Vibe Show, 6/8/98
Well, to start, it was drama getting into this
performance. Only the very first person
in line was able to get in, which left the 100+ other people waiting there
(most of whom I got to know while waiting out there 3+ hours until a friend
used his connection in the TV industry to get into the show.
The reason for the problems getting into the show, unknown
to the audience until midway into the taping, was that this show was to be the
very last one taped, and Sinbad, the host, wanted to go out with a bang, in my
opinion.
Most of the crew of the show came to the audience and took
all the seats for their family and friends, which ate up all of the available
tickets to the real fans. Oh well...
Once we got in, the show moved along very quick, using one
take for each of the songs.
The show was almost exactly as it aired on TV, with these
songs performed:
- Let's Work
- Delirious
- Free [GCS with Prince]
- Sweet Thing
- Just Be My Lady / Spoon / The One (one verse of each)
And after the show, a 15-minute version of Everyday People
featuring Prince, Larry and the whole band was played. We thought they were going to play one more
song for us, but that was it.
One thing that did not show in the airing was that as Prince
and Larry babbled on about religion, the producer of the show was freaking out
from the side of the stage, and was making hand gestures for Sinbad to regain
control of the conversation and end the talk about religion. Instead though, Sinbad led them to talk more
about it, and smiled wickedly towards the producer. I mean, what was he going to do, fire Sinbad? :)
Anyway, after the show, it was hard exiting past all of my friends who didn't get into the taping and were still waiting outside, while everyone was gushing from just seeing Prince as they exited. Damn shame...
