When we think of mental health, two different
aspects come to mind: 1) stress management; and 2) emotional balance.
Although there is a relationship between the two, we need to differentiate
between them. Someone can be quite tense and overly sensitive, yet
still be emotionally balanced - at least this is my suggestion to
you.
Stress management involves the vital body; emotional balance involves
the emotional body. These are two separate sheaths in the human being;
however, they are usually treated together under the designation of
mental health.
A strong vital body gives individuals the energy and
ability to creatively project themselves into any environment. When
a person wants to project his energy onto the environment in a way
which will bring success, influence, popularity, and a good reputation,
then he will use one of the eight syles for doing so.
The vital body, subtler than the physical body, coordinates
the flow of energy through the physiology so that we feel comfortable.
This body also has an effect on our ability to recover quickly
and easily from physical illness. When our energy body comes under
stress and tension, then we suffer the stress syndrome: chronic fatigue,
insomnia, tension, anxiety etc. Stress can come from physical imbalances
and Ayurveda exists to take care of that end of the spectrum. Stress
can also come from psychological and environmental factors. Stress
can be managed effectively through massage, geomancy (feng shui),
yoga, tai chi etc.
The best way of dealing with negative emotions, which
are most damaging to our longevity, is through our spiritual nature.
If we can maximize our spiritual potential, then emotional health
follows automatically. Negative emotions are undue attachments to
some aspect of our life, and true spiritual training nips these attachments
in the bud.
