The Beddow name was quite common in Shropshire, even in the 16th Century, and is certainly the anglicized version of the welsh Bedw.
J OHN BEDDOW possibly belongs to the family of John Bedo and Mary Constable who were married at Wednesbury 29 May 1732. Four of their possible ten children were baptized at the parish church of St. Bartholomew, Wednesbury, Staffordshire, England between 1732 and 1752, though the record of John's baptism is not among those. Two of the missing children may be Anne, who married Thomas Malpas at Wednesbury 10 February 1750/1, and William who married Hannah Yates 9 February 1757/8 at Wednesbury. Circumstantial evidence suggests that the family may have connections to the parish of Broseley in Shropshire.
Banns of marriage between a John Beddall and SARAH PEERS were published on the 4th, 11th and 18th of January 1761/2 at Wednesbury and they were then married two days later, on the 20th, in the presence of Thomas Malpas and Alex Bunn.
The spelling of the name Beddow appears not to have been set until the next generation - spellings of Bedo, Beado, Beaddow and Beddow were used in the Wednesbury records before 1750. Beddall seems to be a variant, a mistake, or the Clerk assumed that John was speaking with a good Black Country accent and saying Beddall as Beddow. There are no baptisms recorded at Wednesbury naming a John and Sarah Beddall as parents.
John's occupation is unknown but with two sons and a grandson who were shoemakers, one is inclinded to investigate the same for him.
His wife, Sarah Beddows (sic) in the records, was buried in the churchyard of the parish church at Wednesbury 23 July 1784 and John appears to have remarried at Wednesbury 13 March 1785 to Ann Gender, in the presence of T. Blakemore. The only burial entry in the records that seems to fit is one for a John Beddow who was interred at St. Bartholomew's 4 February 1802.
Children of John Beddow and Sarah Peers :
  1. SARAH BEDDOW was baptized 20 September 1762 at the Parish Church of St. Bartholomew, Wednesbury and buried in the churchyard there 25 July 1765.

  2. LUCY BEDDOW was baptized 10 February 1765 at the Parish Church of St. Bartholomew, Wednesbury and married 7 February 1785 to Thomas Blakemore at the same place. Lucy died in 1798 and was buried at St. Bartholomew's.

Children:   ALICE, baptized 20 April 1788 at Wednesbury;   JOSEPH, baptized 1790 at Wednesbury;   LUCY, buried 1796 at Wednesbury;   JOHN, baptized 1795 and buried 1796 at Wednesbury;   JOHN, baptized 1796 at Wednesbury.

  3. JOSEPH BEDDOW was baptized 23 October 1769 at the Parish Church of St. Bartholomew, Wednesbury and married ELIZABETH TAYLOR on 7 May 1792 at the same place. He was buried 27 April 1843 in the parish churchyard.

  4. JAMES BEDDOW was baptized 26 April 1772 at the Parish Church of St. Bartholomew, Wednesbury and buried 8 January 1774 in the parish churchyard.

  5. JAMES BEDDOW was baptized 5 September 1774 at the Parish Church of St. Bartholomew, Wednesbury. There was a burial on 3 July 1780 for a James, son of John and Sarah Beddow; however, it seems clear that this James survived and died instead 25 April 1839. The burial entry was likely for his brother John.
Letters of Administration were granted at Lichfield to Joseph Beddow of Wednesbury, Shoemaker, in the case of James Beddow of Wednesbury, Victualler and Maltster, who died intestate 19 April 1839 leaving wife Elizabeth and an estate valued under £1500. Also appearing were David Lees and William Kendrick, both Coachsmiths of Wednesbury. James and Elizabeth had no surviving children, though James appears to have fathered a male child by Ann Dones, born 5 December "in the Thirty Eighth Year of the Reign of His Majesty King GEORGE the Third". The child James was baptized at Wednesbury in 1797.

  6. JOHN BEDDOW was baptized 11 September 1776 at the Parish Church of St. Bartholomew, Wednesbury. It appears that the burial entry on 3 July 1780 for a James, son of John and Sarah Beddow, should have been for John instead.

  7. ANNE BEDDOW was baptized 6 August 1779 at the Parish Church of St. Bartholomew, Wednesbury.

Last Will & Testament of Joseph Beddow J OSEPH BEDDOW was born the third child of John Beddow and Sarah Peers and baptized 23 October 1769 at the parish church of St. Bartholomew, Wednesbury, England. Joseph and ELIZABETH TAYLOR, both of the parish, were married by banns at Wednesbury 7 May 1792.

Sources, taken individually, build a contradictory picture; nevertheless, it appears that Joseph was primarily a Shoemaker until his brother James died, intestate and without issue, in April 1839.
Abstract of Administration for Estate of James Beddow

James Beddow, Victualler and Maltster, of Wednesbury, died intestate 19 April 1839 leaving wife Elizabeth. Appeared and granted administration were Joseph Beddow of Wednesbury, Shoemaker, David Lees of Wednesbury, Coachsmith, and William Kendrick of Wednesbury, Coachsmith.

As James appeared in the 1830-31 directory, Joseph then appeared in the 1839 directory and no longer as a Boot & Shoemaker.

From the 1839 Directory for Wednesbury:

Beddow, Joseph Bridge-St, Wednesbury Maltster
Beddow, Josh. Bridge-St, Wednesbury Fire Brick Maker
Beddow, J. Bridge-St, Wednesbury Cement Manufacturer

Taverns, Inns & Public Houses

Beddow, Josh. White Lion    Bridge-St, Wednesbury

Joseph himself died just four years later of "Natural Causes" on 21 April 1843 at Bridge Street, Wednesbury, aged 73 years. It was on Bridge Street that he was living at the time of the 1841 census, next door to his daughter Elizabeth Lees. His wife Elizabeth was buried at Wednesbury 3 April 1837 having died at the age of 64. Joseph's will, dated 23 December 1839, was proved at Lichfield 11 May 1843 leaving a number of properties in Darlaston and Wednesbury variously to son-in-law David Lees, daughter Hannah Beddow, grand-daughter Hannah Beddow and grand-daughter Elizabeth Foster. Joseph was buried 27 April 1843 at Wednesbury.
Children of Joseph Beddow and Elizabeth Taylor :
  1. JOHN BEDDOW was baptized at Wednesbury, Staffordshire, England on 22 April 1793 and burried in the parish churchyard 26 January 1794.

  2. SARAH BEDDOW was baptized at Wednesbury, Staffordshire, England on 25 May 1795. She was a witness to the wedding of her sister Elizabeth in 1815 and married at St. Mary's, Handsworth 5 July 1819 to Richard Foster.

Children:   ELIZABETH, baptized 20 August 1820 at Wednesbury and was mentioned in her grandfather's will of 1839;   BENJAMIN, baptized 30 March 1823 at Wednesbury but was not mentioned in his grandfather's will of 1839.

  3. ELZABETH BEDDOW was baptized at Wednesbury, Staffordshire, England on 26 December 1798 and married DAVID LEES 5 September 1815 at St. Mary's, Handsworth. She died at Wednesbury 30 March 1846.

  4. ANN BEDDOW was baptized at Wednesbury, Staffordshire, England on 23 December 1800.

  5. JOSEPH BEDDOW was baptized at Wednesbury, Staffordshire, England on 20 February 1803 and burried in the parish churchyard 30 December 1804.

  6. JOHN BEDDOW was baptized at Wednesbury, Staffordshire, England on 17 February 1805 and appears to have been married at Handsworth 11 June 1829 to Sarah Lloyd. He was listed as a Shoemaker in the record of his son James' baptism. He is likely the John Beddow who was buried at Wednesbury 9 February 1838.

Children:   HANNAH, mentioned in her grandfather's will of 1839; JAMES, baptized at Wednesbury 1 November 1835, but may have died before December 1839.

  7. MARY BEDDOW was baptized at Wednesbury, Staffordshire, England on 19 July 1810 and appears to have been married at Handsworth 13 November 1826 to Peter Ellis.

  8. HANNAH BEDDOW was baptized at Wednesbury, Staffordshire, England on 20 February 1803 and burried in the parish churchyard 9 December 1810.

  9. HANNAH BEDDOW was baptized at Wednesbury, Staffordshire, England on 3 July 1812 and probably married George Jones after December 1839 when her father named her in his will as Hannah Beddow. A Hannah and George Jones were living with Joseph Beddow when the 1841 census was enumerated and a Hannah Jones was also listed on Joseph's death certificate as present at his death.

E LIZABETH BEDDOW, was baptized 26 December 1798 at St Bartholomew's, Wednesbury, Staffordshire, England and married DAVID LEES, by banns, 5 September 1815 in the Parish of Handsworth, Staffordshire in the presence of William Duce and Sarah Beddow. She is said to have objected to the marriage of her daughter Elizabeth to Richard Davis - for marrying "beneath her station". The difference of circumstances between the Lees and Beddow families, on the one hand, and the Davis family, on the other, would have been apparent. One could also speculate that it was due to Richard's relationship to the Spittle family - at least one of whom, Jonah Spittle, was rather notorious.
Her objections must have been to their intent to marry since Elizabeth died of consumption at Bridge Street, Wednesbury on 30 March 1846, one month and a few days before they married. She was 48 years old.
