asked, a little frightened.
"My name is Elizabeth." She answered, "Elizabeth Boniface."
"What...are you?" Mike asked slowly.
Elizabeth gave each of the Monkees a warm smile that put them at their ease before she answered.
"I am an angel."

In another part of town, deep in the basement of The University of Los Angeles' Time and Energy lab (ULATE), the lights were burning bright as they had been for several months now. In the middle of the lab, a short, middle-aged man with graying hair and a short beard worked feverishly on a large, metal tube about six foot tall and four foot wide. The tube was connected to a large bank of computers via a thick cable.
Finally, the last bolt was tightened and he quickly climbed down to the ground.
"Ah, at last." He breathed. "It’s finally ready."
"It's about time." A voice boomed behind him.
The man jumped a foot in the air and spun around. No matter how many times he heard that voice, he still was frightened by it. He could also never hear when the figure behind that voice came into his lab. The man looked at the figure lurking in the shadows. Even though the mysterious figure was some distance away, the man heard him as if the figure was right beside him.
"I...I wish you wouldn't do that." The man said.
"Oh, I'm sorry, Dr. Chronos." The figure said, not sounding sorry at all.
Dr. Chronos let it go. After all, the figure had financed his whole operation while others simply laughed at the whole idea of time travel. The figure in the shadows continued.
"When will you be ready? I had to take care of a slight problem a short while ago. Someone has been trying to interfere with your work." The figure said.
Dr. Chronos decided not to ask how the figure took care of the problem. "I've told my assistants to dress themselves properly for the time we're going to. As soon as they arrive, we'll be ready to leave."
"Excellent." The figure replied with a slight laugh. "You have everything thought out?"
"Oh, yes." Chronos said smiling, "We've all taken language courses and studied the customs of the times. All the gear we need has already been placed in the time capsule and I've set the co-ordinates for the correct time and place."
"Very good, Dr. Chronos." The figure replied, "I hope it works out well for you."
"Thank you, sir." Dr. Chronos replied with an evil smile. "I'm finally going to have revenge-big time revenge-on those who have hurt me so much!"
"And revenge for me as well." The figure answered, "If you do this right, I'll make you in charge of time. You will be able to control it to your whims."
"Yes, I will." Dr. Chronos said slowly. "There are so many things, so many wrongs in world history that I want to correct."
Just as he said this, the door to his lab opened and Dr. Chronos' four assistants came into the lab. They were dressed in long brown tunics and sandals, and had short beards on their faces. They seemed eager to go.
"What took you four so long?" Dr. Chronos demanded. "Never mind, never mind." He continued before any of them could answer. "Get into the capsule."
"Yes, Dr. Chronos." One of his assistants, named Larry, answered.
Dr. Chronos turned back to the figure he was talking to, but the figure was gone. Shaking his head, Dr. Chronos walked over to a locker and changed out of his twentieth-century suit and into a brown tunic like his assistants. Then, making sure he had no visible signs of the twentieth century on him, he walked into the capsule and shut the door. It sealed up by itself. Dr. Chronos settled down in front of the computer while his assistants stood around him.
"Ready to change history, gentlemen?" He asked smugly.
"Ready, Dr. Chronos!" The four men answered.
Dr. Chronos pushed several buttons and threw a switch. Inside, nothing seemed to happen, but to the mysterious figure watching from the outside, the capsule seemed to blur, then disappear.
Mr. Zero stepped over to where the capsule once was, threw his head back and laughed.

"You're an...an...angel?" Davy gasped, gripping the edge of the kitchen chair.
"I am." Elizabeth replied, smiling at him.
Mike just shook his head. "I'm sorry, Elizabeth, but I can't believe you're an angel. I mean, where's your wings?"
Instead of getting angry, Elizabeth's smile grew even brighter.
"You are just like your ancestor Thomas, who wouldn't believe our Lord has risen from the dead unless he had seen the nail wounds and put his hand into the Lord's side."
Elizabeth looked down and suddenly she began to glow. Within a few seconds, Peter's clothes had disappeared from her and were replaced with a shining white robe. She looked up and smiled at Mike while her wings appeared and slowly unfolded before them all. The glow slowly faded from her.
The four Monkees stood dumbfounded at the sight. Peter fainted and began to fall, but Elizabeth stretched out her hand and he gently lay down on the floor. Micky, Mike and Davy fell to their knees, but Elizabeth gently took their arms and pulled them up.
"Do not pay me any homage." She said sternly, "Only God alone is worthy of praise." She walked over to where Peter was in a faint. She touched his cheek and he woke up. Elizabeth helped him stand up.
Mike found his voice. "I'm sorry I doubted you, Elizabeth." He said, "I just needed to see things with my own eyes."
"That's ok, Mike." Elizabeth replied, "And yes, you are a descendent of Saint Thomas, or 'doubting Thomas' as he is sometimes known."
Elizabeth put her hands together and instantly, she was back to wearing the white dress she had been found in, now all clean and patched up.
"Your clothes are back in your dresser, Peter." Elizabeth smiled. "Let's sit down, I know you four have lots of questions for me."
The five of them settled in the living room, sitting on various chairs and the sofa. Elizabeth put her hands on her lap and began to explain.
"I know the biggest question you four have right now, is how I, being an angel with great powers, ended up unconscious on the beach."
The Monkees all nodded their heads.
"Well, the truth is that I was in a fight. Some of Satan's minions came after me and tried to kill me. The storm you had not too long ago was me fighting off the demons."
"And you lost?" Micky ventured.
"No, I won." Elizabeth laughed, "You thought I looked bad, you should've seen the others."
Everybody laughed at that. Elizabeth continued.
"The fight drained me, though, and I literally fell to Earth. I just had enough power to change back into human form before I lost consciousness."
"Why would they try to kill you?" Peter asked, shocked that someone would try to hurt someone as beautiful as Elizabeth.
"While in human form, I had been investigating some suspicious activities at the University of Los Angeles' Time and Energy lab. I found out there is a Dr. Chronos who is doing experiments in time travel."
"Time travel?" Davy repeated. "I thought that was science fiction."
"It seems Dr. Chronos had been financed for years by a mysterious figure who wants him to travel back in time." Elizabeth answered. "If you travel back and change just the smallest thing, it can have drastic results years later."
"Sort of like if you go back and kill your grandparents accidentally, you'd never be born." Micky replied.
"That's exactly right, Micky." Elizabeth said.
"So why are you interested in this?" Mike asked.
Elizabeth sighed. This was going to be the hard part. "Because I have reason to believe Dr. Chronos is going to go back in time and do something that will drastically affect the entire world for centuries to come. Something so terrible it will change history as we know it-for the worse."
In the long silence that followed, Peter finally asked the question. "What will Dr. Chronos do?"
"He wants to go back in time and prevent our Lord Jesus from dying on the cross." Elizabeth said very softly.
"That's crazy!" Mike exploded, then covered his mouth when he realized who he had said that to.
Elizabeth looked at Mike and shook her head. "No, Michael, it isn't. Humanity has always been trying to do what it wants instead of putting their trust in God. That's why things are so bad today."
"But to stop Jesus..." Davy said slowly, then stopped. He couldn't finish the sentence.
"The world would be in even worse shape than it is today." Elizabeth replied. "People would still be worshipping idols, there would be no hope. The gates of Heaven would still be closed. Satan would have a much easier time in taking souls."
"But God wouldn't let anybody stop his son from saving mankind." Peter said.
"Our Lord could've come down off the cross at any time, too." Elizabeth said, "But he stayed and died for us. He let things take their course. It's probable that our Lord would stop anyone from interfering, but like I said before, even the slightest change from what is supposed to happen can have drastic results for years to come."
A heavy silence followed that statement. The world would be a much different place if the Christian religion was not allowed to be started. True, all the wars and persecutions over one form of Christianity or another wouldn't take place, but history would be changed; the mighty Roman empire wouldn't become Christian. Suddenly, the silence was broken by Peter's rumbling stomach. He gave an embarrassed smile to the others. Elizabeth smiled and looked at the Monkees.
"Why don't you boys eat some of that food you have now? I'm going to check up on a few things. I'll be back soon." With that, she simply disappeared.
The Monkees jumped in fright then looked at each other. Micky looked at the others.
"Are you sure one of us isn't dreaming?" He asked.
Davy got up and opened the cupboard. It was still stuffed with food. "If it’s a dream, let’s eat before we wake up!"
The other three joined him and grabbed things to eat. Soon, the sound of four very hungry men eating was the only sound to be heard.

Elizabeth simply appeared outside Dr. Chronos' lab. She had considered using her human form, but since the demon attack, she realized things might be coming to fruition. Looking to see if anybody was around, she put her hand on the keypad next to the lab door. An instant later, the door opened for her. Elizabeth walked in, determined to confront Dr. Chronos and his men.
To her surprise and shock, the lab was almost empty, just a few tables and chairs in the room. A computer stood against the wall with a long thick bundle of wires leading from it. Elizabeth picked it the bundle of wires and frowned. The last time she saw the lab, there was a metal capsule attached to these wires. She dropped the wires and hung her head. She was too late! Chronos and his men were probably back in time by now! The fight with the demons had delayed her enough to stop Chronos from leaving, and now it was too late! Unless.....she went back in time herself. But she was going to need help, and she knew who to ask...
In the blink of an eye, Elizabeth left the lab and went back to the Monkees' pad.

The Monkees had just finished stuffing themselves on soup and sandwiches. They hadn't really had a decent meal in weeks and the food tasted so good! Peter had begun to clean the table when Elizabeth appeared in front of them.
"Yahhh!" The Monkees yelled in fright. Peter nearly dropped a dish.
"I'm sorry, boys." Elizabeth said, "I'll try not to appear right in front of you like that."
"That's ok, Elizabeth." Mike said. "Did you check up on your stuff?"
Elizabeth nodded. "I did, Mike, and I found out that things are worse than I thought."
"What happened?" Micky asked, concerned.
"Dr. Chronos and his time capsule are gone from his lab." Elizabeth said quietly, "He's already gone back in time."
"That's supposed to be bad, right?" Peter asked.
"Its very bad, Peter." Elizabeth replied, "It means that at any time now history might be changed."
"Can't you do something?" Mike asked.
Elizabeth nodded her head again. "Yes, I can go back in time and try to stop him."
"Well, go ahead!" Mike exclaimed, "I don't mean to be rude, but you'd better get going!"
"I can't do this alone." Elizabeth replied, "I'll need help from the four of you."
"US?!" The Monkees exclaimed at once.
"Why us?" Peter said, "We're not special."
"Yeah, we're just four long-haired weirdoes." Micky put in with a smirk on his face.
But Elizabeth just shook her head. "No, boys, the four of you are special. I can read your hearts and you are not like the other men your age. Despite the hardships you've endured, the four of you have forged a deep bond between yourselves. You four don't drink, or take drugs or associate with those that do. You're good, law-abiding citizens who would never hurt another person."
The Monkees just looked at each other, a little embarrassed. The angel continued. "While I laid helpless on the beach, the four of you could've hurt me or taken advantage of me, but you didn't. You brought me back and took care of me, washed me off and gave me something to wear. Then on top of all that, you boys offered me the last of your food. I was injured and you washed my wounds, naked and you clothed me, I was hungry and you gave me to eat." She finished, quoting scripture.
"But.....but...." Micky tried to say, but couldn't get the words out.
"But we're not what you'd call church going Christians." Mike said, finishing what he figured Micky was trying to say. "We believe in God, but none of us belong to a church or anything like that."
"I know, Michael." Elizabeth said, putting her hand on his arm, "There is hurt inside all of you. But there also is courage and strength of will as well. Think of all the adventures you four have had. You've fought everything from Pirates to vampires...and lived."
Micky got up from the table and went outside to stand on the patio. Peter went to sit on the couch, while Mike and Davy still sat at the kitchen table.
"I lost me Mum when I was fourteen." Davy said quietly, "I thought the world of her. I was very angry at God for taking her so suddenly."
"My dad abandoned my Mom and I when I was two.'' Mike put in, "I wondered why God couldn't give me a Mom and Dad like my friends had."
Elizabeth put her hands on Mike and Davy's shoulders. "I can't answer why The Lord let those things happen." She said softly, "Only God knows his own mind. But despite what has happened in your lives you become stronger every day. Will you help me?"
Mike and Davy looked at each other, then up at Elizabeth.
"We'll do our best to help you, Elizabeth." Mike answered, pointing at Davy and himself, "But I don't know what Micky and Peter think."
"I'll help you Elizabeth." Peter said as he walked back over to the kitchen table, "My parents were always fighting and there never seemed to be any peace in my family. Going to Church was never at the top of our list, but I don't want to see things worse than they are now."
"Thank you Peter." Elizabeth smiled. "I'll talk to Micky." She walked out to the patio and stood next to Micky. The moon was just beginning to rise. They stood there for awhile without speaking, then Micky turned to Elizabeth. He gasped at how beautiful she looked in the moonlight. Micky fought the urge to take Elizabeth in his arms and kiss her.
"What do the others say?" He asked.
"They've agreed to help." Elizabeth said, looking in Micky's eyes, "But what do you want to do?"
Micky turned back to the railing. "I don't know." He replied, shaking his head. "God took my Dad away from me when I was seventeen, the best Dad in the world, and now I'm being asked to help God out? Where was God when my Dad died of a heart attack?" Micky bit his lip to stifle a cry.
Elizabeth took Micky's hand. "Remember the story of the footprints in the sand?" She asked. Micky looked at her and shook his head.

"A man looked back on his life and saw two sets of footprints in the sand, one belonging to him and the other one to the Lord. But the man noticed that during the sad times in his life there was only one set. The man asked why the Lord had abandoned him during the sad times of his life. The Lord answered 'Where you see only one set of footprints, it was then that I carried you.'
Micky smiled slightly when Elizabeth finished, a small tear coming down his cheek. She brushed it away. "Will you help me Micky?"
The drummer nodded his head. "I'll help you Elizabeth." Micky said, "Someone has to watch out for the others."
Elizabeth giggled and the two of them went back into the pad where the other three were waiting.
"Well?" Mike asked anxiously.
"Well, what are we waiting for?" Micky replied.
"Whoa, not so fast!" Elizabeth exclaimed, "We have to get ready first." She pointed to the bedrooms. "First of all you boys will have to lose the modern clothing. In your bedrooms, you'll find clothes and sandals that will help you blend in with the other people of that time."
The Monkees went off to their bedrooms. Peter and Davy went to their downstairs bedroom, while Micky and Mike went to their upstairs room. Elizabeth called out.
"Make sure you take off everything that wouldn't exist over nineteen hundred years ago! That includes watches, rings and any other jewelry!"
"Can we keep our underwear on?" Micky called back.
Elizabeth rolled her eyes. "Yes, Micky. It won't be seen under your clothes."
A few minutes later, the Monkees came out of their bedrooms wearing ankle-length gray tunics with a rope belt and brown cloaks. They had leather sandals on their feet. While they were changing, Elizabeth had changed from her white dress to a light brown tunic, gray cloak and a gray headscarf.
"Can't say much for the tailoring or the colors." Mike remarked.
"Only the wealthy could afford to have dyed clothes back then Mike." Elizabeth explained. "Regular people had to do with rough cloth. Anyway, the last thing we want to do is attract attention to ourselves."
She walked over to Mike and pulled his wool cap off his head. Mike smiled sheepishly. Elizabeth then went over to each of the Monkees and touched their lips and ears.
"What was that for?" Micky asked.
"Now the four of you will be able to speak and understand the Hebrew language. Plus I've given you four descriptions of what Dr. Chronos and his men look like." The angel explained. "I've also placed in your minds the gospel's accounts of our Lord's passion. That way you four will be able to figure out way Chronos and his men might try to alter things.
"What about writing?" Davy asked.
"It doesn't matter." Elizabeth explained, "If you're asked, just say you can't read or write. Most people back then were illiterate."
"Are we ready to go now?" Peter asked.
"I believe so." Elizabeth said, "But let me explain something. Traveling back through nineteen centuries of time will exhaust me. I'm going to need your strength to get us there. Once there, I'll be able to guide you, but you four will have to do the work until I get my strength back. Is that clear?"
"Its clear, Elizabeth." Micky replied, "Just tell us what needs to be done, and we'll do it."
The angel smiled. "All right then, form a circle and join hands with me."
The Monkees and Elizabeth did that. The angel spoke again, "Now, everybody concentrate on being in a garden in Jerusalem at night. Picture yourselves there....."
The four Monkees felt themselves join with Elizabeth. Everything grew very quiet and still.....
Suddenly, the five of them were no longer in the pad, there was darkness all around, they seemed to be floating, but nobody was afraid.....
In a rush, the Monkees and Elizabeth found themselves standing in a grove of trees in a garden at night. They were at the top of a slight hill, so they could see the rest of the garden. The five of them let go of each other's hands, but Elizabeth began to collapse to the ground. Micky quickly caught her and gently picked her up and carried her over to a tree. He sat her down and leaned her back against the tree.
"Are you ok, Elizabeth?" Micky asked, concerned.
"I'm physically fine, Micky, but very tired." She replied in a whisper. "Luckily I had you four to support me in our journey."
"Are we really back in time?" Peter asked.
"Yes, in what would later be known as 33 a.d, give or take a year." Elizabeth replied with a slight smile. "We're in the garden of Gethsemane on what would be later known in the Christian church as Holy Thursday."
She looked down the hill and the Monkees followed her gaze. From their vantage point, they saw someone with a torch lead a group of about a dozen people into the garden. Four of the people then broke off from the group while the others sat down to rest. The four people went off a short distance, then a single solitary man left the other three behind and knelt down by a large rock.
Mike remembered what the gospels said and turned to Elizabeth.
"Is that Jesus?" Mike whispered, pointing to the kneeling man.
Elizabeth could only nod her head.
"Let's go warn him!" Peter said.
"No, Peter." Elizabeth said, "Don't you think he already knows? You four need to search the garden and look for Dr. Chronos and his men, and see if they are planning anything. This would be a good time for him to try and change things."
"Ok then," Mike said, "Peter and I will go in this direction, while Micky and Davy search over there."
"What about Elizabeth?" Micky asked.
"I'll be fine, Micky." She replied, "Go now, it won't be long before the soldiers come to arrest our lord." The angel drifted off to sleep.
So Mike and Peter went one way, while Micky and Davy went another. Slowly, so as not to make any noise, the four of them searched the area for any sign of Dr. Chronos or his men. At the edge of the garden, Micky and Davy heard low voices-speaking English! They very slowly made their way over to a hedge and peeked through it.
On the other side of the hedge, Micky and Davy saw Dr. Chronos and his men, dressed like they were, set up what looked like fireworks. There were several small tubes being set up to shoot the fireworks into the sky. Micky and Davy looked at each other, puzzled as to what Chronos would accomplish by setting off fireworks.

Dr. Chronos watched with satisfaction as the fireworks were carefully placed into the launching tubes. He and his men had actually arrived in this time a few days earlier and had set up a base in a cave in the nearby Kindron Valley. They had arrived at the garden as dusk fell so they could be ready when the soldiers came to arrest Jesus.
"Almost ready, gentlemen?" Dr. Chronos asked evilly.
"Just a few more wires to connect Dr. Chronos and all will be ready." Replied one of his men.
"Good, good!" Chronos said happily. "When those soldiers see all the fireworks going off in the sky, they'll think Jesus is doing it! They'll think he's a sorcerer and run off! HAHA!"
The other men laughed too. One of the men spoke up.
"If Jesus isn't arrested, then he can't die on the cross!"
"And the Christian religion will not be founded!" Dr. Chronos finished gleefully.

Micky and Davy looked at each other in horror. Then without a word, they raced back to tell the others. They arrived back at the tree where Elizabeth was sleeping just as Mike and Peter were returning. While Micky quickly explained what Chronos was planning, a large group of soldiers led by a single man entered the garden. The men who had been sleeping quickly got up to confront the soldiers. A ruckus was breaking out down below them.
"We have to get back to Chronos right now!" Micky shouted.
The Monkees quickly ran to the hedge where Chronos and his men were hiding. They were watching the scene below them play out. One of the men had his hand on the fire button. The four Monkees looked at each other. There was no time for a fancy plan right now, so Mike simply pointed through the hedge. The other three nodded.
Taking a deep breath, the Monkees gave a yell and charged through the hedge and into the clearing where Chronos and his men were. Without stopping, Micky kicked over the tubes holding the fireworks, while Davy pulled out the wires from the detonator. Mike and Peter simply crashed into the very surprised men and knocked them down. The surprise was total and complete. Within seconds, the gear was smashed to pieces and Chronos and his men were lying on the ground covered in mud.
Satisfied everything was in shambles, Mike yelled to the other Monkees, in English, "Split up and meet back at the tree!"
The four Monkees ran off in four different directions, leaving the five mud-covered men cursing and swearing at them.

Meanwhile, below them another scene played out, just as it was supposed to.
Judas, one of the Jesus' twelve disciples, came over and said, "Hail, Rabbi." and kissed Jesus.
"Judas," Jesus replied, "Do you betray the son of man with a kiss?" He turned to the soldiers. "Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs to seize me? Day after Day I sat teaching in the temple area, yet you did not arrest me. But all this has come to pass that the writing of the prophets may be fulfilled."
At that, Jesus' disciples ran off in several directions. The soldiers arrested Jesus, bound him and led him away.

The Monkees arrived back at the tree where Elizabeth sat to find her awake and watching the scene play out below her. Even in the dark, they could see the great sadness in her eyes.
"Elizabeth," Mike said softly, "We..."
"I know what you boys did, Mike." Elizabeth said sadly, her eyes not leaving the scene below. "You boys did well."
"Well, that's it, right?" Peter asked. "Jesus has been arrested and will be crucified tomorrow, so we're done...right?"
Elizabeth shook her head. "No Peter, its not done. There are several more opportunities for Dr. Chronos and his men to try and free Jesus from captivity. We have to stay in this time until the end."
"Until Jesus dies?" Davy asked.
Elizabeth simply nodded.

In another part of the garden, five very angry men were trying to clean up after the unexpected attack from the Monkees. Dr. Chronos swore a blue streak as he paced back and forth watching the others gather up the smashed gear.
"Who were those men?" He demanded, "How did they know what we were going to do?"
"They must be from our own time, Dr. Chronos." One of his men named Mark replied. "One of them spoke English."
"True." Dr. Chronos replied, coming to a stop. "It must be an enemy of our benefactor that sent them back to stop us. But they won't succeed! I won't let them succeed!" He yelled. "Mark and Larry, you two take the gear back to our base. Henry and Ian, you two will come with me to Caiaphas' house. Larry and Mark, you two will meet us there. Meanwhile the three of us will put plan B into action."
Larry and Mark did what they were told and Dr. Chronos and the other two left their hiding place and followed the group of soldiers taking Jesus away.

From their own vantage spot, the Monkees and Elizabeth watched as Simon Peter and another disciple follow the soldiers from a far distance. Then they saw Dr. Chronos and two of his men follow as well.
"We must follow them." Elizabeth said quickly. "We have to keep an eye on them."
Without any prompting, Micky picked Elizabeth up and soon the five of them were on their way into Jerusalem.

The Monkees and Elizabeth followed Dr. Chronos and his men as they followed everyone else into Jerusalem. Micky held Elizabeth gently in his arms and once again the angel fell asleep. Mike looked over at Micky.
"You want me to carry her for awhile, Mick?" He asked.
"No, that's ok, Mike." Micky answered quietly. "She hardly weighs anything." He then softly kissed Elizabeth on the head.
Mike looked at Micky for a second longer, then turned away. It was obvious Micky was developing feelings much deeper than friendship with the angel.
It wasn't long, even at that late hour, before word got out that the Jewish authorities had arrested the prophet Jesus. A small crowd began to follow the soldiers as they took Jesus over to the house of the high priest, Caiaphas. The crowd made it harder for the Monkees to see where Dr. Chronos and his men were, but it also helped keep them hidden as well.
The soldiers finally went inside a wooden gate, dragging Jesus along with them. The gate shut and the crowd was left to mill around outside, wondering what was going to happen next. Simon Peter and the other disciple went over to the gate. The other disciple with Simon Peter spoke to the girl watching the gate and she let the two of them inside. After about a minute, Dr. Chronos, Henry and Ian also went over to the girl watching the gate. Dr. Chronos pressed what looked like a bag of coins into the girl's hand. She smiled and let them inside as well.
"Just great!" Mike whispered. "We gotta get in there."
"How?" Micky asked. "Elizabeth's out for the count and we don't have any money."
Davy eyed the young girl at the gate, who was counting the money in the bag Dr. Chronos gave her. He smiled at the others.
"Leave it to me Fellas." Davy said slyly. He started to walk over to her, when Mike took his arm.
"Remember Davy, you can speak Hebrew now."
Davy rolled his eyes. "Yes, papa Nez."
Davy walked over to the girl by the gate. He flashed her his most charming smile and spoke quietly to her. After a few seconds, the girl smiled and nodded her head. Davy leaned over and gave her a kiss on the cheek and motioned for the others to come over. The girl opened the gate for them and let them in. The Monkees thanked her and went inside.
"What did you say to her, Davy?" Peter asked.
"I told her that we were travelers needing a place to rest and could a beautiful girl like her let us inside?" Davy said.
"Davy Jones, ladies man in two languages and eras." Micky said with a small laugh.
The Monkees and Elizabeth found themselves in a large courtyard. There were three charcoal fires burning brightly, trying to stave away the cold night air. Around one fire were several soldiers, talking about how easy it was to arrest Jesus. The other two fires had several civilians around them, including Simon Peter, who kept his cloak drawn around his face, as if afraid someone would recognize him. The other disciple that was with him was quietly talking to some people standing against the wall. However, there were no signs of Dr. Chronos and his two henchmen. The Monkees sat down around the fire opposite where Simon Peter was sitting. Micky leaned Elizabeth against his chest. A man pointed over to her.
"What's wrong with her?" He asked.
"My wife and I and our friends are travelers and she's very tired from our journey." Micky answered in Hebrew.
Mike, Peter and Davy looked at each other at that. 'Wife'? was the unspoken question in their faces, but they said nothing to Micky. The four Monkees leaned close to each other so they could talk privately.
"We need to go into the house and look for Dr. Chronos." Davy said in a whisper.
"Yeah, that's for sure." Mike replied. "Micky, why don't you and Peter sneak inside and look around, while Davy and I keep an eye on things here?" Mike said this to keep Micky focused on the task at hand. He was getting worried that Micky was focusing too much attention on Elizabeth.
"But Mike..." Micky began.
"Don't worry. We'll watch her." Mike put in.
Micky flashed Mike an annoyed look, put gently placed Elizabeth's head on Mike's lap. Then he and Peter silently crept over to a side door of the house. Fortunately, everybody was talking about the night's events that nobody paid attention to them. Micky pushed open the door and he and Peter went inside. They found themselves inside a corridor that led around to the main hall of the house. As they walked closer to the main hall, they began to hear loud, angry shouts.
"I heard this man say 'I will destroy this temple made with hands and within three days I will build another not made with hands!" A voice cried out.
Micky and Peter looked at each other. Obviously, Jesus' trial before the Jewish Priests was going on. Suddenly an angry voice shouted at them:
"Who are you two? What are you doing here?"
Micky and Peter spun around to see a servant glaring at them.
"We...we're the new servants that were hired today." Micky said quickly. Peter nodded in agreement.
"I don't remember Caiaphas hiring any servants recently," the man remarked sharply, "But then again, I'm just the head steward, so why tell me?" He said sarcastically. "Your first job, then, is to go down into the wine cellar and find out what's keeping those other two servants. The priests are calling for wine, and they don't like to be kept waiting."
Micky and Peter looked at each other. The missing servants didn't sound too good....
"What are waiting for?" The steward asked "GO! The wine cellar is down at the end of this hallway."
"Yes sir, right away sir!" Micky and Peter said, and then ran down the hall and opened the wine cellar door.
Moving very quietly, the two Monkees walked down the stone steps. They soon heard noises at the bottom of the steps. Very slowly, they peeked around the corner at the bottom of the steps.....
And saw Dr. Chronos and his two henchmen putting something into the wine jars......

Micky and Peter silently watch as the three men poured small vials of clear liquid into the two wine jars. Henry and Ian had changed from their mud-splattered gear into matching servant's clothes. Just behind them were the unconscious forms of the two servants originally sent to fetch the wine.
Micky looked over at the shelves next to the steps. He saw a few small jars sitting nearby. Slowly, he reached over and picked the jar up and looked inside to see what it contained. He smelled olive oil. Just then, Dr. Chronos spoke to his two henchmen.
"Make sure you serve this to the priests first, then to everybody that you can, even the guards and other servants." Dr. Chronos said. "When everybody is unconscious, we'll sneak Jesus out of the house!"
Henry and Ian nodded and placed the jars on their shoulders. Micky quickly picked up another jar of olive oil and motioned for Peter to follow him back up the stairs.
Henry and Ian, followed by Dr. Chronos, climbed the stairs and started down the hallway towards the main hall. They were about half-way down when suddenly Micky and Peter appeared at the end of the hallway in front of them.
"Hi guys!" Micky said happily while Peter waved. "Remember us?"
"Get them!" Dr. Chronos shouted.
Henry and Ian started to run towards Micky and Peter....then suddenly slipped on the Olive oil the two Monkees had poured on the floor. They went down in a heap, the clay jars of drugged wine shattering on the floor. This of course brought the head steward running. Micky and Peter quickly dodged out of sight.
"What's going on here?" The head steward demanded. "Who are you three?"
"New...new servants." Ian muttered.
"More new servants?" The head steward asked walking towards them, "Well, you three are going to clean up all this...ahhh!" He shouted as he slipped and fell too. Dr. Chronos and his men got up and slowly started to walk away.
"Where do you three think you're going?" The steward demanded as he tried to get up, but Ian kicked the steward back onto the floor.
"Stop! Guards, Guards!" The steward started to yell.
But Dr. Chronos and his men ran away. Micky and Peter decided it was a good idea to make themselves scarce as well and quickly left the area.

While Micky and Peter were busy inside, things began to happen outside too. Mike, Davy and Elizabeth were still by one of the fires opposite where Simon Peter sat. Suddenly, a young servant girl came up to Simon Peter and looked at him intently for a moment. Finally she said "You too were with Jesus of Nazareth."
"Woman, I do not know him." Simon Peter said gruffly.
The servant girl simply shrugged her shoulders and went on her way. A little while later another person came over and said to Simon Peter, "You too are a disciple of Jesus."
Simon Peter managed a wane smile. "My friend, I am not."
More time passed, and this time several people came over to where Simon Peter sat. One of them said to him, "Most assuredly you are one of Jesus' disciples, for you too are a Galilean. Your accent gives you away!"
At that, Peter got up and began to curse and swear at the crowd. The noise woke Elizabeth up and she sorrowfully watched the scene unfurl.
"I tell you I do not know the man!" Simon Peter shouted.
Just then, a rooster began to crow. Simon Peter suddenly remembered what Jesus had told him at supper just a few hours before. 'Before the rooster crows you will have denied me three times.' Also at that time, Jesus was being taken across the courtyard to another part of the house where he would be held until dawn. Jesus looked over at Peter with sad eyes. Simon Peter put his hands to his mouth to stifle a cry, then turned and charged out of the courtyard and into the street. Jesus was taken inside another building and the was door slammed shut.
Elizabeth turned to Mike and Davy. "Follow Simon Peter. Make sure he will be all right. Stay with him."
"But what about you?" Davy asked.
"I'll be fine. Please go!" She begged.
Mike and Davy quickly got up and followed Simon Peter through the winding, narrow streets. Meanwhile, the courtyard was all abuzz with word of the Priests' decision; Jesus was found guilty of blasphemy and sentenced to death! He would be taken to Pontius Pilate, the Roman Governor, in the morning!
Micky and Peter went over to Elizabeth, who was staring vacantly into the fire.
"Elizabeth, where's Mike and Davy?" Micky demanded, angry that Mike and Davy would leave her alone like this.
"Don't be angry Micky." Elizabeth soothed, "I sent them after Simon Peter. He's very upset over denying our Lord three times in a row. I just want to make sure Dr. Chronos doesn't try anything."
Unnoticed by everyone, a very angry Dr. Chronos and his men went through the gate and out onto the street. They stood a way down the wall to wait for the others to come back.
"What do we do now?" Peter asked Elizabeth.
"Nothing will happen until dawn." She replied, "Jesus is locked in a cell beneath the house and heavily guarded. Dr. Chronos and his men can't get to him. So all we can do now is wait."
"Isn't there someplace we could stay?" Micky asked, "It's kinda cold out here."
"All the inns will be filled with visitors for the festival." Elizabeth replied, "But we can try to find a place." Micky and Peter helped her stand up and the three of them walked through the wooden gate, where they were confronted by three upset women. Two of the women were supporting a third who was dressed in black, a sign that she was a widow.
"Please, kind people, tell us." One of the women begged, "What news of Jesus the prophet? Nobody will tell us!"
"I am sorry to say he was condemned by the priests." Elizabeth answered sadly, "They are taking him to Pilate in the morning."
The woman in the middle would've collapsed in grief if the two women on either side of her hadn't supported her arms.
"Thank you young lady." The other lady said, "This woman with us is Mary, the mother of Jesus."
Elizabeth, Micky and Peter bowed to Jesus' mother. "We are honored to meet you, my lady." Elizabeth said softly.
"We're sorry about Jesus." Peter said.
Jesus' mother smiled at the three. "Thank you. You are very kind."
"Are you three here for the festival?" The first lady asked.
"Yes, we're travelers." Micky replied, "My wife and I and my friend have come a long way."
"Do you have a place to stay?' The second lady asked.
"Well..." Peter hedged.
"Then why don't you three stay at my house? At least for the night?" The second lady replied.
"No, we couldn't..." Elizabeth began.
"Nonsense!" The second lady said. "I have a big house! I often take in travelers during the festival times, it would be no problem!"
"Then it would be an honor." Micky said thankfully. "My name is Mick..Michael, and this is my wife Elizabeth and my friend Peter."
"I am Mary of Magdalene, and this other woman is Mary the wife of Cleophas. Come this way, my house isn't too far."
Micky, Elizabeth and Peter followed the other three women back to their house, grateful to be getting out of the cold, but hoping Mike and Davy and Simon Peter were all right.

Mike and Davy followed Simon Peter at a discreet distance as he ran through the streets of Jerusalem. Finally, grief and exhaustion caught up with him and he collapsed onto the stone stairs of a public bath house. Simon Peter wept bitterly over what he had done to Jesus and his sobs could be heard echoing for blocks around. Mike and Davy stayed in the shadows watching Simon Peter as he cried. They felt sorry for him; they could just imagine how they would feel if one of them denied knowing the others.
Suddenly, coming from the opposite direction, were two figures moving toward the weeping disciple. Mike and Davy at first thought they were simply concerned bystanders-until they saw the knives gleaming in the moonlight. Simon Peter had his head in his hands and didn't notice the two men approach.
Too far away to reach Simon Peter in time, Mike and Davy yelled in Hebrew "LOOK OUT!"
Simon Peter looked up in time to see one of the men dive at him. Fortunately, years of working the hazardous job of a fisherman had made Simon Peter quick and strong. Instinctively, he moved out of the way to avoid the knife and grabbed his attacker's arm, then used his strength to throw the man to the ground. The other attacker came at Simon Peter, but the disciple dodged him too and threw the man onto his companion. The two men scrambled to their feet and began to run towards Mike and Davy. The two Monkees sought to block the men, but somehow both attackers had held onto their knives and brandished them in front of Mike and Davy.
"Get out of our way!" One of the men growled in english. The two Monkees recognized both men as Dr. Chronos' lackeys.
"You guys won't get away with this!" Davy said as he and Mike backed away.
"Yes we will," The other man said, "And you and your friends will be sorry you messed with us."
With that, Mark and Larry ran off towards Caiaphas' house. Simon Peter walked over to Mike and Davy, his eyes still wet with tears.
"What strange tongue were they speaking?" He asked, puzzled. Mike and Davy remembered the english language wouldn't evolve for several more centuries yet.
"We don't know." Mike replied in Hebrew, "They must be crazy people."
Simon Peter nodded his head. "Thank you two for the warning. You men saved my life."
"It was nothing." Davy replied. "Are you alright?"
Simon Peter hung his head. "I am so ashamed of myself right now. My name is Simon Peter. I am a disciple of Jesus of Nazareth who was arrested tonight. At dinner this very evening, I told my master that I would go to prison and die for him. He told me that before the rooster crowed I would deny him three times." A sob escaped Simon Peter's lips, "And I did!"
The disciple began to cry again. Mike and Davy put their arms around him, trying to give him some comfort. Finally, Simon Peter wiped his eyes and looked at the two Monkees.
"You men are very kind to me, a complete stranger. How can I thank you?"
"You don't have to thank us." Mike said quietly.
"But I must!" Simon Peter insisted. "I know! Do you two have lodging somewhere?"
"No, not really." Davy replied. "We're travelers."
"Then come back home with me!" The disciple said. "I am staying at a friend's house. She has a lot of room! I know she won't mind taking in a few more people!"
Mike and Davy were about to refuse when they remembered that Elizabeth had told them to stay with Simon Peter. Plus, it was getting colder outside and they were beginning to shiver.
"We'd be glad to." Mike replied.
The two Monkees followed Simon Peter back home.

Micky, Peter and Elizabeth followed the three Marys back to Mary of Magdalene’s house. It was a modest baked brick house surrounded by a fence. They quickly went inside and Mary of Magdalene told the anxious people inside that Jesus had been condemned and would be taken to Pilate in the morning.
Immediately, the house was filled with crying and wailing. Everybody knew what happened to anybody who was handed over for death to the hated Roman occupiers; they were scourged and crucified! Mary the wife of Cleophas took Mary the mother of Jesus into another room. Mary of Magdalene showed Micky, Peter and Elizabeth where they would be staying.
"It seems Jesus has a lot of friends." Peter said sadly.
Mary nodded her head. "Yes, many of the people staying here are his disciples. They told us what happened in the garden tonight and so we came over to Caiaphas' house to see for ourselves; but we couldn’t get in, so we had to wait outside, with no knowledge of what was going on." Mary then smiled at the three, "Until you good people showed up."
Mary then led them over to a small side room with a bed. "I'm sorry it isn't much, but its about all I have left. I'll bring you some extra blankets."
"This will be fine, Mary." Elizabeth said. "Thank you very much.
"If you three are hungry, come back to the front of the house, I have some food sitting out."
"Thank you again, Mary." Micky said, "You're very kind."
Mary smiled and walked away. Elizabeth sat down on the edge of the bed, while Micky and Peter filled her in on what happened in Caiaphas' house. She smiled at the two Monkees, then yawned.
"Why don't you get some sleep. Elizabeth?" Micky asked the angel, "Looks like you still need it."
"How can I sleep while my savior languishes in a dungeon?" Elizabeth said sadly.
Micky gently picked up Elizabeth's legs and placed them on the bed. "How can you help him, how can we help him, if you don't have your strength back?" He replied. "Now lean back and get some rest."
The angel obeyed, and soon she was fast asleep. Peter covered her with a blanket. Mary came back with a few more blankets. She smiled at the sleeping Elizabeth, and was about to say something when they heard loud talking coming from the front of the house. The three of them quickly went to where the noise was. Standing inside the door where Simon Peter, Mike and Davy.
"Simon!" Mary exclaimed and rushed to embrace him, "I'm so glad you're alright!"
"Thank you Mary." Simon Peter replied, "And I owe it to these two travelers. They stopped two crazy men speaking in bizarre tongues from killing me." The disciple's face went somber, "But I wonder if it wouldn't have been better for me if they hadn't done so."
"What do you mean, Simon?" Mary asked, puzzled.
Simon Peter related what happened at supper that night, then about him denying Jesus three times.
"Oh Simon." Mary cried, hugging the disciple tighter, then remembered Mike and Davy. "Oh where are my manners? Please come in, you are more than welcome to stay here!"
"Thank you, kind lady." Mike replied. "My name is Michael and this is David."
"I'm pleased to meet you." Mary said. "I am Mary of Magdalene."
Micky and Peter then bounced over, very happy to see their friends safe. "Hi, guys!" Micky said happily.
"Hi Michael and Peter!" Davy replied, very happy as well. "Is Elizabeth all right?"
"She's sleeping in the back." Peter replied.
"You four know each other?" Mary asked, surprised.
"Yes, the four of us and Elizabeth were traveling together and we became separated looking for lodging for the night." Mike replied.
"Then we can give thanks to Yahweh that he brought the five of you safely together again." Mary smiled.

Mark and Larry raced back to Caiaphas' house and found a very angry oil and wine covered Dr. Chronos, Henry and Ian standing by the wall near the gate.
"What happened?" Larry asked.
"What do you think happened, stupid?" Dr. Chronos barked, "Two of those meddlers stopped us from delivering the drugged wine to the priests!"
"And the other two stopped us from killing Simon Peter." Mark answered.
"WHAT?!" Dr. Chronos shouted. His henchmen thought they could see smoke coming out of his ears. They took a step back from their boss.
After several long seconds, Dr. Chronos had his temper under control again. "We can't do any more tonight. Let's go back to the cave, clean up, and plan our next move. We don't have many opportunities left."
Dr. Chronos' eyes grew very dark and a wicked smile appeared on his face. "And when I get my hands on those interfering fools...they will soon wish they were never born!"

After eating some of the food Mary had provided them, the Monkees went off to the side and filled each other in on what had happened. It seemed they were succeeding in thwarting Dr. Chronos' plans, but there would be a lot of work to do tomorrow. So, they decided to get some sleep and headed back to the small room where Elizabeth still slept. Mary had wanted to give them a bigger room, but the Monkees insisted they would be fine where they were.
They entered the room and found Elizabeth still sleeping. As quietly as they could, they took off their sandals, loosened their belts, and tried to make themselves comfortable on the floor. After a bit of blanket tug-of-war between Davy and Micky, the four Monkees finally managed to go to sleep.

Micky was woken from a light sleep by something brushing past his foot. He opened one eye and saw Elizabeth quietly stepping out of the room. Micky silently drew his blanket aside and got up and followed her. Elizabeth walked up a flight of steps that led to the roof of the house. Micky waited a few seconds, then followed her up. He found her looking over the city and came up beside her. The angel didn't seem surprised to see him.
"I figured you'd follow me." She said with a smile.
Micky looked down. "Yeah, I....I was just concerned, that's all. If you want to be alone...."
"No, please stay." Elizabeth took his hand. As much as she tried to deny it, she found herself attracted to the curly haired drummer. The angel also sensed the same thing from Micky. It wasn't as though she didn't like the other three, but from the time Micky kissed her on the couch, she felt a closeness that she hadn't felt in a very long time.
Micky smiled. "If you insist." He then turned serious. "I know this is a hard time for you. I must admit it's been kinda weird for me too. I mean...we're helping someone be arrested and executed!"
"We're making sure that things are happening to God's plan." Elizabeth replied. "Nothing is happening that hasn't been foretold centuries ago by the prophets."
A chill wind then blew across the roof, and Elizabeth shivered. Micky came and stood behind Elizabeth and put his arms around her to keep her warm. Elizabeth smiled at the warmth and strength of Micky's arms. She gently stroked his arm while Micky kissed the back of her head.
"We'll get through this Elizabeth." Micky said softly. "And then, when we get back to L.A, I want to talk about...us."
Elizabeth hung her head. How could she tell Micky.....
Just then, Mike, Peter and Davy came onto the roof.
"Oh there you two are!" Mike exclaimed. "We were wondering what happened to you two."
"I'm sure you were." Micky said dryly, releasing Elizabeth, annoyed that his friends had spoiled his time with alone with her.
"I couldn't sleep." Elizabeth said, "So I came up here to think and Micky kept me company."
The other three Monkees nodded their heads, accepting that explanation.
"Where do we start at tomorrow?" Davy asked.
"We'll go back to Caiaphas' house and follow wherever they take Jesus." Elizabeth replied, "We must be even more alert than we were tonight in keeping Dr. Chronos and his men from changing anything."
"Don't worry, we'll keep an eye out for trouble." Mike promised.
"Elizabeth," Peter said, "Why can't you just use your angel powers and zap Dr. Chronos and his men?"
The angel smiled sadly. "First of all, Peter, I still don't have my full strength back. I can't even do a card trick right now."
The Monkees chuckled at the joke. Elizabeth continued.
"Secondly, I can only use my powers for defense or to help others, like putting all that food in your pantry."
"I thought angels could do just about anything." Davy remarked.
"Not this angel." Elizabeth replied, "I've only been given the powers I need to fulfill my assignments on Earth."
"You were 'assigned' to Earth?" Micky asked.
"Yes, Micky." Elizabeth said. "Let's sit down, and I'll tell you my story."
The Monkees and Elizabeth sat down on some reed mats that were lying on the roof. The wind had thankfully died down a little so now it wasn't too cold out. The angel took a moment to gather her thoughts and began her story.
"My name really is Elizabeth. I was born in what is called the middle ages in Burgundy in what in the twentieth century would be called France."
"You were once like us?" Peter put in, shocked.
"Yes, Peter." Elizabeth smiled, "I was mortal, flesh and blood, just like you four. But if you knew me back then, you wouldn't want to have anything to do with me."
"Why is that?" Mike asked.
Elizabeth sighed. "My mother was, shall we say, a 'woman of the night'. I never knew who my father was. It wasn't too long before I joined my mother in her life. But I wanted something better, so I slowly made contacts with the higher class and it wasn't long before I had my own 'house' and had many ladies working for me."
The Monkees just shook their heads, not wanting to believe Elizabeth had led such a life. She continued.
"I provided ladies for the wealthy and powerful. I went to any means necessary to keep my position. There wasn't a sin I wouldn't commit, there wasn't a sin I didn't commit, as long as I had a nice place to live, with plenty of food to eat, with fine garments to wear. I thought those things were the answer to life. How foolish and naive I was." Elizabeth chuckled and shook her head at herself.
"Then what happened?" Peter asked.
The angel looked at Peter. "The black plague happened, Peter. Young and old, rich and poor were not spared from the disease. It wasn't long before I myself took ill and lay on my deathbed, cursing God for my illness. Then, just hours before I died, a priest named Fr. Boniface came to see me. He didn't condemn me for my life, but told me about God, how Jesus had died to save mankind, how God still loved me, no matter what I had done in life." Elizabeth put her head in her hands and began to cry. "I accepted Jesus as my savior and was baptized and took holy communion. I promised God that if he spared my life, I would do good for other people, but God saw fit to take my life. But instead of being thrown into Hades, into the everlasting fire, I spent many, many years in purgatory, having my sins burned out of my body." She stopped and looked at the Monkees who were listening in rapt attention.
"The Virgin Mary, the mother of Jesus, came down and brought me out of purgatory, just like she does with other souls; but before I could enter heaven, God decided to take me up on my promise. I was made an angel, but I had to live on Earth and help others in need. So, that's what I've been doing for the last several centuries, roaming the Earth, and helping those in need. It hasn't been easy, not by a long shot, but I'm so grateful to God for getting a second chance, that I'll wander the Earth forever if he wished it. I took the last name 'Boniface' in honor of the priest that converted me."
There was silence after Elizabeth finished. None of the Monkees knew what to say, it was such a story. Then the wind began to pick up again, and the five of them decided to head back down into the house. Once back in the room, as they settled back down to sleep, Elizabeth spoke one more time.
"It was God's will that we met, and I will always be grateful for that." She kissed each of the Monkees, then the five of them fell into a deep, restful sleep.

The first rays of dawn were beginning to show through the high window in the room where the Monkees and Elizabeth slept. The angel woke first, sitting up and stretching her arms. She then looked at the Monkees sleeping peacefully on the floor. Elizabeth smiled as Mike snored slightly. She hated to wake them, but they had to get back to Caiaphas' house.
"Boys, its time to get up." Elizabeth called softly.
The Monkees slept on. She called louder, but the four men didn't stir a bit. With a small smile, she reached down and tickled their bare feet. Finally, they began to giggle and they woke up. Stiffly, they sat up and looked at her.
"Were you tickling us?" Davy asked, eyebrow raised.
"Yes." Elizabeth replied with a smile. "I couldn't think of a way to wake you."
The four Monkees looked at each other, then at Elizabeth. As one, they got up, grabbed each of Elizabeth's arms and legs, pushed her back on the bed and began to tickle her! Instantly, the angel began to laugh.
"Tickle us while we're sleeping, eh?" Micky asked evilly as he tickled her foot.
"Hahaha!" Elizabeth laughed, "Yes, stop! HAHA! I'm sorry, heeehee but we need to get going! HAHAhehehe!"
Immediately, the Monkees stopped tickling Elizabeth, ashamed that they were fooling around when there was serious work to be done today.
"We're sorry, Elizabeth." Peter said softly, releasing her arm.
"It's ok, guys." The angel replied when she stopped giggling, "I'll know better next time."
Quickly, the Monkees and Elizabeth strapped on their sandals, cinched up their belts and made their way to the front of the house. They smelled a fire burning and they walked over to the kitchen. Mary was there with another man who was throwing wood on the fire. Mary turned when she heard the five of them walk in.
"Oh, hello, my friends." Mary said. "You are up early."
"Yes, Mary." Elizabeth replied, "We came to say goodbye. We have to be on our way."
"So soon?" Mary asked, surprised. "Won't you five at least stay for the morning meal?"
Micky's stomach growled. Mary smiled at that.
"That's all I needed to hear." She smiled. "Recline over there, and I'll bring you something soon."
"May we help somehow?" Mike asked, "You've been so kind to us."
"Well, perhaps you could help Thomas here bring in more wood for the fire." Mary replied.
Mike was shocked....was this was Thomas his very, very distant ancestor? Thomas noticed Mike's stricken face.
"Are you alright, my friend?" He asked.
"Are you one of Jesus' disciples?" Mike asked.
Thomas hung his head. "Yes, I am. But I did not act like one last night when my master was arrested. I ran like a frightened sheep."
"No one is blaming you, Thomas." Mary said, "Please, you and Michael bring in more wood."
"Sure, Mary." Thomas replied. He and Mike walked out a side door.
"I'll bring in more water for you." Elizabeth offered.
"That would be very nice, child." Mary replied.
"Let me do that." Micky said, "That water jar might be heavy."
"Now, husband, "Elizabeth chided gently, "You know fetching water is a woman's job."
"Um, oh, yes, of course, my wife." Micky said quickly.
Elizabeth picked up a water jar and went out the same door Thomas and Mike had gone through.
"How is the mother of Jesus?' Peter asked Mary.
"As well as can be expected." Mary replied, "She spent the whole night in prayer and won't come to eat."
Soon, all of them returned as Mary began to cook some food. Other people began to wake and soon everyone started to eat. A blessing was said and the food was passed around. Suddenly, there was a loud knock on the door. Everyone, especially Jesus' disciples, looked at each other in concern at the early hour caller. Davy took the initiative and opened the door. A very cold, ragged man lurched into the front room. Mary came over.
"John!" Mary exclaimed. "We were so worried about you. Come sit down and eat!"
"Thank...thank you Mary." John stammered, shivering from the cold. A place at table was made for him and he quickly began to eat. After a while, John had recovered enough to tell his story.
"After our master was arrested." John began, "I was so afraid of befalling the same fate, I didn't want to even enter the city." He took a sip of water. "So I spent the night out in the desert. It became so cold, that I couldn’t' take it anymore, and I came here, hoping it would be safe."
"It is safe here." Mary said, "My late husband knew a few of the high priests. I don't think they will come here."
John nodded, relieved. "I do not wish to spoil this meal, but I need to tell you something I saw as I made my way back."
"What is it?" Mary asked.
John took a breath. "As I was walking here, still in the desert not far from the city wall, I saw Judas Iscariot. He was hanging by his filthy neck from a tree."
Several people gasped, shocked at such a thing.
"At least he saved me the trouble." Simon Peter growled angrily, "He was one of our Lord's trusted twelve! He was one of us! And he led those soldiers right to Jesus! Even kissed our master on the cheek!"
"There is something else, Simon." John said.
"What else?" Simon Peter asked.
"I took a chance and went near Caiaphas' house on my way here. There seems to be a lot of people gathering around the front gate. Do you know what's going on?"
"Jesus has been condemned by the priests." Mary said with tears in her eyes. "He is being taken to Pilate this morning."
John put his head in his hands and began to weep.
The Monkees and Elizabeth looked at each other. They had little doubt Dr. Chronos and his men would be in that crowd. It was time to go. They stood up.
"Mary." Peter said, "We are very grateful for your hospitality, but we must be on our way."
Mary nodded sadly as she patted John on the back. "Go with Yahweh's grace then, my friends." She said.
"Thank you Mary." Elizabeth replied, "May Yahweh's blessing be upon you always."
With that, the five of them left the house. They quickly made their way back to Caiaphas' house. Just like John said, there was a large crowd gathering around. Word had certainly spread fast that Jesus the prophet, the same prophet who had entered Jerusalem a few days before to cheering crowds, had been arrested, condemned for blasphemy and was soon to be taken to Pilate for sentencing. The large crowd made it hard for any of the Monkees or Elizabeth to see if Dr. Chronos or his men were near. Even Mike, who was taller than most of the people around, couldn't spot them.
"Any sign of them, Mike." Micky asked.
"Nope. Nothing." Mike replied, rubbing the stubble on his face. "Too bad we didn't have time to shave."
"Most men had beards in this era, Mike." Elizabeth replied, "It will help you fit in."
Suddenly, the gate was thrown open and several temple guards came out to push the crowd back. After a way had been cleared, more guards came out, pushing and pulling a bound, tired-looking Jesus between them. The procession then started to make it's way over to Pilate's house, with the crowd following close behind. The Monkees and Elizabeth joined the crowd, hoping perhaps Dr. Chronos would see the crowds and give up, but deep down knowing the insane scientist wouldn't give up until Jesus had been crucified.

The Monkees and Elizabeth kept pace with the crowd as much as they could. Elizabeth was feeling much stronger now, but still felt a little weak. Micky took her hand to make sure she didn't get separated from him and the others.
"There is too many people around, it will be hard to spot Dr. Chronos." ELizabeth said to the others.
"He'll have to use underhanded techniques like he did the last times." Mike said, "Those soldiers look like they mean business."
The road up ahead began to open up a little. There were many trees lining both sides, providing shade; and a place for an ambush. Micky pointed that fact out to the others.
"Let me go on up ahead." Davy said. "I'm small enough to climb those trees to see if anything is afoot."
"Please be careful Davy." Elizabeth said.
"Not to worry, Luv." Davy said with a wink. He quickly separated from the crowd and using the side alleys, managed to get ahead of the soldiers. Davy scanned the treetops, looking for anything suspicious. Not seeing anything from the ground, he began to shimmy up the nearest tree-not an easy thing to do when wearing a long tunic. Davy was about half-way up when he saw a bundle of small firecrackers and smoke bombs tied to a branch. They were attached to a wire which connected them to another bundle in the next tree. It immediately dawned on Davy that Dr. Chronos and his men were going to set of the fireworks and smoke bombs and scare everyone. There would so much confusion, it would be easy for Dr. Chronos and his men to free Jesus! Davy pulled the wires free from the bundle, ensuring that they wouldn't go off. From his vantage point, Davy saw the soldiers coming and realized he had little time. He jumped down from the tree and began to climb the next tree over, when he felt someone grab his ankle. Davy looked down to see an angry Dr. Chronos holding his ankle. His henchmen were around him.
"Get down from there, boy!" Dr. Chronos growled.
"Yes sir!" Davy said, smiling at the Doctor....then let go of the tree and fell on top of the started man. Davy picked himself up and ran before the other men could grab him. He started back towards the soldiers coming down the road.
"Stop!" Dr. Chronos shouted, but Davy had no intention of listening. Suddenly, Davy tripped over a fine trip wire that Dr. Chronos and his men had placed across the road. He fell to the ground. That wire was supposed to activate all the firecrackers and such when the soldiers walked past, but now Davy set everything off much too soon. The trees all around Davy, Dr. Chronos and his men boomed and crackled, but the soldiers coming down the road were too far away to really hear anything. A few of them remarked that they thought they heard thunder, but nobody else gave it a second thought.
Davy shook his head and began to pick himself off the ground, when he found himself roughly hauled to his feet by Dr. Chronos' men. Without a word, Dr. Chronos walked over to Davy and slapped him hard across the face. Davy's head spun from the blow and he nearly fell over. Dr. Chronos then grabbed Davy's chin.
"You are going to be very sorry you did that." Dr. Chronos growled at Davy.
"You'll be sorry, sorry for eternity, if you succeed in your evil plan." Davy replied defiantly.
Dr. Chronos smiled evilly. "What's eternity to me, if I can control time?" He said, "That's what I'll get if I succeed."
"You're crackers!" Davy shouted back.
Dr. Chronos was about to hit Davy again, when he heard the crowd coming closer. He motioned to his men, and they dragged Davy off to the side of the road and hid in some shrubbery. One of the men put a dagger to Davy's throat to ensure his silence. Seconds later, the soldiers and Jesus walked past, followed by an ever-increasing crowd of people. Davy looked around for the other three Monkees and Elizabeth, but didn't see them.
Finally, the last of the people went past. Dr. Chronos turned to Larry. "Take him back to our base and tie him up. Then come back and meet us at the place we agreed to."
"Can't we just kill him now, Dr. Chronos?" Mark asked.
"Oh, no no." Dr. Chronos chuckled. "That would be too quick. I want him and his friends to die slowly for all the trouble they've caused."
Larry nodded then hit Davy across the back of his head. Davy slumped into unconsciousness. Dr. Chronos climbed out of the shrubbery to see if the coast was clear....and came face to face with Elizabeth and the other three Monkees.
"You were right, Mike." Peter said, "It couldn't have been thunder with so few clouds in the sky."
"It ends here, Dr. Chronos." Elizabeth said sternly, opening her hands. A ball of purple energy formed between them. Dr. Chronos' eyes went wide for a second, then he smiled.
"I don't think so, angel." He sneered, "Larry! Bring over our guest."
Larry came out of the shrubs dragging an unconscious Davy in his arms. The henchman still had the dagger at Davy's throat.
"Davy!" The other three Monkees shouted.
"Let him go now!" Elizabeth commanded.
"I don't think so." Dr. Chronos said with a smirk. "Do anything to me and your little Davy dies centuries before he was born. Now I think you should put away your ball of power."
Reluctantly, Elizabeth did as she was told. She looked at Dr. Chronos angrily. "You don't know what you're doing, Dr. Chronos." She said, "Do you think the devil, Satan or whatever you want to call him, is going to keep whatever promises he made to you?"
"Why shouldn't he?" Dr. Chronos demanded.
"Because he's the prince of liars. He's full of empty promises, that's why!" Elizabeth retorted.
"He is going to help me get revenge on the Christian faith!" Dr. Chronos shouted, "They killed my wife! So now I'm going to make sure their religion never gets started!"
"You can't fight God!" Mike answered back.
"I'm not going to stand here and debate this matter with you." Dr. Chronos said sharply. "But I will tell you this. Davy is our hostage. Interfere anymore with our plans, and he dies very, very slowly. Understand?"
The three Monkees and Elizabeth nodded their heads, defeated. Dr. Chronos and his men went through the shrubs once again and were quickly out of sight. Elizabeth put a hand to her mouth and began to cry. Micky put his arms around her, trying to comfort her, but he and the other two Monkees were crying as well.
They were faced with a terrible choice: To try and stop Dr. Chronos and sacrifice Davy, or leave him alone and let history be changed-for the worse?

Dr. Chronos and his men went some distance away then stopped. Making sure they hadn't been followed, the Doctor turned to Larry.
"As I said before, take Davy back to our base and make sure he's tied up good and tight. Then meet us back where we agreed to meet before. We've only got one more chance to stop everything."
"Right, Dr. Chronos." Larry replied. He slung Davy across his shoulder and started back to their cave. The other four men made their way back into the city.
What Dr. Chronos and his men didn't know was that Davy had woken up while Dr. Chronos and his men were talking. He kept his eyes closed and listened to what the Doctor was saying. Even though his head hurt from the blow Larry gave him, Davy's mind raced for a solution. If he was taken back to their base and tied up, he'd be unable to help Elizabeth and the others stop Dr. Chronos! It didn't take much imagination to realize he was probably being used as a hostage so that the others wouldn't try to stop Dr. Chronos. Davy couldn't let that happen either! Trying not to move too much and alert Larry, Davy lifted his head, trying to find a way to make Larry let go of him. Fighting him was out of the question, since Larry was much taller and stronger than him; it seemed Dr. Chronos picked men for their strength and well as their smarts.
A few people asked Larry why he was carrying Davy. Larry replied that his friend had had too much to drink and was taking him home to sleep it off. The people just shook their heads and kept on walking.
Finally, Davy spotted his chance. Larry was carrying him through a marketplace when Davy noticed the cloth awnings hanging over the sellers' wares. Reaching out, Davy grabbed an awning support as Larry walked past and pulled hard on it. As he hoped, the awning came crashing down on the two of them! When the cloth had covered both of them, Davy began to kick at Larry and pull the cloth around Larry's head, while the merchant began to yell at them for knocking down his awning. In the confusion, Davy got free of his captor, climbed out from under the fallen awning, and ran away as fast as he could. By the time the merchant had pulled the awning off of Larry's head, Davy was long gone. Larry shoved the merchant aside and began to run around the marketplace looking for Davy. Finally realizing his captive was gone, Larry left the marketplace, the merchant still yelling curses at him for ruining his awning.

Meanwhile, Micky, Mike, Peter and Elizabeth slowly walked down the road towards Pilate's house. They had stopped crying, but were still very upset over the recent turn of events.
"This is my fault." Elizabeth lamented, "I shouldn't have brought the four of you here."
"No it's not, Elizabeth." Mike replied, "It's Dr. Chronos' fault for trying to change history in the first place."
"Don't blame yourself." Micky said, "We all knew this could be dangerous."
"But what are we going to do?" Peter asked in despair. "If we interfere anymore, Davy dies. If we don't...." His voice trailed off.
"The gates of Heaven will stay closed, countless souls will stay in Limbo, while countless lives will perish because they never heard the good news." Elizabeth finished.
"It comes down to one life or many, doesn't it?" Mike asked.
Elizabeth nodded. "Yes Mike. All we can do now is place our trust in God and leave things in his hands."
"I'd like to have Chronos' neck in my hands right now." Micky growled, "If he hurts Davy....."
"Elizabeth, you said the devil promised Dr. Chronos something if he would stop Jesus from dying?" Mike asked.
"That's true." Elizabeth replied, "He'll promise anything so you'll do as he says."
"How could someone fall for him?" Peter asked quietly.
"Oh, the devil is tricky." The angel replied with contempt. "He'll appear as a nice person, flatter you, make you think he's not so bad. And then....." She shook her head, then continued, "He's constantly at work, trying to get people to get away from God, and sadly, people are falling for it. They indulge in drugs or pleasures of the flesh. The devil and his evil world has been so marginalized these days that people even write stories about him and his demons and witches."
"Write stories?" Micky asked.
"Yes, some people even write offensive occult stories." Elizabeth replied
The three Monkees just shook their heads at that.
Just then the four of them came upon the crowd waiting in front of the gate to Pilate's residence. The gate was partially open and they could see the priests, soldiers and Jesus waiting for Pilate to make his appearance. There was a burst of trumpets and Pilate strode out to the balcony to see his visitors. He looked annoyed that he had to come outside to them, since the priests didn't want to enter his house and become defiled just before the Passover.
"What charge do you bring against this man?" Pilate asked through his translator. The Governor was an arrogant Roman who couldn't be bothered to learn the language of the region he was ruling.
"If he were not a criminal, we would not have handed him over to you." One of the chief priests answered.
Pilate rolled his eyes when the response was translated for him. He answered back again through his translator.
"Take him yourselves, and judge him according to your law."
"We do not have the right to put anyone to death." Another priest replied. Only the ruling Romans could execute somebody.
Pilate sighed as this was translated for him. He didn't like be awoken at this early hour, and now he had to resolve yet another petty dispute. He motioned with his hand for his soldiers to bring Jesus up to him, then went inside.
The heavy wooden gate leading into Pilate’s house was then shut and locked, and the three Monkees and Elizabeth could see no more. They moved off to the side and waited for what they knew would happen next.

Davy ran through the city streets as quickly as possible, cutting back, going around the block, looking behind him every so often to see if he was being followed. Finally convinced he had lost Larry, Davy stopped and caught his breath. His head still hurt where Larry had hit him, but Davy ignored the pain. He had to find his way back to the others! It was then that Davy realized that he had no idea how to get to Pilate’s house. All the streets looked the same to him. He asked several people where Pilate's house was, but after only a few blocks, he would be lost again. Davy began to despair; he knew the others would be worried about him. In fact he realized they probably wouldn't be trying to stop Dr. Chronos, thinking he was still a prisoner.
Then Davy had an idea. He got a picture of Elizabeth in his mind, then thought out to her: 'Elizabeth! Help! I'm lost! Please guide me to you!'
Elizabeth and the other three Monkees were standing in a circle holding hands and praying for guidance, when the angel's head snapped up and she gasped.
"What's wrong?" Micky asked.
"It's Davy!" Elizabeth exclaimed. "He's free, but he's lost in the city streets!"
The four of them cheered and hugged each other, drawing curious stares from bystanders. Elizabeth put a picture of Davy in her mind and thought out to him: 'Davy! Follow my voice! You're not too far away!'
Davy instantly heard Elizabeth in his head. He smiled and followed her voice. Within minutes, Davy was being smothered in hugs from his three band mates and Elizabeth. When Davy was allowed to come up for air, he told them how he had freed himself from Larry, but his head still hurt. Elizabeth gently touched the back of Davy's head and instantly the pain was gone. Davy thanked Elizabeth and she quickly filled him in on what was going on.
"But by now, Larry has probably told his boss I escaped." Davy replied when Elizabeth finished.
"True, Davy." Elizabeth replied, "But at least we can continue to try and stop Dr. Chronos in whatever he has planned next."

Elizabeth was right; Larry came to the rendezvous point and told Dr. Chronos what happened. To say Dr. Chronos was angry was putting it mildly.
"You idiot!" Dr. Chronos shouted, "That boy was our guarantee that angel and her friends wouldn't interfere anymore!"
"I'm sorry, boss." Larry said, looking at the ground.
"Bah!" Dr. Chronos spat, waving his hand at him. "Well, lets get started, as I said, we only have one more chance to do this. If you four fail me....."
"We won't, Dr. Chronos." Ian cut in.
"Good." Dr. Chronos said with an evil smile. "My boss doesn't like failure."

After what seemed like an eternity, the gate to Pilate's courtyard swung open and Jesus was taken through by the Jewish soldiers and onto the street. The priests followed closely, not looking too happy.
"What's going on?" Peter asked Elizabeth.
"Remember what happened in the Gospel according to Luke?" The angel answered, "Jesus was found to be from Galilee and taken over to King Herod for judgment."
The Monkees and Elizabeth, along with the ever-growing crowd, followed along. The walk to Herod's palace was uneventful, and Jesus was taken inside.
As it turns out, Jesus wasn't with Herod for very long. Herod was very happy to see Jesus, and questioned him about his teachings and his disciples. But Jesus wouldn't answer the snake dressed in fine clothing and simply looked straight ahead. Herod even offered Jesus his freedom with many riches if he would do just a small miracle, but Jesus stayed silent. The priests accused Jesus of many things, but Herod paid them no mind. To cover his growing anger at being ignored, Herod and then his soldiers treated Jesus with contempt and mocked him. Herod pulled off his own cloak and put it on Jesus' shoulders, then sent him back to Pilate with his complements. Despite his disappointing interview with Jesus, Herod was happy that Pilate thought about him, and the two of them became friends from that day on.
The walk back to Pilate's house also went quietly, with no sign of Dr. Chronos and his goons.
Pilate was not a happy man when he got word that Jesus had been brought back from Herod's palace. He threw down the scroll he was reading, got up off his couch and went back onto the balcony overlooking the courtyard. The courtyard door had been left open and people began to filter in behind the priests. As he stood there waiting for his translator to arrive, Pilate had an idea; since it was the Passover feast for the Jews, he would ask the people who they wanted released. It hadn't taken Pilate long to realize that the Priests were envious of Jesus and the respect he commanded, thus they wanted him executed. Finally, the translator came running over and Pilate began to speak to the priests down below him.
"You brought this man to me and accused him of inciting the people to revolt. I questioned him in your presence and have found him not guilty. Neither has Herod, since he sent him back to me." Pilate waited a moment for the translator to finish. "He has not committed a crime worthy of death, so I will have him flogged, then released."
But the priests began to yell "Crucify him!"
Pilate just shook his head and walked back into his house. The Roman soldiers grabbed Jesus and took him through a wooden door at the base of the house.
The Monkees and Elizabeth were among the people who had squeezed themselves through the courtyard door and stood against the back wall. They also noticed Mary of Magdalene, Mary the mother of Jesus, Mary, the wife of Cleophas and John had also managed to get inside the courtyard as well. Elizabeth hung her head, knowing what was going to happen to Jesus next. Sensing her sorrow, the Monkees gathered around her. Mike noticed the priests talking to their servants. After a few seconds, the servants ran out of the courtyard and onto the street again.
"I wonder what that's all about?" Mike wondered.
"They are going to get all the people who have a grudge against Jesus." Elizabeth replied. "They will gather all the priests' friends and family; even the moneychangers and merchants whom Jesus drove out of his Father's house a few days ago. They all hate Jesus after that incident."
Occasionally, over the murmur of the crowd, the sound of a whip cracking could be heard. A cry escaped Elizabeth's lips; Micky took her in his arms and held her close. He and the other Monkees were close to tears themselves. How could the Romans, who claimed to be so civilized, be so brutal to another human being? The courtyard began to fill up with newcomers; the people the priests had sent for. Once again, the trumpets blew and Pilate appeared on another balcony a little way from where he was before. This balcony was open; on it was a stone bench which Pilate came over and sat upon. The crowd gathered underneath. Through his translator, Pilate began to speak.
"Look! I am bringing him out to you so that you many know I find no guilt in him!" Pilate motioned with his hand and Jesus was shoved forward. Many people in the crowd gasped in horror when they saw Jesus; he was covered in welts, a crown of thorns was on his head and a dirty purple cloak wrapped around his shoulders.
Mary the mother of Jesus began to sob, along with the women with her. Elizabeth was crying too. She whispered, "My Lord and my God."
Davy was sick to his stomach. "If Jesus isn't guilty, why was he scourged?" He asked gravely.
Pilate stood up from his bench, watching the reaction of the crowd, hoping that seeing Jesus so mis-treated, they would be satisfied. "Behold the Man!" The Roman Governor cried.
But the priests, along with their friends and family began to shout, "Crucify him! Crucify him!"
Pilate was shocked, but he had another card to play. He motioned with his hand once again and another man, bound in chains, was brought forward to stand next to Jesus. This man was Barabbas, who had been arrested a few days earlier for murder and starting a riot.
Pilate motioned for quiet, and when it was as quiet as it was going to get, Pilate spoke again. "Recall my custom of releasing a prisoner to you at Passover time. Do you want me to release to you the one called Barabbas, a murderer, or Jesus, the King of the Jews?"
The people began to shout back "Barabbas!"
"So what shall I do with Jesus?" Pilate demanded.
Once again the crowd shouted, "Crucify him!"
Pilate couldn't understand this. "Why?" He asked, puzzled, "What has he done to deserve death?"
But everyone kept shouting even louder, "Crucify him!" Everyone that is, except the three Marys, John, Elizabeth and the Monkees. They stood there in shock that everybody was yelling for the death of someone who had done only good for them. Pilate looked at his advisors. They shrugged their shoulders, unable to figure this situation out either. One of the Centurions came over to Pilate and told him the crowd was getting out of control. Pilate tried one last time.
"Look at your King!" He shouted.
"We have no King but Caesar!" The priests shouted back.
Pilate finally realized that he was having no luck with the crowd and that a riot was breaking out. He called for a bowl of water. A servant came over with a pitcher of water and a bowl. While the servant poured the water over Pilate's hands, he announced to the crowd, "I am innocent of this man's blood. Look to it yourselves." He looked over at the guards around Barabbas. "Release him and take Jesus to be crucified."
The guards obeyed. They freed Barabbas from his chains, and took Jesus away to be crucified.
Peter looked over at Elizabeth, his face wet with tears. "Can we go back to our own time now? Please? I don't think I can handle much more."
"We must stay until the end, sweet Peter." Elizabeth said sadly, "We have to make sure nothing will be changed."
The others nodded sadly, realizing that they had to stay and watch, no matter what.

Pilate strode back inside his house, tossed his official cloak to a servant and called for wine. He was equal parts relieved and disturbed by what just happened out there. Relieved that the matter had been settled; disturbed by the way it had been settled. The Roman Governor, of course, had heard of this Jesus the prophet whom people claimed raised the dead and made the blind see; Pilate had well-paid spies in all parts of his province. Yet Pilate never expected to have Jesus brought before him; from all accounts, Jesus was peaceful, even told others to render unto Caesar what was Caesar's. Still, what could he expect in this hot, dusty land with people who had strange customs? A few days ago, Jesus rode into Jerusalem to great cheering, now those same people wanted him dead.
Also, Pilate reasoned, it didn't seem to him that Jesus tried very hard to defend himself. The priests had accused him of many crimes, but Jesus didn't say a word; only that his Kingdom was not of this world, or some such thing. Even when Pilate informed Jesus that he had the power to release or crucify him, Jesus calmly answered that Pilate's power over him had been given to him 'from above'.
So Pilate had tried other means to free Jesus, but nothing had worked, so he literally washed his hands of the whole matter. That absolved him from ordering the execution of a just man.
Didn't it?

Elizabeth motioned for the Monkees to follow her. They quickly went outside the courtyard gate and onto the street. The angel turned to the them.
"We must be especially alert now, my dear friends," Elizabeth said, "This will be Dr. Chronos' last chance to change anything."
"How about if Peter and I scout ahead?" Mike asked, "It worked before with Davy."
"Good idea, Mike." Elizabeth replied. "Keep following this road to the left and it will lead you to a city gate. Just outside the gate on a hill is Golgotha. That's where the crucifixion will be. We'll watch from the back." Mike and Peter took off down the road. Just then, Elizabeth, Davy and Micky heard their names being called. They turned and saw the three Marys and John approached them.
"Hello, my friends." Mary of Magdalene said sadly. John was supporting Mary the mother of Jesus. She was very upset that her only son would die today, but she seemed stronger and calmer than last night, as if resigned to God's will.
"It is such a sad day! Such injustice!" Mary of Magdalene said.
"It is, Mary." Elizabeth answered, "But we must put our faith in Yahweh."
"I have done so." Jesus' mother replied, "And I know in my heart that everything will work out for the glory of God."
Elizabeth, Davy and Micky nodded, amazed at her courage.
"Are you three...going to see....what happens?" John asked slowly.
"Yes we are." Davy replied, "Michael and Peter have already gone ahead."
Suddenly, another door opened out onto the street with a bang. Several Roman soldiers came out and pushed people out of the way, then Jesus was shoved out onto the street. The purple cloak was gone, but the sharp crown of thorns was still on his head. Tied to his outstretched arms was the cross-beam he would be nailed to once he arrived at Golgotha. Shoved out behind him were two other men who also looked like they had recently been scourged. They too had cross-beams tied to their arms. It seemed Jesus would have company in death. Gathering her resolve, Elizabeth took Micky and Davy's hands and began to follow the awful procession.

Mike and Peter ran down the road where Jesus would soon be coming. People were gathering on both sides of the narrow street, hoping for a glimpse of Jesus. Many women were crying, others refused to believe that Jesus had been condemned by the Romans and were standing along the road to see for themselves. The two Monkees realized Dr. Chronos and his men could be anywhere in this crowd!
"See anything, Peter?" Mike asked.
"No, Mike. There's too many people around." Peter answered, beginning to panic, "What if he's here and we don't see him and he..."
"Don't think like that, Peter." Mike said sternly. "We've come this far. We can't give up. Let's go over to Golgotha and see if anything suspicious is there."
Peter nodded and the two of them went through the city gate and walked toward a large hill not far from the gate. About half-way up, on a plateau, but still easily seen from the road, were three upright beams, which would be used to hold the cross-beams crucifixion victims carried. The area was purposely used as an execution area so that anyone coming from or going into the city could see what would happen if you messed with the Romans. The two men began to climb up the hill following a narrow trail. So far, the crowds hadn't gathered at the execution place, so the hill was empty....or so Mike and Peter thought. They had just walked around a large boulder when they came face-to-face with none other than Dr. Chronos and his men!
"Hello, Gentlemen." Dr. Chronos spat, hatred in his voice. "Fancy meeting two you here."
"Yeah, Dr. Chronos," Mike said with false happiness, "What a surprise to see you as well."
"If you two want to keep living," Dr. Chronos continued, "I suggest both of you start climbing back down this hill." The mad scientist, his men at his back, began to walk towards Mike and Peter, forcing them to back down the trail. Peter hung back behind Mike.
"Why...why is that, Dr. Chronos?" Peter asked, "Is there something you don't want us to see?"
Dr. Chronos chuckled. "There is nothing for you two boys to see. Just three upright beams which won't be used today to crucify anyone, ever!"
"You're evil!" Mike shouted.
"No, just a man who wants vengeance on those who've hurt him." Dr. Chronos replied.
While Mike had been talking to Dr. Chronos, Peter had been dragging his hand along the side of the hill next to the narrow trail they were on. Finally, Peter's hand was filled with dirt.
"Duck, Mike!" Peter shouted.
Mike ducked as Peter threw a large handful of dirt and small rocks in Dr. Chronos' face, raising up a dirt cloud. The Doctor shouted in anger and ordered his men to attack Mike and Peter, but Mike was already on the move. He grabbed Dr. Chronos by his tunic and shoved him into his own men. Since his men were in a row behind him, they fell like dominoes onto the trail. Peter grabbed more dirt and threw it at the five men, blinding them. Mike took this opportunity to push, one by one, Dr. Chronos and his men off the trail. They tumbled down the hill, unable to stop, and landed in a heap at the bottom, sore and bruised. The last man, Larry, almost took Mike with him, but Peter hit him with a rock and he quickly joined his friends at the bottom of Golgotha.
Mike and Peter looked down at the fallen men with grim satisfaction. Even though Dr. Chronos and his men were evil, Mike and Peter took no joy in hurting them. Slowly, the five men got up and stumbled off into the desert.
Mike looked over at his friend. "Good thinking, Pete. Now lets see what Dr. Chronos did up there."
The two Monkees raced up the trail until they reached the plateau where the crucifixion would be held. They looked around; nothing seemed to be out of the ordinary, just dirt and stones and......dynamite?
Mike and Peter came closer to where the upright beams were. At the bottom of the three beams were sticks of TNT. They were connected to each other by wires and then to a detonator located further up the hill. Obviously, Dr. Chronos planned on blowing up the beams when the procession came to the plateau, terrifying the Romans, who of course didn't know about explosives, and making them too scared to crucify Jesus. Working quickly, Mike carefully undid the wires from the detonator while Peter untied the TNT from the beams. Then, they dug a hole a little ways away and placed everything inside it, then covered the whole. Just as they finished, a Roman Centurion marched over to them. With him were the men who would do the execution.
"What are you two doing?" He demanded, "Get out of here before I have you two nailed on crosses as well!"
"Yes sir, right away sir!" Mike and Peter said, then started to run back down the hill. From their vantage point, they could see that the procession was exiting the city gate and would soon start up Golgotha. Mike and Peter got down the hill just as the first of the Roman soldiers arrived. Jesus and the other two men were pushed up the hill, followed by more soldiers, trying to keep the huge crowd at bay.
Elizabeth sensed Mike and Peter and quickly led Micky and Davy to where they stood off to the side. Hugs were quickly exchanged and Mike and Peter quickly told the others what happened.
"You two did very well." Elizabeth said, then gave a sad sigh. "Still, let's go and witness our Lord's sacrifice."
The Monkees agreed and the five of them slowly started the climb up Golgotha.

*The Monkees and Elizabeth slowly climbed the Golgotha hill. Many other people did the same, including the three Marys and John. Many people were crying, others were saying Jesus deserved death for his blasphemy, while others were curious onlookers. Crucifixions were pretty common in Jerusalem. Nobody seemed to notice that the sky was turning a little dark, even though it was mid-day...
There were so many people gathering to see the crucifixion that the Monkees and Elizabeth couldn't get onto the plateau itself. The Roman soldiers made sure the executioners had enough room to do their ghastly work. Suddenly, screams cut through the air as the victims had their wrists nailed to the cross-beams they had been carrying from Pilate's house. Elizabeth collapsed. Micky caught her and gently laid her on the ground. He stroked her cheek, while Davy took off his outer cloak and made it into a pillow for Elizabeth's head.
Now, the three men, with Jesus in the middle, were hauled to their feet while a rope was attached to the back of each cross-beam. When that was done, an executioner on a ladder behind each upright beam pulled on the rope while others lifted the men up. When each of them were several feet off the ground, the cross-beam was nailed and tied to the upright beam. Finally, the men's feet were placed on top of each other and nailed to the upright beam. More screams echoed down the hill. After making sure everything was secured, a small sign was hung over the heads of each of the men, telling anybody going past why they were being crucified. The men on either side of Jesus had signs saying they were thieves, but Jesus had a larger sign placed above his head, it read 'Jesus the Nazorean, the King of the Jews.' It was also written in Hebrew, Latin and Greek so that anybody from a foreign land would understand it. When the priests read the inscription, they were livid. One of them went over to the head centurion.
"Pilate should not have written, 'The King of the Jews' he should have written, 'This man claimed to be The King of the Jews'!"
The centurion smirked at the priest. "Pilate thought you might protest that sign, so he told me to tell you, 'What I have written, I have written'!"
The priest glared at the centurion for a moment, then went back to his fellow priests. The centurion chuckled to himself, then went back to his soldiers, who were casting lots for Jesus' tunic.
Now that the men had been crucified, some people walked away, but most settled down on the ground to watch. That gave the Monkees, who had settled down next to Elizabeth, a better view of what was going on. Peter took one glance and turned his back, while Micky, Mike and Davy watched in horror, unable to look away. Elizabeth woke up from her faint and looked at the crosses. Micky tried to shield her eyes from the awful scene, but she gently pushed his hand away.
"I must look upon our savior, Micky. See, even Mary his mother is at the foot of the cross. Can't I at least watch?"
Micky helped her sit up better and leaned her against his chest. Mike put an arm around Davy's shoulders. Peter was crying softly.
At the foot of the cross stood the three Marys and John the disciple. Jesus looked down at his mother. "Woman, behold your son." Then after drawing a painful breath, he said to John, "Behold your mother." John nodded at his master and from that day forward took care of Mary.
A little ways behind the four of them, the priests shouted abuse at Jesus. "He saved others, let him save himself if he is the chosen one, the messiah of God!"
Even the soldiers laughed at Jesus. "If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself!"
Jesus wasn't even spared abuse from the two thieves crucified with him. The Monkees couldn't believe people could taunt somebody dying such a horrible death! It also sickened them that people could just sit there and watch someone die like they were watching a sporting event! Mike wanted to get up and scream 'What's wrong with you people?!' but just managed to keep his cool. A few people began to notice that the sky was getting darker as time went on, but passed it off as a dust storm in the desert.
Suddenly, Jesus cried out, "My God, my God, why have you abandoned me!?" Elizabeth, Micky, Mike and Davy began to cry, while Peter, who had been crying, turned around to look at Jesus. The sky grew even more dark, and the wind started to blow. People began to be afraid; several started back down the hill and into the city.
A bystander soaked a sponge with cheap wine, put it on a stick and gave it to Jesus to drink. Jesus tasted the wine, then cried out once again: "Father, into your hands I commend my spirit!" With that, Jesus bowed his head and died. There was an eclipse of the sun at that moment, and the sky turned pitch black. The wind began to howl and it started to rain. People screamed and chaos reigned as people began to flee the scene, beating their breasts. Lightning and thunder crashed in the sky. Even the Roman soldiers, who had been trained to handle any situation, were alarmed by what was happening. The centurion who had told off the priest earlier exclaimed, "Truly, this was the son of God!"
The Monkees and Elizabeth stayed where they were. Mike pulled off his outer cloak and used it to try and keep them from getting wet. Elizabeth kept staring at Jesus hanging on the cross. Suddenly, she got up and started walking over to where he was. The Monkees were going to follow, but then decided she needed some private time alone. The four of them felt....unworthy....of coming close to Jesus. They watched as the angel knelt down at the foot of the cross, still keeping her eyes on Jesus. Mary the mother of Jesus was lying on the ground in grief, her head against John's chest.
Mike looked at the other three Monkees. "Well guys....its finally over, our job is done." He said over the thunder.
"Yeah, over." Davy said quietly.
Micky put his hand on Davy's shoulder. "Don't worry, Davy." He said, "Jesus is dead, but will rise up in three days."
"True, but you four will not!" A voice growled at them. An instant later, the four of them felt knives at their throats.
The cloak covering their heads was pulled off and the Monkees looked up. It was Dr. Chronos and his four henchmen. They had watched Jesus' crucifixion from the bottom of Golgotha and had waited for this moment to ambush the Monkees. In the rain, darkness and confusion of the moment, nobody noticed what was going on.
"Let's go boys." Dr. Chronos sneered, "There are so many things you have to answer for!" The Monkees were roughly pulled to their feet. Micky looked over at Elizabeth, who was still praying at the foot of Jesus' cross. He decided to take a chance.
"Elizabeth! HELP!" Micky shouted.
Elizabeth turned instantly and saw what was going on. She stood up, looked up at Jesus' cross.....then disappeared, her face expressionless.
"ELIZABETH!" Micky screamed, shocked that she didn't even try to help them. The other Monkees were shocked too. They couldn't believe Elizabeth would abandon them! Dr. Chronos' laughed evilly.
"It seems your angel friend has no more use for you four, now that you've done what she wanted."
"She'll be back for us!" Mike shouted.
"Maybe, but she may not recognize what she finds." Dr. Chronos replied. The Monkees faces went white at that remark. Dr. Chronos looked over at the crosses, then back over to his henchmen. "Let's take our friends back to our base and show them some hospitality!"
Larry, Mark, Ian and Henry laughed and dragged the Monkees down Golgotha and into the desert, keeping their knives next to their captives' ribs the whole time. With all that was going on, nobody paid them any mind.

Back at Jesus' cross, a priest named Joseph from the town of Arimathea, fresh from an audience with Pilate, came to take Jesus' body down. He hadn't gone along with the other priests in their plans to kill Jesus, but still waited for the Kingdom of God. He had seen the nine men coming down the hill and out into the desert and briefly wondered why they didn't go into the city where it would be safe, but once he saw Jesus he didn't give the men another thought......

The wind and rain died down somewhat as the Monkees and their captors moved away from Jerusalem. Still, the sky was dark and the wind blew mightily. The Monkees might've tried to escape in all the bad weather, but Dr. Chronos had told them if one tried to escape, the other three would be knifed. So, finally, they came upon some hills and the nine of them walked up a short hill to a cave about half-way up. It looked like any other cave in the area, but if one looked closely, one would see the small solar panel/windmill hidden among the rocks and scrub. A wire from the device ran into the cave, thus Dr. Chronos and his men had power from the sun by day and the wind at night.
The Monkees were shoved inside the cave opening. They were inside a tunnel chamber that went for many feet inside the earth. By the light of the lamps hanging on the walls, the Monkees could see a few side chambers that branched off from the main tunnel. They guessed one of those chambers held the Doctor's time machine.
"Like our base?" Dr. Chronos asked, noticing the Monkees were looking around, "All the comforts of home."
"Your home, not ours, shotgun." Mike replied.
Mark, who was holding Mike, punched Mike in the side. Mike fell to his knees.
Dr. Chronos chuckled. "Oh, such a clever answer." He smirked, then motioned to Larry. The henchman put his knife against Davy's throat. "Now why don't you three get out of those wet clothes, hmmm? And take off the sandals as well."
Seeing the knife at Davy's throat, Micky, Mike and Peter obeyed. Soon, they were only wearing their underwear. Ian took the rope belts the three of them were wearing and cut them into pieces. Then he and Mark took the ropes and tied the three Monkees' hands behind their backs and tied their feet together as well. When they were secured, Davy was also obliged to take off his tunic and sandals as well. Soon, he was tied up like his friends. They were forced to sit against the wall, while Dr. Chronos and his men went into another chamber and changed their clothes.
Soon enough, Dr. Chronos and his men came back into the main chamber. Each of them had something in their hands. As they approached the Monkees, they could see Dr. Chronos had an electrical cord in his hand, while his henchmen had sticks. Dr. Chronos looked down at his captives, his eyes dark with hate and anger.
"You four ruined my life's work." He said darkly. "You four have denied me my revenge on the Christian church." The Doctor began to slowly wind one end of the electrical cord around his right hand, leaving one end dangling. "So now we will make you four suffer like your savior."
"We only kept you from changing what was supposed to happen in the first place!" Davy exclaimed, getting scared, "Just because you have a problem with the church, doesn't give you the right to ruin it for other people!"
That was the last thing Davy or any of the Monkees said, or rather, could say for a long time. Dr. Chronos growled and pulled Davy onto his knees, then began to beat his back with the electrical cord. Davy screamed in pain. The other three Monkees tried to help him, but were unable to because of their bonds. They soon had their own problems for Mark, Ian, Henry and Larry began to beat them with their sticks.
Soon, the cave was filled with screams as Dr. Chronos and his men took out their anger on the helpless Monkees.

It was still pouring rain outside the cave when Dr. Chronos walked over to the cave entrance. The sky wasn't as dark as before; the eclipse of the sun had passed, but the sky still rumbled with thunder and lightning. He looked down at the ground, all wet and muddy from the rain and had yet another wicked idea for his captives.
"Bring them over here." Dr. Chronos commanded his men.
The Doctor's henchmen dragged the still-bound semi-conscious Monkees over to him. They were covered in welts, bruises and burns from the tortures afflicted on them and appeared to be in shock. Dr. Chronos lifted Mike's chin.
"As the last phase of our hospitality, I think its only fitting that you and your friends should be treated like you treated us on Golgotha."
Mike stared back with anger in his eyes, but didn't have the strength to answer the Doctor. Dr. Chronos smiled and looked over at his henchmen.
"Toss them down the hillside. Then when the storm ends, we'll stake them out for the animals to eat."
The four henchmen grinned evilly and pushed the Monkees out of the cave and down the hill. They rolled down and landed in a heap, too exhausted to move.
Just then, the wind died down and rain began to slow down. Instead of a cold rain falling on them, the rain felt warm on their skin and it began to revive them. The terrible pain all over their bodies began go away. As the rain fell on them, their injuries began to fade from their bodies. All the cuts, bruises, burns and welts simply washed off their skins, as if it was nothing more than dirt. Slowly, the Monkees sat up, amazed at what was happening to them. Within a minute, the four of them were completely healed and pain free. After another minute, the rain stopped and the clouds began to move away. The Monkees noticed as well that their bonds had been loosened by the water. They began to work themselves free, but just then Dr. Chronos and his men came down the hill towards them. Mike was the first to get his hands free, but kept them behind his back. Dr. Chronos and his men stopped several feet away from the Monkees, in shock to see them completely healed up and uninjured.
"What's going on?" Dr. Chronos demanded, fear starting to creep into his voice.
"If you don't know, doc, I feel sorry for you." Mike smiled...then began to lob mud and rocks at the five men. The other Monkees kept working at their ropes and soon Peter was free too. He helped keep Dr. Chronos and his men at bay while Micky and Davy tried to get loose. But slowly, the insane doctor and his men were getting closer. Finally Micky got himself untied just as Mark swung his knife at Mike. Mike ducked and punched Mark in the face, knocking him into his four cronies. They slipped on the mud and went down. That gave the Monkees and opportunity to untie their feet. Peter went over to Davy and tried to untie his hands.
"Hurry, Peter!" Davy yelled.
"Um, how do you untie a square knot?" Peter asked.
"Oh no…" Davy moaned.
"We don't have time for this!" Mike yelled. He picked up the still-bound Davy and threw him over his shoulder. Then, he and Peter and Micky started to run back towards Jerusalem. Dr. Chronos and his men finally got out of the mud and chased after them.
It was slow going for everybody, the recent rainfall making the ground very muddy and slippery. Mike was falling further and further behind Micky and Peter because he was carrying Davy. Davy was able to kick the ropes off his feet, but couldn't undo his hands. Mike tried to untie Davy with one hand while he ran, but wasn't having much luck.
"Drop me, Mike." Davy breathed, "I'm just slowing you down."
Mike didn't answer Davy, but tightened his grip on his English friend, letting him know he had no intention of doing such a thing.
Finally, the city was in sight and there was a dirt road to follow. Mike put Davy down and while they ran, Mike was able to get the ropes off Davy's wrists. They thought they were home free....until the road buckled under them and they slid down the side of the road. Their pursuers came down after them. The Monkees found themselves trapped in a large, deep depression with five angry knife-wielding men......

Dr. Chronos and his four henchmen pulled out long, sharp knives and backed the four Monkees against one side of the depression. The Monkees knew that they had had it. They were outnumbered, had no weapons and were dressed only in their boxer shorts.
"I don't know how you boys healed up so fast," Dr. Chronos growled, "But we're going to make sure it doesn't happen again!"
"Before you kill us, Dr. Chronos," Peter begged, stalling for time, "Tell us why think the Christian church killed your wife."
"I guess there's no harm in that." The doctor replied. "Many years ago, before you four were even born, I was married to the most beautiful woman in the world. Rose was her name." Dr. Chronos smiled at the thought. "She and I were Catholics, married in the Catholic Church and all that, though she was more devout than I was. I had just received my Doctorate in Physics and had started to teach at the University of Los Angeles. One Sunday, only a few months after we were married, the weather was very bad out. I didn't want to go out in the bad weather, but my wife had it drilled in her from childhood that to miss Sunday mass was a mortal sin."
Dr. Chronos looked darkly at the Monkees. "So she went out and began to walk to our church. That was the last time I saw her alive."
The pain was very clear in Dr. Chronos' eyes. "As she walked to Sunday mass, a driver lost control on the wet streets, jumped the curb, and...struck and...killed my wife. He then crashed into a tree and died as well." Tears began to roll down his cheeks. "All because the church brainwashed her into going to mass every Sunday!" He yelled. "If she had stayed at home, she'd be alive today!!"
Dr. Chronos and his men moved closer to the Monkees. "Everybody was oh so sympathetic to me, saying how sorry they were that she died. I tried to make the priest apologize. He refused. The coroner gave me another blow; my wife was in the early stages of pregnancy when she died!"
Dr. Chronos face went red with rage. "I made a vow to get revenge on the Catholic church for what they had done to me! What they had done to my Rose! Many months went by before I hit upon a plan to hurt the church; prevent it from even forming! So, I started work on my time machine, but lacked the needed funds. A man named Mr. Zero approached me, claiming he had a grudge against the church too. He gave me the money to fund my research and hire my four assistants here. Everything was going fine, until you and your angel friend showed up! Now the four of you will die!"
The Monkees huddled together as the scientist and his men raised their knives.....
Suddenly, a brilliant white light shone down upon the area. It was a pleasant light to the Monkees, but a harsh, glaring light to Dr. Chronos and his men. Blinded by the glare, Dr. Chronos and his men covered their eyes and backed away from the Monkees. In the middle of that light, floating several feet above the ground, was Elizabeth, resplendent in her white gown and angel wings. She now had her full strength back.
"Elizabeth! Are we ever glad to see you!" Mike called out.
"I'm glad to see you boys as well." The angel smiled brightly. "I'm sorry I had to leave you for awhile, but I had to find a way to stop Dr. Chronos once and for all. I prayed to the Holy Father to watch over you and he used the rain to heal you."
"Thank you, Elizabeth." Micky said.
The angel turned to Dr. Chronos and his men. "You have failed in your evil quest Dr. Chronos. What good would it do to kill these boys?"
"I want someone to pay for what the Catholic Church did to me!" Dr. Chronos shouted.
Elizabeth shook her head. "You're a brilliant man, yet you've let hate and anger guide you and you've let yourself be deceived by the devil."
"What do you mean?" Dr. Chronos asked.
In reply, Elizabeth looked at Mark, Larry, Ian and Henry. She pointed a finger at them. "Show yourselves, your true selves!" She commanded.
Instantly, the four men gave unholy screams. Their skins turned pitch black and their clothes disappeared as thick black hair covered their bodies. Black wings with claws at the tips sprang from their backs, and their eyes turned red while fangs grew in their mouths.
The Monkees gripped each other in terror. Never had they seen such a thing! Elizabeth came lower to the ground and reassured them.
"You have nothing to fear from them, boys." The angel promised. "They were the ones who attacked me earlier before you found me on the beach. I beat them before and I'll do it again if I have to." She said, looking over at the hideous creatures.
Dr. Chronos stood stock still in complete, utter terror at the sight. "What did...you do to them?" He stammered.
"I made them reveal what they were the whole time; demons in human disguise."
The four demons growled at Elizabeth, but made no move towards her.
"Demons?" Dr. Chronos repeated.
"Yes, Dr. Chronos." Elizabeth replied, "It seems Satan didn't trust you with human help."
Dr. Chronos could only stare at the angel. She gave him a little smile and continued.
"I have another surprise for you. This one might be a little more pleasant."
Instantly at Elizabeth's side was another angel, all in white with brilliant wings. She had brown shoulder-length hair and green eyes. Dr. Chronos gasped when he recognized her.
"Rose? Is that you?" Dr. Chronos asked, amazed. "My sweet San Antonio Rose?"
"Yes, Tim. It's me." Rose replied.
"I've missed you so much." Dr. Chronos said, tears coming down his cheeks.
"I've missed you too, but I've been saddened by what you've been doing since I went away." Rose replied.
"I...I did this all for you!" Dr. Chronos replied quickly, "I wanted to avenge your death!"
Rose shook her head. "Why take vengeance on the church? They didn't force me to attend mass that Sunday. I went of my own free will."
"You told me you were taught you'd have a mortal sin if you missed mass!" Dr. Chronos replied hotly.
"A mortal sin if I purposely missed mass, Tim." Rose replied softly. "If the weather was nice and I chose to stay home. But if there are circumstances that stop you from going, like bad weather, then it isn't a sin." Rose came closer to her husband. "I went to church because I wanted to, my husband, not because of some church edict. There is something else you should know, Tim. This is the reason Elizabeth asked me to come here. To tell you the truth behind my death."
"What's that?" Dr. Chronos asked.
"As my soul left my body and it was taken by my guardian angel to be judged by God, I took a last look upon the Earth." Rose paused then continued. "I saw Satan leave the body of the man who drove the car that hit me."
Dr. Chronos and the Monkees gasped. The scientist staggered back a few steps, then sat down on the wet ground.
"Satan....Satan killed you?" He stammered.
"Yes, Tim." Rose answered, "For whatever reason, he made the driver jump the curb and kill me."
"No! No!! I don't believe it!" Dr. Chronos shouted, climbing to his feet. "He's been the one helping me with my plan!"
"Yes and it was a very good plan, too, if I might say so myself." Said another voice. It was Mr. Zero, better known as Satan.
Everybody turned to look at him. The four demons bowed to the ground at their master. Satan was floating above the ground like Rose and Elizabeth. He was wearing a red suit with a black cloak. A ring of red fire surrounded him. He leaned on a walking stick with a skull at the top as if he was standing on solid ground.
"You planned all this?" Dr. Chronos shouted at Satan.
"Of course I did, you stupid mortal!" Satan laughed, "It was an easy matter to influence the driver to imagine a child running across the street, so he'd drive onto the sidewalk and kill your wife!"
"Then he took advantage of your grief and anger and supported your time travel work." Rose finished.
"You used me!" Dr. Chronos shouted.
Satan merely shrugged his shoulders and turned to the four demons still bowing down. "You four have failed me. Twice. First, you failed to kill the angel Elizabeth, then you didn't prevent her and her friends from foiling my plans." He sighed. "Go back down where you belong, I'll punish you later. Severely. Now go."
The four demons turned into dark funnel clouds and sucked themselves into the ground. Satan then turned to Dr. Chronos.
"Now what shall I do with you, Dr. Chronos? You failed me as well. I invested a lot of time and money on you and you failed to give me results."
"Yes, stopping the formation of your enemy, the Christian church!" Dr. Chronos yelled.
Satan lowered himself down to the ground and began to walk towards Dr. Chronos. "Very true, Doctor. And I am not happy about that at all!" He shot a red beam of light at the scientist, but it was blocked by a white beam coming from Rose and Elizabeth.
"Get out of my way, angels!" Satan growled, "You might've defeated my demons, but you're no match for me!"
"He's right, ladies." Dr. Chronos said, "Stay out of this. I've caused enough suffering as it is."
"No, Tim." Rose replied. "Satan has no power over you, except what you give him. Ask for God's forgiveness for your sins, and feel his Holy Spirit fill you once again."
Satan growled and leveled a huge fireball at the angels. They were barely able to deflect it, but the effort weakened them.
"I said stay out of this!" Satan shouted, "Before I..."
Satan got no further, because the four Monkees tackled him and knocked him into the mud. Satan waved his hand and the Monkees flew off of him and landed several feet away, stunned. The Devil stood up and the mud fell off his clothes.
"I'll deal with you four later." He thundered, then turned to see Dr. Chronos kneeling in the mud, looking up into heaven.
"Lord God, I'm sorry!" Dr. Chronos sobbed, "I'm so sorry for what I've done and what I tried to do! Please, please forgive me!"
Rose and Elizabeth glowed brightly for a moment, then they floated over to the sobbing man. "He has forgiven your sins, Tim." Rose said quietly.
Satan screamed and hurled another fireball at the three of them, but it faded before it could reach them. Hissing in anger, he looked at the Monkees who were slowly getting to their feet. Satan hurled a fireball at them too, but it disappeared before it even got close.
"You're beaten, Satan." Elizabeth said, "They are all under God's protection. Go back to where you came from!"
"This isn't over!" Satan screamed, "It will never be over, until I have all souls bowing down to me!"
"And we'll be around to stop you, Satan." Rose replied. "Now leave us!"
In a blaze of fire, Satan vanished.
The Monkees slowly walked over to Rose, Elizabeth and Dr. Chronos. He bowed his head at the four musicians.
"I am so sorry for what I've done to you boys." Dr. Chronos said tearfully. I let my anger get the best of me and I've done so much harm. Will you forgive me?"
"We forgive you, Dr. Chronos." Davy replied. The other Monkees nodded their heads.
"Its time to go back to our own time now." Elizabeth said, "But first, I must take care of something." There was a distant rumble like an avalanche.
"What did you do?" Micky asked.
"I caused a cave-in of Dr. Chronos' base." The angel replied, "So nobody will no what happened there."
"Let's join hands and concentrate on getting back to the twentieth century." Rose said.
Everybody formed a circle and joined hands. "Concentrate on the boy's home." Elizabeth said. Suddenly, it was quiet and dark. Within a few seconds, they were standing in the living room of the Monkees' pad. The guys helped Rose and Elizabeth sit down on the couch.
"Finally." Mike said softly. "Safe and sound." *

The Monkees went to put on more clothing and wash up while Rose, Elizabeth and Dr. Chronos stayed in the living room. The two angels changed into human form; Elizabeth once again wore her white dress while Rose wore a similar dress of pale green. Dr. Chronos knelt down by the couch where the two angels were sitting.
"Rose, Elizabeth, thank you for saving me." He said softly, "You could've left me for Satan, but you showed me his evil ways and protected me from his power."
"My job is to help people, Dr. Chronos, not condemn." Elizabeth replied, "When you said the church had killed your wife, I knew then I had to seek her out and find out what happened."
"I told Elizabeth how I died," Rose continued, "And that down deep you were a good person, but led astray by your grief and anger. I asked the Lord's permission to come to Earth with Elizabeth. He sent us back before you committed the sin of murder."
"I swear I will do penance for my sins." Dr. Chronos said to the two angels, "I will spend the rest of my life in the service of God."
Smiling, Rose and Elizabeth stood up and helped Dr. Chronos to his feet. Rose kissed her husband. "I will pray constantly for you Tim." She said, "So that one day you will be with me in Heaven."
Dr. Chronos nodded his head. "We will be together again someday, my San Antonio Rose." He said, kissing her hand.
With a smile, Rose slowly faded from sight. Dr. Chronos sighed.
"I must be going Elizabeth." He said, "I have so much to do, a lot to think about."
"Don't you want to say goodbye to the boys?" Elizabeth asked.
"No...no my dear. It would be too awkward. Tell them I wish them the best, and that I thank them for all they did."
"I will, Dr. Chronos." Elizabeth replied.
"Tim. Call me Tim." The scientist replied, "I've given up science forever."
"Very well, Tim." Elizabeth replied. "I will pray for you too. May God be with you."
"And may you greatly succeed in helping others like you did me." Tim said, kissing Elizabeth's hand. Then, without a backward glance, he left the pad.
A few seconds later, the Monkees came from their bedrooms. They were now wearing jeans and T-shirts, but still had stubble on their faces. Mike looked at the clock on the wall.
"You angels brought us back home only a few hours after we had left.....hey, where's Rose and Dr. Chronos?"
Elizabeth filled them in on what happened.
"You think Dr. Chronos will keep his word?" Peter asked.
"Only God knows, Peter." Elizabeth replied. "Only he can see into the future."
The Monkees and Elizabeth stared at each other for several long seconds. Nobody wanted to say what was on their minds.
"Well, what will you do now, Elizabeth?" Micky finally asked, afraid of the answer.
Elizabeth looked down at her hands. "My work here is done." She replied in a whisper, "I....have to move on."
"Move on? No you can't! Please stay! You can't leave!" The Monkees all said in a jumble of voices.
Elizabeth smiled and raised her hands for quiet. Micky walked over and took her hands in his, then looked at Mike.
"Get the rope, Mike, we're keepin' her here!" He said with an evil laugh. Mike started to walk away.
"Wait, wait!" Elizabeth said with a laugh, gently pulling her hands free. "Why don't you boys get some sleep and we'll talk about this in the morning?"
"Yeah, and while we sleep, you disappear." Mike said, "Now where's that rope?" He looked around.
"I don't think tying her up would stop her from leaving, Mike." Peter said with a sad smile.
"Boys, I promise I'll still be here in the morning." Elizabeth said, holding up her right hand. She walked over and touched each of the Monkees on their foreheads. "Now get to bed."
"Where will you sleep?" Davy asked.
Immediately, all four Monkees offered the angel the use of their beds. Elizabeth declined.
"I'll be fine, right out here." She smiled, "Now shoo!"
The Monkees said goodnight, then went into their bedrooms. After changing into their pajamas, they climbed into bed and thanks to Elizabeth's touch, fell into a deep, restful sleep.
Elizabeth sighed as she watched the Monkees go into their bedrooms. When she sensed they were asleep, she waved her hand and turned off all the lights. Next she made a lit candle appear in her hand and placed it on the floor in the middle of the living room. Finally, the angel knelt down in front of the candle, folded her hands together, and spent the rest of the night in prayer.

The guys woke from a deep, pleasant sleep from the smell of bacon frying. They quickly washed, shaved and dressed and hurried down into the kitchen. There they found Elizabeth frying bacon in a large pan. She was now dressed in cut-off jeans and a blue and white top. Elizabeth looked up as the Monkees came in.
"Good Morning, guys!" Elizabeth said happily, though her eyes looked sad. "Sleep well?"
"Best sleep I've had in a long time." Micky replied. The other three nodded in agreement.
"I know you boys are hungry like I am, since its been over nineteen hundred years since we last ate." She joked.
The Monkees laughed at that. Soon, the bacon was done, along with the eggs and toast. After the blessing, the five of them quickly began to eat. Nobody said anything while they were eating, but Micky kept glancing over at Elizabeth every so often.
Elizabeth got up after they ate and began to clear the table. Peter got up too and helped her. Micky, Mike and Davy left the table and went into the living room. They all looked at each other and were thinking the same thing; Elizabeth was going to leave them soon.
Elizabeth and Peter quickly washed the dishes and put them away. Then they walked into the living room. Micky, Mike and Davy stood up as she came over.
"Well, boys...." The angel began, "I'm sorry, but...."
"Please reconsider." Peter begged. "What if Satan comes looking for us?"
"As long as you four avoid sin, even the near occasion of sin, Satan will have no power over you." Elizabeth replied, looking at Peter sadly. "It's not my decision to leave. It's time for me to move on."
"Where?" Davy asked.
"I don't know, wherever I'm sent. I follow God's will." Elizabeth walked over and gave Davy a hug and kiss.
"Goodbye Davy. I'll miss you."
Davy started to cry. "I'll miss you too, Elizabeth."
The angel walked over to Mike and gave him a hug and kiss. "Goodbye, Mike. I'll miss you too."
Mike tried to hold back his tears, but couldn't. "Take care of yourself, Elizabeth." He choked.
Elizabeth came over to Peter. He began to sob and gave her a huge hug. "You'll always be special to me, Elizabeth." Peter finally managed to say.
"And you as well, sweet Peter." Elizabeth replied, a tear starting to fall down her cheek. She kissed his cheek, then walked over to Micky, who was looking down at the floor.
As Elizabeth approached, Micky looked up, determination in his face. He took Elizabeth's hand. "Come with me." He said, and led her outside and onto the balcony. There, he picked up a beach blanket lying on the railing and continued to lead Elizabeth down the steps and onto the beach. The two of them kicked off their sandals and walked hand in hand, carrying their sandals. They walked along the beach for a few minutes, until Micky was sure they couldn't be spotted from the pad. He found a secluded area by some rocks. Only then did he let go of Elizabeth's hand and spread out the beach blanket. Micky sat down and gently pulled Elizabeth down to him. Neither of them spoke as they watched the waves crash against the shore. Finally, Micky looked over at Elizabeth and cupped her face in his hands.
"Elizabeth, please don't leave." Micky said. He took a deep breath. "I love you. We can work something out."
The angel began to sob. Micky put his arms around her and held her as she wept, her tears soaking his T-shirt. He murmured words of comfort to her as he himself cried. After a long time, she was able to look up at Micky.
"I love you too, Micky." She cried, "But I must continue on my mission."
"Why?" Micky demanded angrily. "Why must you still roam the Earth for so long? Can't God cut you a break after all we did for him?"
"I spent last night in prayer, begging the Holy Father to let me stay where I am. I felt his love, but he never answered me." The angel replied. "Remember the night before as we looked up at the full moon? She asked.
Micky nodded his head.
"When the moon is full, think of me and I'll be with you. Now before I leave, let me have one last kiss." She said.
Micky engulfed Elizabeth's mouth with his, wishing the kiss would never end. Finally, Elizabeth pulled away and looked in Micky's eyes.
"Goodbye, Micky my love." She whispered, "I'll always love you." With that, The angel began to fade from Micky's sight.
"No, NO!" Micky shouted, futilely clutching at empty air, "Don't go, Elizabeth, don't go!"
But the angel disappeared, her face the last thing to vanish.
"NOOO!" Micky shouted at the heavens. He brought his knees up to his chest, wrapped his arms around his knees and cried.

Mike, Peter and Davy found Micky in that same position, still crying, several hours later. Mike and Peter helped Micky stand up and slowly walked him back to the pad. Davy picked up the beach blanket and shook the sand off of it. Then he picked up Micky's sandals and followed his band mates back home.

One month later........

The Monkees came into their pad after yet another well-paying gig. After Elizabeth had left, they had been getting offers left and right, so rent and food money was no longer a concern. Still, they hadn't forgotten the lessons Elizabeth taught them.
The first thing they had done was join a nearby Christian Church, and each of them had long, private talks with the pastor. He was a pious man who gave them all practical advice to start on their journey with God. Next, they put aside a part of all the money they made at their gigs and donated it to different charities. Other times, they did benefit concerts with the proceeds going to charity. Finally, the Monkees personally helped others, whether it was fixing a leaky faucet or mowing an elderly man's yard for free. Despite their sadness of Elizabeth leaving, the four of them felt good helping those in need. The Monkees were even nice to Mr. Babbitt!
Tonight, however, marked one month the angel had left them. Mike, Peter and Davy could see the sadness in Micky's eyes as he trudged upstairs to change out of his stage clothes. They wished they could say or do something to make him feel better, but the truth was, they all missed Elizabeth terribly. They only knew her a few days, but she had left such an impression, that her leaving left a huge hole in their hearts; especially Micky's.
The drummer quickly changed into shorts and a T-shirt and came down the hurricane steps.
"I'm going for a walk on the beach!" Micky called to his band mates.
"Ok, Mick." Davy replied.
Micky slowly walked to the place where he last saw Elizabeth. He looked up at the sky; the full moon was about to rise. Micky watched as it came higher and higher on the horizon.
"Elizabeth, I miss you so much." Micky thought to himself. "I hope you're thinking of me too."
"You've never left my thoughts, Micky." A voice said to him.
Micky spun to his left....and there was Elizabeth, dressed in a silver and gold dress. He stood open-mouthed at her.
"Cat got your tongue?" Elizabeth teased.
Micky smiled and engulfed her in a bear hug.
"Oof! Micky! Let me breath!" She gasped.
Micky just slightly released her. "You're back!" He shouted.
"Yes I am, and I've been keeping tabs on you four." She replied.
"And how're we doing?" Micky asked.
"Fine, you boys and doing fine." The angel answered, "The Lord is pleased with you."
"That's good to know." Micky smiled, "So where are you now?"
"In Chicago." Elizabeth replied, "All that wind makes it hard for an angel to fly, but I'm managing." She joked.
Micky chuckled. "What else is new?"
"I think you and the others will be pleased to hear that Dr. Chronos, or Tim as he wants to be called now, is coming along fine as well. He's resigned his position at U.L.A, destroyed his equipment and burned his notes. Just a few days ago, he sold all his possessions and joined a seminary in Oklahoma. He's thinking of becoming a priest."
"I'm glad to hear that." Micky said sincerely, "And I think the others will be too."
"I have other news I think you'll be glad to hear too." The angel said slyly.
"What? Tell me." Micky said.
"Well...I don't know..." Elizabeth teased again.
"Tell me or I'll tickle you." Micky threatened, putting his hands on her ribs.
Elizabeth giggled. "Ok, ok!" She said, then turned serious. "The Lord has granted my request to stay here."
It took a few seconds for Micky to absorb that. "You can stay here? In LA?"
Elizabeth nodded. "I'll still have my job to do, but I no longer have to roam the earth. There are plenty of people here who need my help. I'm getting an apartment only a few blocks from here."
Micky howled with happiness. He grabbed Elizabeth and swung her around.
"Micky! Put me down!" She yelled, "Don't you want to tell the others the good news?"
"You're right!" Micky exclaimed, "Let's go!" He took her hand and the two of them raced back to the pad to tell Mike, Peter and Davy.

THE END

Alternate section of Thy Kingdom Come.
By:  Lisa    Rated PG

After I originally wrote the above story, I began to think I could've done certain sections better.  Below is an alternate section that takes place between the signs.  The ending remains the same.

The Monkees and Elizabeth slowly climbed the Golgotha hill. Many other people did the same, including the three Marys and John. Many people were crying, others were saying Jesus deserved death for his blasphemy, while others were curious onlookers. Crucifixions were pretty common in Jerusalem. Nobody seemed to notice that the sky was turning a little dark, even though it was mid-day.........
"Pilate thought you might protest that sign, so he told me to tell you, 'What I have written, I have written'!
The priest glared at the centurion for a moment, then went back to his fellow priests. The centurion chuckled to himself, and then went back to his soldiers, who were casting lots for Jesus' tunic.
"He saved others; let him save himself if he is the chosen one, the messiah of God!"
The sky grew even darker, and the wind started to blow.
"Well guys....it’s finally over, our job is done." He said over the thunder.
Elizabeth looked up and saw what was happening. She got up and began to move towards her friends when a mob of frightened, hysterical people ran into her, knocking the angel down. Elizabeth was trampled by the mob and knocked unconscious. None of the people who had run her over looked back at her.

"It seems your angel friend isn’t so tough after all!” Dr. Chronos laughed.
"Elizabeth!" Mike shouted, but the angel did not move.

“Time to finish this.” Dr. Chronos said evilly. He pulled out his knife and started to walk towards Elizabeth.
The Monkees guessed his intentions and tried to break from their captors, but they were held too tight.
“No don’t, please!” Micky shouted at the scientist, “Kill me instead!”
Doctor Chronos looked back at Micky.
“Oh, I’m going to do that, don’t worry.” He chuckled. “But I going to do this first.”
Suddenly, Dr. Chronos slipped in the mud and went down hard, his knife flying out of his grip. Then, Mary of Magdalene and Mary the wife of Cleophas saw Elizabeth lying on the ground and ran over to her. They picked her up and carried over to where John was staying with the Mother of Jesus.
By the time Dr. Chronos was able to stand up, Elizabeth was being cared for by the two Marys. He could do nothing to her now. Doctor Chronos let out a scream of rage at the heavens, and then looked over at the crosses. Shaking with anger, he finally went back over to his henchmen.

Elizabeth woke up and saw a relieved Mary, the wife of Cleophas, looking down at her. The angel’s head was resting on Mary’s lap.
“You were knocked down pretty hard, Elizabeth.” Mary told her, “Are you injured?”
Elizabeth slowly sat up. A few feet from her Joseph was helping another man take down the body of Jesus. Joseph had a linen shroud in his arms. The nails were finally pulled from Jesus’ wrists and feet and Joseph gently took Jesus’ body in his arms, wrapped it up slightly, then reverently placed him in his mother’s arms. Mary kissed the face of her son and began to cry.
Elizabeth’s heart broke at the sorrowful scene. She turned away before she lost control and looked at the other Mary.
“I’m not injured, Mary.” Elizabeth said, then suddenly remembered that the Monkees had been taken away by Dr. Chronos and his fiends. “My husband! My friends!” She shouted, looking around. The soldiers had long left the area and the crowds were finally leaving the hill.
“I don’t see them anywhere, dear.” Mary replied, “They must have been carried away by the crowd. But don’t worry, I’m sure they will be looking for you.”
Elizabeth knew that wasn’t the case, but said nothing. She silently berated herself for letting her friends be captured. She had let them down, and now they were in terrible danger! Tears started to fall down her cheeks once again as she stood up.
“Where are you going?” Mary asked.
“I must look for my husband and friends!” Elizabeth exclaimed.
“No dear, stay with us.” Mary of Magdalene said to the angel. “After we bury Jesus, Joseph has a tomb nearby, you can come back to my home and I’m sure your husband and friends will come for you.”
But Elizabeth shook her head and wiped the tears from her face.
“Thank you, Mary.” Elizabeth said, “But I must look for them now!”
The angel turned to Mary, still holding the body of Jesus in her arms. She knelt down and kissed the hand of Jesus and that of his mother. Then bowing to the two Mary’s and John, she ran down Golgotha and back into the city. There were still many people about, so it took several minutes before Elizabeth finally found a place to be alone.
When she was alone, the angel put her hands together and disappeared.

So, finally, they came upon some hills and the nine of them walked up a short hill to a cave about halfway up. It looked like any other cave in the area, but if one looked closely, one would see the small solar panel/windmill hidden among the rocks and scrub. A wire from the device ran into the cave. Thus, Dr.

Then he and Mark took the ropes and tied the three Monkees' hands behind their backs, then tied their knees and their feet together as well. They were forced to sit against the wall. When they were secured, Davy was also obliged to take off his tunic and sandals as well.

But when Davy had taken his tunic and sandals off, he was dragged over to a rocky pillar on the other side of the tunnel. Davy was forced face-first against the pillar and his hands tied together on the other side of it. The pillar was wide and Davy’s arms just fit around on either side. Davy was unable to move at all.
“What are you going to do to him?“ Peter asked.
“You’ll see.“ Dr. Chronos smiled as he and his men went into another chamber to change their clothes.
While they were gone, the Monkees tried to get loose, but had little luck. Davy tried to move his bound hands back and forth against the rough pillar to free himself, but he was bound too tightly.
“I hope Elizabeth is ok.” Mike whispered to the others.
“Mary Magdalene will take care of her.” Micky whispered back, “But who’s going to take care of us?”
“Have faith, Micky.” Peter said quietly. “That’s all we can do.”
Soon enough, Dr. Chronos and his men came back into the main chamber. Each of them had something in their hands. As they approached the Monkees, they could see their captors had thick strands of electrical cord with them.

The doctor and his goons walked over to Davy, slowly winding the cords around their hands, leaving an end loose. It was now clear they were going to whip Davy.
“I’ll think we’ll start with you, little troublemaker.” Dr. Chronos growled.
“No, please!” Davy cried, then whispered, “Holy God, help me, come to my aid.”
Suddenly, visible only to the Monkees, Elizabeth appeared between Davy and his captors. She was dressed in a white gown, but no wings. Motioning for her friends to say silent, the angel quickly turned and stood directly behind Davy and hugged him, covering him with her body. Elizabeth whispered in his ear.
“Be still, and know that I am with you.” She said, then kissed the back of his head.
Davy smiled at the warmth of Elizabeth’s body. He was no longer afraid.
“Let’s give it to him!” The doctor said to his men.
The five men began whip Davy’s back, but because Elizabeth was behind him, shielding his body, he felt nothing. Elizabeth, in full angel mode, felt nothing either. It didn’t take long for Dr. Chronos and his men to realize that Davy was neither screaming in pain, nor were their whips leaving any marks on his body.
“Stop!” Dr. Chronos yelled. “That angel is here! She’s protecting him!” He and his men began to look around the tunnel.
“Show yourself, angel!” Dr. Chronos screamed.
Elizabeth turned from Davy and made herself visible to the doctor and his goons. Davy’s bonds dropped from his wrists.
“I’m right here, Dr. Chronos!” Elizabeth shouted angrily. “And you’ve done quite enough!”
The doctor and his men spun to face Elizabeth, but before they could do anything, the angel raised her hands and sent balls of purple energy slamming into the five of them. Doctor Chronos and his men were thrown into the air and landed hard on the ground several feet away towards the cave entrance. Stunned, the five men struggled to their feet, but Elizabeth walked toward them, fire in her eyes, and raised her hands again. This time bolts of white energy slammed into them, throwing them into the air out of the cave. They tumbled down the side of the hill and landed in a heap in the cold mud at the bottom.
The Monkees looked in awe at the angel.
“Remind me never to get you mad, Elizabeth.” Micky said.
Elizabeth smiled and touched Micky, Mike and Peter. Instantly the ropes fell off them and they were free. They stood up and all four Monkees gave Elizabeth a group hug.
“Thank you, Elizabeth.” Davy said, “You came just in time.”
The other three Monkees said the same.
“You’re welcome, boys.” Elizabeth replied. “I’m just sorry I let this happen to you.”
“It wasn’t your fault, Elizabeth.” Peter replied. “It could’ve happened to anyone.”
Everyone laughed at that, and the guys let go of Elizabeth. They found that they were no longer wet and cold. The angel waved her hand and the Monkees found themselves dressed in their tunics, cloaks and sandals.
“Now, let’s go see what’s happening to the good doctor.” Elizabeth with a satisfied smile.
The Monkees chuckled too, followed Elizabeth over to the cave entrance, and looked down the hill. They saw Dr. Chronos and his men lying immobile in the mud, unable to move.
“Doctor Chronos!” Elizabeth called down to him. “Think you and your men are ready for a talk, or would you like to lie in the mud for a few more hours?”
Mark, Henry, Larry and Ian shouted curses at her, but Dr. Chronos silenced them.
“We’ll talk, angel.” Dr. Chronos said, teeth chattering.
“Good! Come on up then.” Elizabeth replied.
The doctor and his goons found they could move once again and slowly stood up and walked up the hill and into the cave. The angel and the Monkees gave them a wide berth as they came inside. Elizabeth pointed at the ground and a campfire appeared. Doctor Chronos and his men quickly gathered around the fire to warm themselves up.
Elizabeth and the Monkees waited patiently until the five men had warmed up a little, then Elizabeth walked over.
“Sit down, all of you.” She said.
The doctor and his men obeyed, his assistants still glaring at the angel.
“What are you going to do with us, angel?” Dr. Chronos said bitterly.

“First of all, my name is Elizabeth, not ‘angel’ and what happens next depends on how this conversation goes.” Elizabeth replied. “Tell us why you think the Christian church killed your wife."
"I guess there's no harm in that." The doctor replied. "Many years ago, before your four helpers were even born, I was married to the most beautiful woman in the world.
Dr. Chronos looked darkly at the Monkees and Elizabeth.
"If she had stayed at home, she'd be alive today! Everybody was oh so sympathetic to me, saying how sorry they were that she died.
Everything was going fine, until you and your helpers showed up! I want someone to pay for what the Catholic Church did to me!" Dr. Chronos shouted. He started to get up, but Elizabeth raised her hand and he was forced back down.
Elizabeth shook her head. "You're a brilliant man, yet you've let hate and anger guide you and you've let yourself be deceived by Satan."
Doctor Chronos skidded away from the sight and backed himself against the wall of the tunnel, his eyes wide in utter terror at the site.
The Monkees gripped each other in terror. Never had they seen such a thing! Elizabeth came over and reassured them.
"You have nothing to fear from them, boys." The angel promised. "They were the ones who attacked me earlier before you found me on the beach. I beat them before and I'll do it again if I have to." She said, looking over at the hideous creatures.
What did...you do to them?" Doctor Chronos stammered.
"Satan....Satan killed you?" Dr. Chronos stammered.
"Yes, Tim." Rose answered, "For whatever reason, he made the driver jump the curb and kill me."
"No! No!! I don't believe it!" Dr. Chronos shouted, climbing to his feet. "He's been the one helping me with my plan!"

Suddenly, the ground beneath their feet trembled, the vibrations getting louder and stronger each second. Elizabeth, Rose and the Monkees huddled together.
“Earthquake!” Peter shouted.
“No, something much worse Peter.” Elizabeth said.
With a huge cracking sound the top of the hill that the cave was on was ripped off and the cave was exposed to the elements. The rain began to pour down on the inhabitants. Elizabeth and Rose stretched out their hands and protected the Monkees from the elements. Suddenly a man appeared in front of them, floating where the roof of the cave used to be. He was wearing a red suit with a black cloak. A ring of red fire surrounded him. He leaned on a walking stick with a skull at the top as if he was standing on solid ground.
"Yes and it was a very good plan, too, if I might say so myself." The man said. It was Mr. Zero, better known as Satan. The four demons bowed to the ground at their master.
Twice. First, you failed to stop the angel Elizabeth, then you didn't prevent her and her friends from foiling my plans." He sighed.
"He's right, Rose and Elizabeth. " Dr.
They were barely able to deflect it. Satan raised his hands and another fireball appeared between them, ready to be launched at the weakened angels.
"I said stay out of this!" Satan shouted, "Before I..."
Satan got no further, because the four Monkees tackled him, knocked him down and began to punch him. Satan waved his hand and the Monkees flew off of him and landed several feet away, stunned. He stood up and brushed himself off.
"I'll deal with you four later." Satan thundered, then turned to see Dr. Chronos kneeling down, looking up into heaven.
"Lord God, I'm sorry!" Dr. Chronos sobbed, "I'm so sorry for what I've done and what I tried to do! Please, please forgive me!"
Rose and Elizabeth glowed brightly for a moment, then walked over to the sobbing man.
"And we'll be around to stop you, evil one." Rose replied.
"Its time to go back to our own time now." Elizabeth said, "But first, I must take care of something." Smashing, breaking sounds were heard for several seconds.
"What did you do?" Micky asked.
"I caused the cave walls of the chambers behind us to collapse." Elizabeth replied, "So nobody will know what happened here."
"Let's join hands and concentrate on getting back to the twentieth century." Rose said.
Everybody formed a circle and joined hands. "Concentrate on your home." Elizabeth said to the Monkees. Suddenly, it was quiet and dark. Within a few seconds, they were standing in the living room of the Monkees' pad. The guys helped Rose and Elizabeth sit down on the couch.
"Finally." Mike said softly. "Safe and sound."

The rest of the story continues as usual with everyone back at the pad.
