We wean our foals at 4 months, and the pick-up date we arrange with you - the buyer- is scheduled for 4 months and 2 weeks of age. We like to wean them here with a buddy, and during that time ensure that all of their ground manners are in place. Our foals will halter, lead, tie, and be gentle for grooming, as well as pick up their feet. We give a 5 way shot, probotics, and they are UTD on worming and trims (if necessary); plus, they will have had their first bridle path clipped.

However, as with all babies, you will need to handle them and reinforce what we have taught them once you get them home - if you turn them out in a pen or pasture for weeks at a time, they will forget how they are supposed to behave. If this is your first youngster, there are lots of great books and videos out there that can give you some wonderful training tips.

We do NOT supply a coggins or health papers on any horse younger then 6 months, or one who is purchased prior to weaning. These are the buyers responsibility, and a coggins is required for any horse to leave the ranch, as well as health papers to cross state lines. If your weanling will be crossing international borders, you will also need to find out what paperwork the accepting country requires as well.

Below, I have listed the three vets who service our area.  One of them is our regular ranch vet, as all he does is horses and cattle, but all are qualified and competent to do your paperwork. We also recommend that you check with your local vet to see if there are any shots that he or she recommends for your area beyound the 5 way that we give. Since you will have to contact one of our local vets to make arrangements for payment and service for your foal, that would be a great time for him/her to give those shots so the weanlings immune system will have had time to adjust prior to transport.

Remember, a coggins takes 10 - 14 days for the paperwork to be returned, to us, while health papers are person specific, and are only good for 30 days; so you will need to coordinate the vet visit to coincide timely with your foal's pick-up date. Please have the coggins paperwork sent to our address, and we will create a package with this, the registration, health papers, pedigree information, etc., that will be ready for you to take on your trip home.

Once you have made arrangements with the vet of your choice, have them contact us (423-364-4495 or 423-240-7919) to arrange a time to come to the ranch for the blood work and exam, and we will be sure to be there for them. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to call us - we want this transition to be as smooth as possible for the weanling, and his or her new owners...

Enjoy your new foal and please remember to keep us updated with pictures and progress reports - we have been so fortunate in that most of the horses and weanlings we have sold have gone to owners that love to brag on them, and we never get tired of hearing how well they are doing or seeing how much they have grown!
