Pictures of Some Houses in Nantucket, MA
October 1999

On a trip to Nantucket I tried to find as many houses as I could which were associated with Francis Barnard born Nantucket 1747.

Jethro Coffin house – "Oldest House" Sunset Hill

Francis Barnard is descended two ways from Tristram Coffin – via Tristram’s sons James and John. Peter was a brother of James and John. Jethro Coffin was the son of Peter so the Jethro Coffin House was built/owned starting in say 1686 by the nephew of our James and John Coffin. We might assume James and John had occasion to visited their nephew in this house from time to time.

85 Main Street at Winter Street

This house has had many early owners, but Francis Barnard (1718-1800) purchased it in 1762 and sold it in 1765. Note 1765 is also the year Francis’ wife Elizabeth Macy Barnard died. We can presume Francis and his family lived in it for about 3 years. Perhaps Elizabeth died there. Francis Barnard and Elizabeth Macy Barnard are the parents of Francis Barnard (1747- ).

In the 1760’s the house was smaller. When Barnard owned it, the part to the left of the door would not have existed. It was then a ‘half house’, which was later enlarged to a ‘full house’.

Nathaniel Macy House – Liberty Street and Walnut Street

This home was built in 1720's and occupied by Nathaniel Macy in about 1745.  Elizabeth Macy (1722-1765) was the mother of Francis Barnard (1747- ). Nathaniel Macy was Elizabeth's brother; both children of Thomas Macy (1687-1759). The house is open to the public in the summer.

Thomas Macy House – Tattle Court off Fair Street

This house is on Fish Lot #19 which was assigned to Thomas Macy. The house which may have been moved here and be older, was occupied by Thomas Macy in say 1720’s. I infer that the Thomas Macy is the 1687-1759 one who married Deborah Coffin and who is the father of Elizabeth Macy (1722-1765) but I have not confirmed this. That is, this is the "Thomas Macy House" but I am not 100% sure it is my Thomas Macy.

The lean-to in the foreground of the picture is a later addition. The original house is the part in the back of the picture.
