1 -- (Country Opery)
(-Near Girdner, MO)
Vacationed at Ozark, Missouri where Howard (Dave's 1949 schoolmate at 'Red' Oak Creek School, Cornville AZ) and Roxanne Self live. We attended their Country Opery at nearby Oldfield where Howard (at left in cowboy hat) performs with his small band every week. There was no fee and it was an all volunteer community project, and it was filled with mostly old people like us. A couple of youngsters did some clogging & Rila especially enjoyed this. (Glen Dale Robertson, the fellow in the center of pic playing the banjo, became a Christian at the Girdner church during his youth when he lived at Girdner Missouri.). (This photo shows only part of the Band members)

Girdner MO is on the map! 2 -- Girdner Missouri

This is Leon Potter who works for the Missouri Dept. of Transportation and was involved in getting two Girdner signs put up on theis road at each end of this small community. With these signs, Girdner is again on the map! There are only about 6 people who live here now(Sept. 2003), with a couple buildings vacant. Leon & his wife are Girdner residents and live next to the church & he is the Sunday School Leader.

3 -- Girdner Church

Sunday September 21, 2003; Attended the Girdner church in Girdner, Missouri, south of Ava, near Squires. The feature scripture was "II Chron 7:14", the same one on continuous display at the Girdner Church foyer on Dave's grandparent's ranch in Arizona in the 1930's. The "quite old" interior of the church was quaint and the same as remembered at the "Girdner Gathering" in 1986, whereas the exterier has been redone. Leon Potter & Dave Girdner, 9-21'03.

Leon's Uncle Burney Porter was a stone craftsman & hand-chiseled this first gravestone in the Girdner Cemetery adjoining the church. Remnants of the Uncle's orchard may be seen in the background.

This stone has a relatively long epitaph chiseled onto it, and it is still dimly readable.
The gravestone base or "toes" was chiseled from a second rock.

5 -- Black Oak Trees Grafted Together

Leon Potter's late Uncle also did some interesting tree graftings & Leon showed us two of these at this little community of Girdner Missouri. Notice in the photo that the upper trunk is larger than either lower trunk, indicating the tree grows faster by this method.
Leon picked a paw-paw for us & we let it ripen a few days then shared it with Dave's brother George & wife Marca when we met them next in Chanute Kansas. For information on pawpaws, go to: http://pawpaw.tv/

Girdner Post Office 6 -- "Girdner Post Office"

This building housed the Post Office at Girdner Missouri from 1900 to 1903. Remnants of the building for the previous Girdner Post Office(--from about 1887 to 1900) was also close by, as well as a Girdner market, all right near the Girdner Church.

7 -- Near Girdner Post Office Before 1900

The left building in this photo is now vacant (Sept. 2003).

Prior to 1900 the Girdner Post Office and a Girdner market were housed in a building which was to the right of this photo and which is now gone.
