T HOMAS SMALL first appeared in the parish register of St. Bartholomew's, Wednesbury, Staffordshire, England when his marriage to SUSANNA HAYINS on 12 September 1743 was recorded. An interesting "Examination" can be found among the records in the Parish Chest of St. Bartholomew's:

Last Will & Testament
of Thomas Small
T HOMAS SMALL was the second son born to Thomas Small and Susanna Hayins and was baptized 3 June 1745 at the Parish Church of St. Bartholomew, Wednesbury, Staffordshire, England. He was a Bricklayer by trade and lived to be 90 years old, managing not to work himself to death.
Thomas married ELIZABETH RICHARDS on 2 July 1769 at St. Bartholomew's, but their life together was all too short, for Elizabeth died four years later, probably of complications resulting from the birth of their second child, and was buried 31 May 1773.
He was married, secondly, to Ann Nightingale on 22 September 1776 at Wednesbury, but it appears that Ann too died from complications from childbirth and was buried 8 August 1785 in the parish churchyard.
Thomas made his will on 28 January 1834 and left his entire estate to his daughter Susannah Lees, then his only surviving child. He died later that year and was buried at Wednesbury 11 December 1834 - his will being proved 3 June 1835 at the Bishop's Court of Lichfield.
Children of Thomas Small and Elizabeth Richards :

  2. THOMAS SMALL was baptized the day his mother was buried, 31 May 1773, at the Parish Church of St. Bartholomew, Wednesbury and he too was soon buried on 2 June 1773.

Last Will & Testament
of John Small
  1. JOHN SMALL was baptized 27 March 1780 at the Parish Church of St. Bartholomew, Wednesbury. He was occupied early as a Gunlock Filer but at the time of his death he was said to be a Coach Harness Filer. He seems never to have married, but in his will dated 8 September 1832 he left his estate to Catherine Smith "who now resides with me as my housekeeper" and after her to their son Thomas Small Smith. John died 17 October 1832.

  2. SARAH SMALL was baptized 17 November 1782 at the Parish Church of St. Bartholomew, Wednesbury and died of Smallpox in 1784.

  3. THOMAS SMALL was baptized 29 May 1785 at the Parish Church of St. Bartholomew, Wednesbury and was buried there 31 July 1785, one week before his mother.

S USANNAH SMALL, the only daughter of Thomas Small and Elizabeth Richards was baptized 1 April 1770 at the Parish Church of St. Bartholomew, Wednesbury, Staffordshire, England. Her childhood was marked by loss, though she have been aware of only part of it. Her mother and brother died when she was three, her stepmother and halfbrother died when she was fifteen and her halfsister died of smallpox the year before. Her later life, however, was quite full, with a large family of means.
Marriage banns were read for Susannah and JOSEPH LEES on three consecutive Sundays in March 1789, and they were subsequently married 5 July 1789 at St. Bartholomew's, Wednesbury. Susannah was living on High Street, Wednesbury during the 1841 Census with her daughter Keziah and grandson Enoch.
Susannah died 21 May 1848 at Hight Street, Wednesbury. The cause of death was recorded as "Paralysis" - perhaps the result of a stroke. She was 81 years old. Ann Mealing was present at the death and letters of administration were granted to Ann, "daughter and one of the next of kin", on 10 October 1850 at the Bishop's Court of Lichfield - the estate was valued under £600.
