Gene Catlow's Early Stuff

Since so many folks want to know...

.. you're about to see some of my art I created before I gained all my latter-day notoriety. NOT my very, very early art... that's locked away far from prying eyes forever. No, this will be some of the things I drew that I myself can stand to look at... <:)

Mangy Mutt One of the things I began to do when I finally allowed my OWN style to emerge was to make little iconographic pictures of the noteworthy events in my life. I would often create certain representative characters for the categories that such events would fall into. For the events pertaining to my experiences with my cars, I used a disheveled little dog from one of my stories, Mangy Mutt. A citizen of a faraway city called Dilapidation, where everything is worn, used, and pretty much beat-up. And no, I don't actually own a Studebaker. (But the car I do own is pretty old, though. <:) )

These images range between 1994-96. All were drawn in my Morilla Clipper Sketch books along with many other little pictures during those years.

  • 2-23-94 My key got stuck in the lock - I was able to get it out without having to take it to the shop! :)
  • 1-9-95 About the most constant problem I've ever had with my car has been with the cooling system. The heater core keeps leaking - and to keep all my coolant from leaking out (INSIDE THE CAR!) I have to do an emergency reroute to the coolant hoses... :P
  • 1-20-95 I had a guy accidentally back into my left front turn signal and break it. He brought me a brand new one - and I didn't even know who he was! Who would have imagined that there really were such honest people? ^_^
  • 9-11-95 Yep, had to reroute the hoses once again! :/
  • 11-3-95 This time it was the water pump!
  • 1-3-96 My starter solenoid had to be replaced - but I accidentally bought the wrong model... amd I lost the receipt. :/ But the parts dealer remembered that I'd bought it, and let me return it wiithout the receipt. :)
