John Dean (1754 - 1827)

Margaret Flock (1753 - 1839)

About 1800 John and Margaret traveled from Morris County, New Jersey to Canada. It is not known if John was a British loyalist. It is probable that he emigrated to Canada primarily to acquire land for farming, since the British (Canadian) government was actively recruiting experienced farmers to homestead the newly opened Niagara Peninsula, known then as Upper Canada.

They settled on Lot 26, Concession VI in Gainesboro Township of Lincoln County. Gainsborough and Caister Townships, in the southwestern part of Lincoln County, Ontario are the only townships inland from Lake Ontario. While denied water communication in the pioneer years, the area was laced with Indian trails and numerous streams which allowed the early pioneers access to their new lands. Many of the trails followed stream courses and had been used by Indian tribes for years as portage routes between Lakes Ontario and Erie.

John and Margaret lived to an advanced age and are buried in St. Ann's churchyard, as are several of their children.

The probable children of John and Margaret were all born in New Jersery:

Samuel Dean 1779-1841 m. Ruth Howell
Mary Dean 1782-1864 m. Henry Snyder
Philip Dean 1787-? m. Catherine Book
Elizabeth Dean 1787-1872 m. Joseph Snyder
    David Dean 1790-1861 m. Cornelia ?
Barbara Dean 1791-1861 m. John Kennedy
    Andrew Dean 1796-1841

The closeness of the Clinton community is well shown by the marriages between the Dean and Snyder families. Here, two sisters (Mary and Elizabeth Dean) married two brothers (Henry and Joseph Snyder).

In particular, note that Samuel Dean and Ruth Howell (above) were the parents of Samuel Dean and Garret Dean. These two sons married, respectively, Caroline Singer and Hannah Singer, daughters of pioneer John Singer, the progenitor of the Singer family.
