Riveting Aids for Homebuilders

This Military Specification
is provided for reference by Gil Alexander (and, of course, the US Army
Missile Command). The HTML version was scanned by Brian Yablon from
a ratty photocopy of a microfiche of a typewritten document and (miraculously)
converted to text using OCR technology. The figures in the original
were too poor to scan, and were thus redrawn by Brian to restore their
original integrity. In the original copy, things that changed from
MIL-R-46196 to MIL-R-46196A were marked with asterisks in the margins (per
section 6.4). Asterisks are not present in this web page; but they
appeared in the original adjacent to the following sections: Specifications,
Federal; Standards; 3.2.1.3 and 3.2.1.4. Internal document hyperlinks
were then added by Gil Alexander.
RV builders and other homebuilders using
flush rivets, check out this graphic showing how to measure the height
of the shop head of a flush rivet. Errors that reduce the strength
of your joints are easy to make here if you use a rivet guage that measures
from the surface of the skin.
