Soule type rear sights (built by Montana Vintage Arms)

You may be surprised to find out the cost of a good tang sight. What is the difference between an Italian "Creedmore" sight costing about $50, and a high quality sight that costs $300? A high quality sight is "repeatable", meaning that you can shoot the rifle at 500 meters, change the sight setting for 200 meters, and when you go back to the 500 meter setting, the rifle will hit to point of aim. A cheap sight will not do this. A quality sight will also allow for precision movement in elevation through the use of a vernier scale. If you need to move the sight up just one Minute of Angle at 500 meters a good sight will do it, a cheap sight makes you "turn and guess". The better sights allow precise windage adjustments also, though windage is sometimes changed on the front sight.
