The Glenwood Public Library Update

(as submitted to the 04/29/04
edition of the Glenwood Herald)

Thanks to Diana Plyler and other dedicated recyclers the Glenwood Library will be receiving
a $44.20 check early in May. Those inkjet and laser printer cartridges you donate to the library’s
fundraiser really do make a difference. The first check, for $38.00, was used to purchase a tall, sturdy
bookshelf from the new MaddOx store, located in the old Baker’s grocery store building.
Please help me thank Mr. and Mrs. Maddox for helping the library with the purchase.
Volunteer Evette Johnson gave me the idea for looking for a bookcase. While bringing
the science fiction books into a semblance of order one day she remarked, “Gee, it sure would be
nice if we had a taller bookshelf right here.” Her wish was my command and now all the science fiction
books can be shelved in the same area! This allowed me to move all the adult fiction over several shelves.
Now we have room to put paperback copies of popular books on the shelves with the author’s hardback books.

Another stride forward for our library was accomplished by Susan Lantz. She spent many volunteer
hours entering patron names and library card numbers into an Excel database. Thank you, Susan!
Now if we could just get a working card catalog…I have given up on the Southwest Region ever finding
a librarian to work in Hope. We may never see the online catalog we are supposed to have.
Sammie Benjamin, the Centerpoint High librarian, has allowed me to watch as they automate the high
school library. Learning about the system they are using will help me choose one when we have the opportunity
to get one. I just need to apply for a grant and get some money. Doesn’t it always come down to money?
As you know, our Pike County libraries really operate on a shoestring. The Pike County library
tax is 1/3 of a mil. Three libraries split 3 cents of every $1,000 in tax money collected. Someday we really
need to ask for more money. Don’t you like having a library so you don’t have to purchase expensive reference
books when you want to find out what kind of snake almost bit you or what that pretty wildflower growing on the
roadside is? If your computer has to go to the shop isn’t it great to know you can keep in touch with friends
or do your taxes online with the library’s free public use computers?

I was able to purchase for the library Miss Julia Meets Her Match by Ann B. Ross.
(This is my contribution in memory of the lovely Ms. Jean Ligon. She, after all, introduced me to Miss Julia!)
This latest installment in the life and times of this funny southern “church lady” is as good as the first one.
I have enjoyed all the books but thought the first one was the best. While the rabid Miss Julia fans
at the library read this book you can check out the first four so you can better appreciate this one.

The library website has a new “book-reading baby” picture. Sherry Stokes, another dedicated
volunteer, shared a cute photo of her grandson Nathan. Give Gunner, her new grandbaby, a few years
and he, also, will be reading books! Bring by your cute pictures of children with books and I will do my
best to put them on the website.
Check it out at http://home.earthlink.net/~glenwoodarlibrary71943/GlenPubLib.html.
Remember, checking out books, music and computer CD’s, audio books and videotapes is free.
Just think, your tax dollars really accomplish good things in our community.
The library is located at 210 2nd St., in the Glenwood City Hall building.
(Thank you, Glenwood, for giving us a home!) The hours are 12:00 noon – 5:00 PM, Monday - Friday.
