J OHN SPITTLE, at present the earliest Spittle ancestor known with certainty, was born around 1724, probably in Wednesbury, Staffordshire, England. The name of Spittle goes far back in the parish records of St. Bartholomew, Wednesbury, which may yet yield more of the line.
On 5 November 1747, John married SARAH ASTON, born about 1722, and together, appeared to have lived all their days in Wednesbury. John died 23 June 1796, aged 72 years, but was preceded in death by his wife, Sarah, who died 22 June 1786. Their monument is inscribed with a loving sentiment from John.
Sacred to the
Memory of Sarah Spittle, Wife of
John Spittle, who departed this
life June the 22nd 1786:
aged 64 years

A mother who with every Grace was blest,
with all the ornaments of Virtue drest,
With whatsoever Religion recommends
The best of wives, of mothers, and of Friends.

Also of John Spittle,
who died June 23rd 1796,
Aged 72

If one accepts the accuracy of John's age at death, then he is most likely the son of John Spittle and Ann Bassett baptised at St. Bart's 2 February 1725. A circumstantial difficulty arises from the fact that another John, son of a John Spittle and Sarah Bromwich, was batpised at the same place 22 November 1727. One of these is likely the John Spittle who married Jane Holden at All Saints, West Bromwich 29 August 1745 and the other is the John Spittle who married Sarah Aston.
John, Mary and Jane, children of John and Jane Spittle, were baptised at St. Bart's in 1749, 1750 and 1753 respectively. Burials recorded at Wednesbury for children of John and Jane were Susannah in 1747, Richard in 1748 and John in 1749. Jane was buried in 1754. This family fits with the John and Jane married at West Bromwich.
It would be tempting to assume that the elder John, baptised in 1725, married first (1745) and the younger John second (1747), but one could also argue that the elder John was closer in age to the older Sarah Aston and therefore more likely to be her spouse. Of course, this would have made the younger John right about 18 for an 1845 marriage - not usual, but not unusual either. And there are name games to be played too with Robert and Richard. Without more direct evidence than that available in the parish records, none of these is a safe assumption in the effort to extend John's line.
Children of John Spittle and Sarah Aston :
  1. JOHN SPITTLE, baptised 4 June 1748, at the parish church of St. Bartholomew, Wednesbury, Staffordshire. The parish register at Wednesbury records a marriage between John Spittle and Sarah Smith 20 June 1768.

  2. ELIZABETH SPITTLE, baptised 29 September 1750, at the parish church of St. Bartholomew, Wednesbury, Staffordshire.

  3. HENRY SPITTLE, baptised 3 October 1752, at the parish church of St. Bartholomew, Wednesbury, Staffordshire.

  4. DANIEL SPITTLE was baptised 16 November 1754, married Jane Jackson 18 November 1776 and was buried 6 September 1825, aged 71 years, each at the parish church of St. Bartholomew, Wednesbury, Staffordshire. Jane was killed at Walsall Races in 1803 and buried at Wednesbury, St. Bart's.

  6. SOLOMON SPITTLE, baptised 29 January 1759, at the parish church of St. Bartholomew, Wednesbury, Staffordshire.

  7. CHILD SPITTLE ?, born about 1761 but there is no baptismal record for a child of John and Sarah at Wednesbury at that time. A Robert Spittle aged 69 years was buried at Wednesbury 14 February 1832. Edward named one of his sons Robert. However, there was a Robert Spittle, son of Samuel and Sarah, baptized at Wednesbury in 1762.

  8. EDWARD SPITTLE was baptised 23 May 1763, at the parish church of St. Bartholomew, Wednesbury, Staffordshire. He married MARY ATTWOOD at Rowley Regis, 14 January 1783. Edward was a cattle dealer and butcher and died 28 January 1832.

  9. JONAH SPITTLE was baptised 28 May 1765, at the parish church of St. Bartholomew, Wednesbury, Staffordshire. He married Eleanor Brighton 10 October 1786. Jonah was listed as the proprietor of the Blue Ball, Hall End, Wednesbury in the 1830-31 Staffordshire directory (Inns, Taverns & Public Houses). In the 1839 directory he was listed as a Retail Brewer, on Church St., Wednesbury. Jonah and his Blue Ball (Old Spittle's) were center stage in The Balad of Wedgebury Cockin' - about the infamous cock-fighting scene in pre-Victorian Wednesbury. Wedgebury, or Wedgbury, was a frequent colloquialism for Wednesbury.

      Children:   SARAH, born c. 1787;   WILLIAM, born c. 1789;   JOSEPH, born c. 1791;   ANN, born c. 1794;   BENJAMIN, born c. 1797;   JOHN, born c. 1799;   SAMUEL, born c. 1802;   GEORGE, born c. 1805;   MARY, born c. 1809.

Their baptisms are to be found in the parish records of St. Bartholomew's. Jonah died 3 January 1844, and his will, dated 13 September 1842, lists children: Sarah Partridge, William Spittle, Joseph Spittle, Ann Thursfield, Benjamin Spittle, John Spittle, and a son-in-law John Dudley. Mary had married John Dudley 3 February 1833 at Wednesbury St. Bart's, but had died before her father made his will in 1842.

Last Will & Testament
of Edward Spittle
E DWARD SPITTLE, the son of John Spittle and Sarah Aston, was baptised 23 May 1763 at St. Bartholomew's parish church, Wednesbury, Staffordshire, England. Edward was a Butcher and Cattle Dealer, and married, by license, MARY ATTWOOD the 14th of January 1783 at Rowley Regis, Staffordshire. It is uncertain whether Edward was the first butcher in the family, but three of his sons are known to have been butchers also. He died 28 January 1832 at age 68 years and was buried 3 February 1832 at the parish church in Wednesbury. He made his will on 25 May 1825 and left property in the parishes of Wednesbury, West Bromwich and elsewhere first to his wife Mary and after her death to his children.
Children of Edward Spittle and Mary Attwood :
  1. JOHN SPITTLE, baptised at Rowley Regis, Staffordshire, England on 23 February 1783. Stated in his father's will (1832) to be a butcher living in West Bromwich. An infant son Edward was buried at Wednesbury 20 January 1828.

  2. ESTHER SPITTLE, was baptised at Halesowen on 17 July 1785, the daughter of an Edmund (sic) and Mary Spittle. Circumstantial evidence points to Esther being the daughter of Edward and Mary. This child died 7 May 1787.

  3. EDWARD SPITTLE, is listed as the second son in his father's will but no baptismal record has yet been found. He died 19 May 1848. His will shows him a Victualler of West Bromwich, and apparently he had no children, for after his wife, Elizabeth, his legatees were nieces and nephews: to nephew William Spittle, son of my brother Robert Spittle, Butcher, of Wednesbury, property at Sutton Coldfield; to niece Mary Ann Bayley, daughter of Thomas Bayley of Wednesbury, two places on Spon Lane, West Bromwich; also to Mary Ann Bayley, Elizabeth Bayley and Rebecca Peters, daughters of Thomas Bayley ...

  4. JAMES SPITTLE, baptised at Rowley Regis, Staffordshire, England on 3 October 1790. A marriage, by license, was recorded at West Bromwich 9 November 1812 between a James Spittle, of West Bromwich, and a Mary Constable, of Wednesbury; witnesses were Ann Spittle and Moses Turner. The 1841 census records a James Spittle, butcher, age 50, his wife Mary, 57 and their children: Henry, 26, Edward, 24, Jane, 22 and Mary Ann, 17. James Spittle, widower, age 60, retired butcher, born Wednesbury, was listed as head of household at 54 Probtor Place, West Bromwich on the 1851 census. His son Edward, age 33, butcher, born West Bromwich was with him. Again on the 1861 census, James, age 70, and his son Edward, age 42, were listed together at Probtor Cottages, West Bromwich. James was occupied as "Proprietor of Houses." Burial records for Christ Church, West Bromwich, for 6 August 1862 list a James Spittle age 72 of High Street.

  5. JOSEPH SPITTLE, baptised at Rowley Regis, Staffordshire, England on 4 November 1792. Joseph is listed as both butcher and maltster on King St., Darlaston in the Staffordshire directory of 1830-31. He is also said to be a Butcher, of Darlaston, in his father's will of 1832. On an earlier directory Joseph was shown as the proprieter of the "Waggon & Horses", King St., Darlaston, but by 1830 it had changed hands. The Joseph Spittle in the directories could instead be the son of Edward's brother Jonah.

  6. ROBERT SPITTLE, was baptised at St Bartholomew's, Wednesbury, Staffordshire, England on 4 January 1795. His wife's name was Martha and baptism for their children Amelia, William, Mary, and Robert were registered at St Bartholomew's between 1818 and 1827. Robert is listed as a butcher (& skinner) on New St., Wednesbury in the Staffordshire directories of 1830-31 and 1839. Living with his daughter and son-in-law Amelia and Thomas Partridge in West Bromwich at the time of the 1861 and 1871 censuses in which he was listed as a retired butcher, aged 65 in 1861 and 77 in 1871. During the 1881 census Robert, widowed and age 86, was listed as Father-In-Law in the Walsall household of Thomas and Mary Disturnal.

Children:   AMELIA was baptised at St Bartholomew's, Wednesbury, Staffordshire, England on 8 November 1818 and married Thomas Partridge;   WILLIAM was baptised at St Bartholomew's, Wednesbury, Staffordshire, England on 12 November 1820;   MARY was baptised at St Bartholomew's, Wednesbury, Staffordshire, England on 22 February 1824 and married Thomas Disturnal;   ROBERT was baptised at St Bartholomew's, Wednesbury, Staffordshire, England on 2 December 1827.

  10. ELIZABETH SPITTLE, was baptised at St Bartholomew's, Wednesbury, Staffordshire, England on 6 May 1807. Elizabeth was married at Handsworth to Thomas Gittoes on 21 October 1825; witnessed by James and Mary Stokes. In West Bromwich, 1861. On the 1891 census, an 83 year old Elizabeth was listed with her widowed daughter Martha S. Bridge at 1 Thynne St., West Bromwich.

      Children:   EDWARD, born c. 1826;   MARY, born c. 1829;   ELIZABETH, born c. 1833;   SARAH, born c. 1835;   JANE, born c. 1837;   CHARLOTTE, born c. 1839;   MARTHA SPITTLE, born c. 1842;   JOHN SPITTLE, born c. 1844;   THOMAS H., born c. 1847;   LOUISA, born c. 1850.

A NN SPITTLE, otherwise known as Nancy, was born 11 March 1797 and baptised at St Bartholomew's, Wednesbury, Staffordshire, England on 26 March 1797. She married RICHARD DAVIS, a Tailor, 24 November 1817 at St Peter and St Paul's, Aston, Juxta Birmingham. It has been said in the family that she died by drowning in the canal after being entangled in the tow ropes of two boats. Her death certificate confirms this, stating that she was found dead in the Birmingham Canal 29 October 1851 at the age of 54 years.
