Modern Ayurveda classifies symptoms according to the three doshas or
the disease itself. It sees imbalances as relating to Vata, Pitta or
Kapha. Ancient Ayurveda places great emphasis on seven primal disease
tendencies governed by the seven planets. These disease tendencies correspond
to the qualities of the doshas (heat, cold, light, heavy, dry, oily,
mixed) and therefore the diagnosis can be much more specific. For instance,
rather than saying - Kapha is out of balance - the Ancient Ayurveda
practitioner can see if it is the heavy, oily or cold quality of Kapha
that is causing the problem. Since each quality (disease tendency) has
a specific connection to organs, meridians, bodily tissue, endocrine
system, and theraputics, a much more effective treatment program can
be used.
Modern Ayurveda believes that your constitution (body type) will determine
what kinds of imbalances you are prone to, and that by following the
recommendations for your constitution you will be doing the maximum
to protect your health. Ancient Ayurveda suggests that everyone has
a primal disease tendency that takes precedence over their constitution.
Also, our health is determined by more than physical factors. Happiness
in career, relationships, an understanding of our spiritual nature,
and the capacity to sustain a meaningful life purpose play a large part
in determining how healthy we will be. Frustration in any of these areas
will in some way eventually affect the physical body. In my consultations
a person's individual tendencies in each of these areas is discovered
and I give suggestions on how to capitalize on the strengths that are
present, and how to strengthen any weaknesses.
