obituary from The Charlotte News, August 24, 1905

William N. Alexander was born in March of 1828.1 He married Sarah Loucinda (Lou) White on October 29, 1855.2 She was born on December 26, 1834.3 In 1862 he enlisted in the cavalry as a private with James and Smith. At that time he was a farmer.4 In 1863 William was named as an heir of his uncle, Silas Alexander Jr., inheriting 25 acres of land and purchasing the undivided interest of Silas's son Harrison.5 He suffered a gunshot wound and was hospitalized in Danville, Virginia, in June 1864. He was hospitalized in Charlotte with typhoid the following November, and returned to duty in January 1865.6 In 1871 he was elected a deacon of Sharon Church.7

William served as Mecklenburg County coroner and as Deputy Marshal during the 1880's.8a

William died August 21, 1905, and was buried at Carmel Cemetery in Mecklenburg County.8b Mrs. Lou Alexander, age 83, widow of W.N., applied for a Confederate widow's pension from the state of North Carolina in July 1917 in Mecklenburg County.9 She died on August 24, 1921. They had children named Marcus A., Ellis Ulysses, and Robert Lester.10

Lou appears in the 1910 census in the Sharon community as a farmer and head of household. Her son Robert Lester lives with her, and in the 1920 census, they still share a household, along with R. L.'s wife Cynthia and their small daughter.11

William's middle name may have been Newton, as a William Newton Alexander appears in the records of Sharon Church around 1847 as a communicant, after William had joined the church.12
