FAVORITE MEMORIES

Ron:             Chasing bear out of camp
Darlene:        Hardly any bugs
Sheryl:         Seeing the bear and seeing the moose turds
Stephanie:    Seeing the bear and seeing the moose droppings
Grant:           Perfect paddling weather
Kathy:           Lightning that lit up the camp (sans thunder)

BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENTS

Ron:             Going back for the permit
Darlene:        All the rain
Sheryl:          Paddling all the way back for the permit
Stephanie:    Not seeing an actual moose
Grant:           Neither the time nor the energy to go fishing
Kathy:           Inability to have even 1/2 hour paddling without encountering other canoeists

Canoe order:          Ron and Stephanie; Sheryl, Darlene and Kandy (the Golden Retriever); Kathy and Grant.

Itinerary:

Saturday: Camped at the Trail’s End campsite off the Gunflint Trail.

Sunday: Put into Gull Lake and took the Saganaga Corridor north (Ron and Sheryl 3 times!, when they had to go back for the permits). Paddled through the main portion of Saganaga Lake until reached American Point. Rounded the point and continued down the shoreline till found a desirable campsite.

Monday: Crossed Swamp Portage and Monument Portage and continued down Otterback Lake until the portage into Knife Lake. Located a campsite just around the corner from the whitewater.

Tuesday: Continued down Knife Lake till crossed between 2 islands (and had to portage the canoes due to the low water levels) and began the return 1/2 of the trip through South Arm Knife Lake. Unable to find any open campsites here, so did the 25-rod portage into Eddy Lake (past the scenic Eddy Falls) and raced with several other canoeists for the only remaining campsite on the lake. During our lunch, had a surprise visit from a black bear.

Wednesday: 3 quick 15-rod portages (passed through Jenny and Annie Lakes) then a long stretch through Ogishkemuncie Lake with a 38-rod portage into Kingfisher Lake immediately followed by a 25-rod portage into Jasper Lake, where Steph selected the campsite.

Thursday: Began with a 45-rod portage into Alpine Lake and, our last portage, 20-rods into Seagull Lake. Paddled all the way across the lake to the river entrance, and out of the landing at the other end of the Trails End campground. Stopped in Grand Marais for the traditional Dairy Queen treats.
