ARY ATTWOOD, widow of EDWARD SPITTLE
Butcher, died of "Old Age" 5 December 1844 at the home of her
daughter Elizabeth Gittoes, Mall End, West Bromwich, Staffordshire, England.
Her age was given as 84 years on her death certificate. Three years
earlier, according to the 1841 census, Mary and the Gittoes family were living
on High Street, Wednesbury. She was listed there as an 83 year old widow
who was born outside of Staffordshire. Mary and Edward were married, by
license, 14 January 1783 at Rowley Regis - the license most likely
required because Edward was from Wednesbury.
From the early 17th century until the
mid 20th century, many Attwood men were occupied as butchers
in the Worcestershire parishes bordering on Staffordshire, particularly
in Halesowen and Cradley, as well as the Staffordshire parish of Rowley
Regis. Because of Edward's occupation, it's reasonable to assume that
Mary belonged to that clan - perhaps he had even apprenticed with a
relative of hers.
At the parish church of Halesowen on 16 December
1759 James and Esther Attwood brought their daughter Mary to be baptized.
James Attwood married Esther Harris 1 August 1756 at Halesowen.
Complicating matters somewhat are two Mary Attwoods baptized at Rowley Regis
in 1762, though the above baptism at Halesowen better fits the ages recorded
for Mary in 1841 and 1844.
