
Rev. George Rutledge Palmer

Enterprise, Fl. George was an ordained minister and tried to enlist in the
Illinois
Infantry from Fulton Co. but the ranks of Illinois at the time were full.
With the
help of the Secretary of War he was able to join the 10th Missouri Infantry
as a
chaplain / captain. Special mention was made by his commanding officer to
the
hdqrs. of the 10th regiment on Sep. 20, 1862 for his service on the field
attending
to and removing the wounded. In 1863 George, carring out his service without
sleep for 48 hours straight and with only a handful of dried corn to eat,
became
deathly ill. Due to his illness he was given a honarable discharge that same
year.
George also is said to have been in the 24th Mo. Infantry at some time and
had
his horse shot out from under him on three seperate occasions, wounding himself
once on the horn of the saddle.
