were very ‘faddish’ and of generally very narrow stripes

Various knitted, buckled &/or flat elastic styles used, not the round elastic garters sold by Civil War merchants

Broad square or very slightly rounded at toe
Chisel shape, not rounded up at toe
Styles:
Low heeled, ankle high leather or leather and heavy wool ‘gaiters’ typical
for outdoor wear
side elastic gussets or front or side laces
No heel or extremely low heel slip-on shoes for indoor wear, balls, etc.,
Ankle high boots of delicate material such as silk also worn for dancing,
etc.
