From Mecklenburg to Moore: Four North Carolina Families

Resignation Letter of a Civil War Officer

signature of S. W. Alexander, 2nd Lt, Co. B, 13th rgt.

To General Cooper, Adjutant General1
Confederate States of America
Gen. * C*
I have the sorrow
to tender my resignation as Senior Second
Lieut. in Company B 13th Regiment North
Carolina Troops. I am compelled thus
to act in consequence of continued
ill health. The Capt. of this Company
was wounded at Williamsburg, and
since that time the command of it
has devolved upon me, and to such
an extent has my health become
impaired, that it is often impossible
for me to attend to my duties as they
should be, hence it is that I tender
my resignation. Hoping the above will
meet with your approval2 & that my resignation
may be made to take effect on 23 Sept. 62. I remain
Your obt Servt
S. W. Alexander
2nd Lieut. Co. B 13th NCT3
