Gas Tank OrTekstra

Gas Tank Orchestra laptop remix by GTO members Matthew Rosenbeck and Gregory Wildes.

Gas Tank Orchestra was founded in New Orleans in the early ‘90s by Gregory Wildes and features a wide range of instruments including strings, reeds, horns, and percussion, all constructed with automobile gas tanks scavenged from illegal street dumps in New Orleans Ninth Ward neighborhood. The gas tanks provide intriguing acoustic and histo-socio-economic resonance for an orchestra improvising with improvised instruments; and it’s nice to get some more mileage out of old junk.

After a five year hiatus, Gas Tank Orchestra recently reunited for two “rusty, muddy and semi-retired” shows in New Orleans. GTO’s last performance prior to the reunion was in July of ‘01 at the Pori International Jazz Festival in Finland, with Gregory relocating to NYC that fall. During their extended break Matthew and Gregory have been exploring the digital realm and honing their skills. Gregory has produced a sample library of the gas tank instruments for Big Fish Audio and is developing a gamepad to midi controller interface via Max/MSP.

Matthew’s visit to NYC provides opportunity for yet another reunion of sorts where he and Gregory will collaborate for a DJ set featuring material sampled from their recent shows and who knows what else.

Past Performances:

8/13/05 - 8/24/05 You Again, a Musical about Cloning at the New York International Fringe Festival, The Village Theatre (158 Bleecker Street b/w Sullivan & Thompson), see below for showtimes:

Dear Friends,

We are excited to announce the premiere of You Again: a Musical about Cloning from award-winning writer Bill Gullo and New Orleans composer, Rob Wagner. The show is being presented during the New York International Fringe Festival, which runs from August 12-28th in New York City. The production will feature the dynamic choreography of Warren Carlyle, Associate Choreographer for The Producers on Broadway.

You Again is a straight-faced musical comedy that tells the tale of a substitute teacher who uncovers a sad scientist¹s desperate plan to clone the student population in the school¹s basement. Against this peculiar backdrop, Gullo¹s book and lyrics reveal a classic tale: an orphaned son searches for a home, a distraught madman challenges his Creator, and an impossible love survives. You Again promises to satisfy long-time musical theater fans as well as other newcomers to the genre with Wagner¹s collection of truly original songs that meet somewhere between Randy Newman and Magnetic Fields.

Writer/Director Bill Gullo was a quarter-finalist for the prestigious Nicholl Fellowship in screenwriting and made his directorial debut with the film One Year Down, currently traveling the film festival circuit. Composer Rob Wagner, a recipient of the Big Easy'Best Emerging Artist¹ award, is a principle member of and composer for the Rob Wagner Trio and the internationally-acclaimed New Orleans Klezmer Allstars. Sound design by Gregory Wildes.

You Again will be presented at The Village Theatre
(158 Bleecker Street b/w Sullivan & Thompson). Showtimes include:
Saturday, August 13, 2:45 p.m.
Monday, August 15, 10:30 p.m.
Wednesday, August 17, 5:00 p.m.
Saturday, August 20, 9:45 p.m.
Wednesday, August 24, 2:00 p.m.

Tickets are $15 and are ON SALE NOW via the Fringe Festival website:
www.FringeNYC.org. After July 30, you may purchase tickets by phone: In New York: (212) 279-4488 or Outside New York: 1-888-FringeNYC.

Be sure to check out our website for show updates and an odd image or two:

We hope to see you at one of our upcoming shows. We guarantee You Again will be the best musical about cloning you¹ve ever seen!

Sincerely,
Bill Gullo, Michelle Coe, and Jason Lehmberg,

MAKING WAVES
2004, 64 minutes, DVD. NEW YORK THEATRICAL PREMIERE!
What do a public access TV personality, an electronics engineer, a Vietnam vet, a libertarian Congressional candidate, and a retired millionaire have in common? They're all operating unlicensed, low-power, "pirate" radio stations in Tucson, Arizona. MAKING WAVES follows their uphill struggle to be heard on our publicly-owned but corporate-controlled airwaves.

Special Performances:

-THE DUST DIVE
The Dust Dive employs Magnus chord organ, violin, samples, ambient field recordings, guitar, and three vocalists to create unusual sound-visions that have been described as "urban pastoral," "ghostly," "mesmerizing," "bittersweet," "psychedelic," and quirkily sincere "like a youth recital."

-RADIO 4X4: MATT MIKAS + TOM ROE + TIANNA KENNEDY + GREGORY WILDES
Four simultaneous audio performances are separately transmitted through FM transmitters to radios positioned throughout the Anthology theater. Each radio receives only one of the signals, so that the audience becomes an active collaborator in the performance, "mixing" the audio feeds by moving about the space among the four signals. This performance will occur as audiences enter the theater before the film.

This evening is presented by free103point9. Screening and performance audio will be streamed live on free103point9 Online Radio, http://www.free103point9.org/

NITA AND ZITA

Join us for a glittery, multidisciplinary biography of "international
dancers" Nita and Zita. The sisters emigrated from Romania in the 1920s and
became legends among the eccentrics and outsiders that make up New Orleans'
mystique. Nita & Zita recreates their oddly charming, idiosyncratic mix of
burlesque, contortionism, and pure visual fantasy. Questioning what is truth
and what is myth, this surreal cabaret searches for what matters in the
personal quest for artistic freedom. Performed by Katie Pearl and Kathy
Randels. With live piano jazz score performed by Tom McDermott, video by
Maria Cataldo, sets by Shawn Hall, DJ Mix by Greg Wildes and costumes by
Olivia Wildz. Nita and Zita toured here for one weekend in 2003 and won a
VILLAGE VOICE OBIE AWARD. This time, we are here for two weekends, 11
shows. The Nita and Zita team has been consumed by and inspired by these
sisters for more than three years now, and we WANT EVERYONE TO KNOW ABOUT
THEM. Please come.

Anxious Sound Presents:

Improvised music by Cambre, Landsnes & Wildes...

Featuring:
Greg Wildes - (alto saxophone, trumpet, sousaphone, more???)
Endre Landsnes - (drumkit)
Rob Cambre - (guitar, alto saxophone, kalimba)

The number 3 has always held mystical significance, some would say magic -
triangles, the holy trinity, power trios, ménage a tr... well, you get the
idea...  We will attempt to stretch these metaphors and ourselves in this
Wednesday concert.  Each musician brings quite different experiences to the
table:

Greg Wildes is the creator of the Gas Tank Orchestra, an ensemble consisting
of his self-designed and built instruments made from discarded gas tanks.
Greg is also a multi-instrumentalist with great ensemble skills and big
ears.  He has performed/recorded with Toshi Makihara, Peter Kowald, Bhob
Rainey, Carl Smith, Mike Khoury, and Brent Gutzeit among others....see =
http://home.earthlink.net/~gjwildes/welcome.htm

Endre Landsnes hails from Norway, where he was a key participant in the
fertile Stavanger scene - playing and recording with a number of rock and
jazz artists.  Most notable is his association with saxophonist Frode
Gjerstad and the Circulasione Totale Orchestra, which yielded the "Aurora
Borealis" CD (Cadence Jazz Records)...Since 1999 he has played with yours
truly in the CALA DUO...

Rob Cambre....well if yr on this mailing list you know who i am..
I just work the six strings/stompboxes/amp as best as i can and for this
night I'll even blast some saxophone with Mr.. Wildes...At various times I
have been lucky enough to rock it with Paul Lovens, Eugene Chadbourne, Davey
Williams, Peter Kowald, Dave Cappello, Kidd Jordan, Daniel Carter, Andrew
Barker and many others....bless you all for indulging me
