The Mad Mappers of 1947-48. 338th Reconnaissance Squadron (VLR) Mapping

When I joined the 338th on Guam in March 1947 the squadron was based at Harmon Field in the area once occupied by the 3rd Photo, the B-29 outfit known as the Photographers of Japan during WW2. The Foto Cabana was about the only place to relax after work. The 338th, attached to the 20th AF, was in the process of moving to the Admiralty Islands.

A touring USO troup put on quite a show at Harmon Field for the troops. I lucked out and drew the assignment to record the event. There are other pix of male performers but they weren't as lovely.

Steading the nerves at the Foto Cabana bar after the USO show.

One of the last celebrations at the Foto Cabana. Most of the squadron was flown to the new base at Los Negros. In June 1947, about a dozen, including me, made the six-day trip to Los Negros by LST with squadron equipment and supplies. We had a brush with a tropical storm en route. Our task was to provide 24-hour security.

Female dance companions were hard to come by at the Foto Cabana but some of the Mappers managed. Who led? Who cares?
