We take basic education for granted. The people of Cite Soleil do not. Without the assistance of efforts such as that of HOM, opportunities for the children of the area to go to school, learn, and grow up to help improve their country and world would be very rare. There is no system of free public education. In many areas sponsored schools are the only chance a child has for breaking out of the poverty cycle and becoming a more productive citizen of Haiti. $260/yr helps send this boy to school, pay for his uniforms, daytime food, and school materials. The primary school began in 1989 and has grown to include (as of 12/02) 367 students in grades pre-K through 6, plus 107 others who attend secondary school under the sponsorship of HOM. Students at the primary school are taught from a curriculum that focuses on academic fundamentals and Christian teaching. The school at Ibo Beach/Source Matelas, with 217 students enrolled as of 12/02, has been operating for several years, but has only come under the HOM umbrella during the past year. As each of its children are sponsored the additional resources will support better academic staff training and better material resources.
Brginning in September 2003 a new school will be initiated at the Blanchard (Terre Noire) community church.

HOM has found that many children were starting the day without breakfast or other nourishment. This effected their health and ability to focus on school. To help them better achieve and improve their health, a supplemental nourishment program has been initiated. It provides a breakfast snack and vitamins to the students. Approximately 60 cents per day per child - $220 day for the school - fully funds this effort. HOM seeks individuals, groups, and businesses who would like to underwrite a day, week, or longer of this supplemental feeding program. An immediate goal is to broaden the breakfast nutrition program with fresh fruit (14 cents per day per child!).

Sponsors may select a child at the primary school (pre-K through grade 6) to sponsor. They receive periodic updates on the student's status, including notes from the student and are kept abreast of HOM developments through the HOM newsletter. At the end of the 6 year primary education HOM students take the national secondary placement exam. Those who pass (100% of the students in the 2001 & 2002 classes) are placed in private or state secondary schools. Sponsors are asked to consider continuing their support through this second tier. Since secondary school is twice as expensive, sponsors may wish to increase the amount they provide.
