We make miniature objects and jewelry using 18kt. gold and cloisonné enamel. Most pieces are narrative and often explore surprising or emotional subjects. Many of the pieces have detailed cloisonné
fired to both the front and back of
the same sheet of gold.
We have developed this double-sided technique over the last twenty five
years. Besides the technical challenge, it enables us to present a dialogue
between the two sides. For several years we've used varying heights of 24kt. gold wire to make portions of the image appear to float or recede within the layers of transparent enamel, suggesting
a more three dimensional space.
By working in a miniature scale we are trying to enhance the notion of
intimacy and force the viewer to examine the piece from a very
close range. We hope this close focus will help to invite the viewer
into the image.

The Enamel Process
Enameling in its simplest form is the fusing of glass to
metal at high temperatures. Craftsmen have used enamel for its intrinsic qualities of hardness, brightness and permanence,
and have taken advantage of its elusiveness and mutability to suggest among other things, precious stones, filigree inlay
work, stained glass and even painting.
In cloisonné ,ribbons of gold wire are attached to a metal base to form cells. Colors of ground enamel
are inlaid into the cells and fired at 1500 degrees in successive layers until they are nearly level with the top of the wires.
The whole piece is then ground to a single level, leaving the design defined by thin wires embedded in the enamel.
