John Alan Gerhold holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in composition from The University of British Columbia where he studied composition with Stephen Chatman and theory with Wallace Berry.  His other degrees include the Master of Fine Arts and Bachelor of Music (Magna cum laude) in composition and piano, respectively, from the University of California, Irvine.  Dr. Gerhold’s fellowships and awards include the Izaak Walton Killam Memorial Pre-Doctoral Fellowship, one of the highest honors of its kind awarded in Canada, the Regents Fellowship, and the California Graduate Fellowship.

Dr. Gerhold has composed commissions for the Bakersfield Symphony Orchestra (Huddled Masses: Deconstructions on an Immigrant Theme commemorating the Bakersfield Centennial in 1998), the Irvine Symphony Orchestra (Expansion Explosion commemorating the Orange County Centennial in 1988), and the Orange County Four Seasons Orchestra (Presto for piano, strings and percussion).  His oeuvre also includes works for a variety of smaller media including piano solo, choir (with and without piano), and chamber groups.  More recently, he has combined his research interest in theory pedagogy with composition to create Peaches™ (Pieces that Teach), a series of works that teach theory concepts through clever combinations of texts and settings.

Originally from Fullerton, California, Dr. Gerhold has lived in Bakersfield with his wife and two daughters since his appointment in 1994 to the music faculty at Bakersfield College where he is a Professor of Music teaching all levels of theory and ear-training.
