Below is a photo album containing pictures of some of our dogs that I have acquired through rescue efforts. (In addition, don't miss our special page devoted to Australian Shepherds and Chinese Cresteds)

Greta
Greta, a purebred Doberman Pinscher, is about seven years old and has been with us since a former student's mom gave her to us as a six week old pup. She was a tiny skinny little thing, that was not abe to fight her way to the food dish because her litter mates bullied her, and no one held out much hope of her surviving. But she did and now she is part of the Gemini Farm gang.

Greta spends most of her time holding things in place. In this photo she is busy keeping the couch where it should be, with help from Bob the Manx cat. At night she works hard at making sure the bed doesn't float away. When not snoozing Greta is the official greeter and loves everyone. She leaves the guard duty to others in the house, who seem to enjoy that activity much more than she does

Gracie (and I)

This is Gracie...a Golden Retriever and Great Pyrenees mix. She is five and a half months old and about 60 lbs in this photo. And that's me, underneath Gracie, providing the lap that she is obviously quite fond of. Some lap dog, eh ?

Bella (and Julio)

My wonderful husband Julio and his favorite rescue...Bella the Rottweiler. Bella belonged to a co worker who tried to place her privately but was not satisfied with any of the people who applied to purchase her. She asked us if we would take her...and we did. Bella is epileptic but is controlled quite easily by daily meds. She is a real sweetheart.

Lucky
Lucky came to us about six years ago. We found him in the middle of one of our country roads dodging cars. Lucky didn't seem to understand that we were trying to save him from the whizzing cars and every time we tried to touch him he tried to bite. I finally dropped a noose over his head and took him home.

We tried to find his owner and instead found a very sad and infuriating story. Lucky had been adopted by from a local shelter (Stray Haven in Waverly, NY) by a family with children. We discovered this because the shelter tatoos all their rescues. When we talked with the shelter they gave us the name of the family. Of course we thought the dog had somehow gotten lost as he was over ten miles from his home. His owner said she didn't know where he dog was. Then she said he was lost....and then she admitted she didn't want him any more because he bit her children. I could hear the children in the backgound (on the phone)....screaming and fighting. I suspect he was not happy in the middle of that mess.

So we kept Lucky....not because we wanted to but because he was really a nasty little guy ....with a huge attitude problem. He was not suitable as a family dog and really disliked children. Gee, wonder why??? Lucky has mellowed in his old age but in his younger days we never knew when he would be grumpy. He didn't like being told what to do, didn't like having a leash put on him, didn't like going into a crate, basically didn't like much of anything unless it was his idea. Lucky is what is called a dominant dog, and I am what is often called an 'alpha bitch'. Our life together has been one power struggle after another, but we love each other. Lucky's attitude prevented his adoption. So instead, he bacame a part of the Gemini farm fur family. We are pretty sure he is part Corgi, but we often wonder if he is also part mule....based on how stubborn he is.

"If you pick up a starving dog and make him prosperous, he will not bite you. This is the principal difference between a dog and a man." Mark Twain

Diablo

My name is Diablo and I live at Gemini Farm because no one wanted to adopt me. I'm a 10 year old Pomeranian with a summer hair cut. People say I have a bad attitude I like to bite people but I think I'm cool. As you can see, today I am supervising barn chores.

"We give dogs time we can spare, space we can spare and love we can spare. And in return, dogs give us their all. It's the best deal man has ever made." M.Facklam

Maude
Maude was found on our front porch one summer day about four years ago. She was skinny and shy and within a week came down with parvovirus. A week of intensive care at our vet's office and she was back home. Our goal was to place her in a loving home but her pit bull background discouraged everyone who was interested. Ultimately, we decided to keep her and she has taken over one of the chairs in the living room.

Remember, just because a dog may be unwanted by others, doesn't mean that, if given a chance, it can't become a loved and loving member of your household. If dogs, could talk, you might hear something like this poem, "Adopting Older Dogs" from the lucky dog that you or a friend have rescued from a shelter.

"Nobody can fully understand the meaning of love until he's owned a dog. He can show you more honest affection with a flick of his tail than a man can gather through a lifetime of handshakes." unknown
