Mary Steele Alexander, the youngest of Telemachus and Hannah's children, was born in June of 1837.1 In 1860, she was one of five siblings still living on the family farm. She and brothers John S., S. Washington, and U. C., as well as Martha Sample, were living on a property still valued at $500.2 On January 9, 1868, Mary married William H. Martin, at the home of her sister, Mrs. Martha Sample. Her husband's parents were W. C. and Hannah Martin.3 Mary was 30 years old when she got married. After the war it was apparently not unusual for first-time brides to be past their teens and twenties. Her sister Martha also married at age 30, before the war, while their sisters and sisters-in-law were brides in their twenties. Mary's brothers also married while in their twenties, with the exception of the twins, who married after the war, in their forties, and Oswald, who married at 32 to a 30-year-old war widow.
