Generations at war. International events dominating the news means fewer stories with a generational slant. It seems the ones being published are always about the young (Millennial) generation's reactions to the current war in Iraq. Today's article by Brooke Bunch in Chillicothe Gazette has "Generation X" in its title, but is filled with interviews with Millennials. It's as though older generations understand how important their reaction is for the future of this country. Where are the articles on how the Silent stewardship of the U.S. military is behind our current doctrine of "shock and awe" followed by truckloads of food aid? What about the stories on the professional warrior Gen-Xers and their Boomer commanders, who are fighting the war? What about articles on how the second Bush adminstration's snubbing of the U.N., the international organization which the first Bush administration heeded in the 1991 Iraq war, reflects the transfer of executive power from the G.I. to the Boom generation? Gone is the realpolitik of the Cold War finale G.I. leadership; in its place, a Boomer President exhibiting a classic Boomer trait: supreme confidence in his own judgement. Thanks to all who participated in the survey. The turning survey has stopped taking votes. It will start up again in another six months, and so forth each year. Thus there will be an annual snapshot of the perception of the current turning by visitors to this site. Presumably it would eventually reach something like "5% third turning, 85% fourth turning, 10% there are no such things as turnings." Well, it's ambitious but that's the general plan.
