For a change-of-pace, Dave took six-week's leave from Goldstone Deep Space Network (DSN) Tracking Station to do some logging in Oregon's John Day country near Long Creek- 1979.

This dish, or radio telescope, can communicate with 25 watt robotic spacecraft to beyond our Solar System. At this distance the X-band signal power received is about a billionth of a trillionth of a watt.

Located on the edge of Fort Irwin (The Army'sNational Training Center), this DSN 70 meter dish antenna is America’s premier spacecraft communications tool.

Named after an abandoned mining town 40 miles north of Barstow, NASA's "Goldstone" tracking station, along with like dish antenna complex's near Madrid Spain & Canberra Australia, provide global communication with planetary robotic spacecraft.

Dave/Hybrid at DC Dave & Rila told hundreds of people about their Honda hybrid gas-electric at stops between NYC & DC. They followed a variety of vehicles competing for "minimum environmental impact" over a 7 day *Tour de Sol*.

This “telephoto” suggests the Capitol was much nearer; -- actually it was several blocks away.

Rila (in red) met & "people-talked" to many reporters, students, teachers, visitors, dignitaries & locals along the ‘2000 “Tour de Sol” route.

This “total electric” School bus & many other solar, electric & specialty vehicles of Industry, College & Hi School teams also competed in this “green” tour from NYC to Washington DC.

Rila also became quite adept in explaining the gas-electric Honda.

Our nation's capitol can be seen in the background.

This was at the end of a 7-day "Tour de Sol" from NYC to Washington DC.

Sometimes it snows in Barstow!

Dave & Rila took this Chinook on vacation to New England during Sept-Oct of 2002. They caravaned in RV's with brother George (& Marca), & cousin John (Telford) Stone (& JoAnn).

On other trips they take their Honda Insight hybrid car on the tow-dolly here seen attached behind the Chinook.

Barstow Sun-n-snow
Near the end of Sept. 2002, Dave & Rila went east on vacation to New England.

They met, near Chicago, then caravaned in RV's with brother George(& Marca), & cousin John (Telford)(& JoAnn) Stone.

The weather was very co-operative. One of our first major stops was at Niagra Falls.

fall colors This was taken in Vermont. We then continued to New Hampshire, Maine, briefly into Canada to Pres. Roosevelts summer cottage(boyhood home & later his Pres. hide-away), also to Massachusetts(Martha's Vineyard etc.).

This Vermont fall scene was captured with Dave's 1 meg-pixel HP c200 camera. The colors were gorgeous & we saw places like Boston & Lexington & many lighthouses --etc.
