Old time bloggin'. What a delight to discover when I redid the counts for the ageless project that there are now two sites by members of the G.I. generation. Without further ado, here they are: http://bastion.diaryland.com & http://wegads.blogspot.com.

At this rate, we're sure to be doomed! Well, since my last post the DOW has gone up considerably, the stats on job growth and unemployment for November look good, in part because of the recent hurricanes, and third-quarter GDP growth was reported at a very healthy 4.3%, despite those disasters. This just shows the amazing strength and resilience of the American economy.

And yet, the public mood on the U.S. economy tends to be pessimistic, not optimistic - everyone is waiting for the bursting of the housing bubble, or the credit bubble, or the oil bubble (did I miss any?) Contrast that with the confidence the nation had in its prosperity and expanding infrastructure in the 50s and 60s - so much confidence that we instituted huge social welfare programs starting late in the 60s that we later came to regret.

And on that note, we're deep into Reagan Revolution territory now. Whatever President Bush said when he got around to noticing hurricane Katrina had done the damage it had, there hasn't been much follow through on the promises. Just as the residents of New Orleans made clear at the outset, it's every man for himself in America in the 2000s. The biggest economy ever but no will to marshall it for civic purpose.
