Slaves of Hezekiah Alexander

Mecklenburg County, North Carolina

Sam, apparently a field hand, was given to Hezekiah's wife, Mary, in his will. (Will of Hezekiah Alexander, Mecklenburg County Will Book A, p. 20.)

Abram, apparently a field hand, was given to Hezekiah's wife, Mary, in his will. (Will, cited above.)

Jack became the property of William Sample Alexander at Hezekiah's death. (Will, cited above.)

Mary was sold by James Ranklin Alexander to John Parks before Hezekiah's death. (Will, cited above.)

Ann became the property of Silas Alexander at Hezekiah's death. (Will, cited above.)

Jean and her three children, plus her future children, became the property of Esther Alexander Garrison at Hezekiah's death.

        Sarah, child of Jean.

        Frank, child of Jean.

Nancy, child of Jean. (Will, cited above.)

Hannah became the property of Keziah Alexander at Hezekiah's death. (Will, cited above.)

Nance is listed in the inventory of the estate of Hezekiah Alexander in 1801, as a child valued at $150. She became the property of Mary Alexander Polk at her marriage, and the 1797 codicil of Hezekiah's will, written when Mary was deceased, makes her the legal property of Mary's husband, Charles Polk. (Will, cited above, and Inventory of the Estate of Hezekiah Alexander, 1801, Mecklenburg County, North Carolina.)

Rachel is listed in the Inventory, cited above, a child valued at $130.

An unnamed girl is listed in the Inventory, cited above--apparently part of a debt owed to Hugh Alexander. She was bought at a vendor April 4, 1799, for $301.

Bet was a woman given to Hezekiah's wife Mary in his will, then to Joel Alexander in Mary Sample Alexander's will, which was probated in October of 1805. (Will of Mary Alexander, Mecklenburg County Will Book A, p. 47.)

Jenny, born 5 September, 1803, was the daughter of Bet, and was given to Kezia Alexander in Mary Sample Alexander's will, as above, at the age of two.
