Susannah Hunsberger (1748-1834)Staats Overholt (1742-1820)The ancestral line for Susannah is little known. This seems surprising considering the size of the Hunsberger population in the U.S.A. and Canada, the many well-documented family lines and the wealth of information available from the Hunsberger Family Association. Susannah was born in Bucks County, PA, a daughter in a family of seven children. What is known about this family line is developed from the Will of her older brother, Christian Hunsberger who died in 1814 in Lower Milford Twp., Bucks Cty. PA. The will names his widow and siblings. The parents of this family is unknown. In the will, Christian is called Hunsberry.
The brothers and sisters mentioned in the will are:
Susannah Hunsberger 1748-1834 m. Staats Overholt Christian Hunsberger ?-1814 m. Magdalene Overholt Peter Hunsberger Abraham Hunsberger John Hunsberger ?-1834 m. Mollie ? Maria Hunsberger m. ? Richards Sarah Hunsberger ?-1837 m. Christian Bealer Three of the Hunsberger siblings, Susanna, John and Abraham, were among the earliest of the Pennsylvania German Mennonites to migrate to Canada. Susanna went with her husband, Staats Overholt and family in 1786. John and Abraham traveled together with their families in 1799. These related families are identified as being in Canada before 1820 in the legal documents drawn up giving power of attorney to Samuel Moyer to travel to Pennsylvania and represent them as heirs in the probate of Christian's will. Other Hunsbergers followed. They were probably related, but this is not known at this time. Among these were Abraham (1764-1841), who arrived in Canada in 1800, and Christian with his wife, Agnes (Meyer) and family. Within a few years, several Hunsberger families resided in Clinton Township. This is borne out by the many Hunsberger names found in the 1828 Census of Clinton.
