Gas Tank Orchestra features a wide range of instruments including strings, reeds, horns, and percussion, all constructed with discarded automobile gas tanks from the streets of New Orleans by Artist/Musician/Scientist Gregory John Wildes. GTO is an orchestra improvising with improvised instruments.
The musicians (Gregory John Wildes, Kathleen Kraus, Dana Cross, Mathew Rosenbeck, Pir Hervey, and Bunny) switch instruments for every piece, discovering how to play each instrument and how each relates to the others. The interaction between the players and instruments is of dual importance.
The orchestra is self-arranging as it explores the balance (between chaos and epiphany, between conscious and unconscious, between left-brain and right-brain, between this, that, and so on) in staying/changing together.
GTO is a way to "figure it out”. It is the music of learning to learn to play together together.
More than mere ear candy, a psycho-acoustic feast for the mind and body… and soul!
“…songs that range from avant-garde percussion to hypnotic, trance inducing melodies. GTO has the strong pulsing rhythms of traditional drumming intertwined with the intriguing dimensions of Sun Ra. The great city of New Orleans and it’s complex culture of French Quarter decadence and 9th ward decline combine inside electric scrap metal that billows rhythmic melodies that personify the district in which they were born.” -Chris Chandler
