After the second tunnel, which was a bit tricky to find and get through, but only a quarter-mile long, we hiked a minute or two down to the headwaters of the Hanalei River. This is the only way to get within miles of this part of the river. There is a third tunnel that according to the Ultimate Kauai Guidebook takes you to a remarkable spot much tighter into the ridgeline seen in the distance. Due to a late start, we got to this spot at 3:30 pm. We would have to haul ass to make it out of the jungle by dark. The third tunnel would have to wait until next trip.
