The front sight is usually hooded, though a blade is sometimes seen. Usually the front sight under that hood is an aperture but others use a post or crosshairs. With removable sight inserts, you can change between styles depending on range conditions. A level on the front sight can prevent canting the rifle, which would cause a miss at the longer ranges.
