This page covers one section of the FAQ. For a list of all topics see the main FAQ page.
The web interface is very easy to use once you set up an
archive password as described here.
From the archive web page, first click any monthly archive
link, or the search link. If you have not set up automatic
logins from your computer (see below) you will then see a Login
Required page.
If you have never set up an archive password, you will need
to set one. Here's how:
On the password page, enter the exact email address under
which you subscribed to the list (just the email address,
not your name), and enter the password you want in both
password boxes.
Click the "Register password" button.
The server will send you an email to confirm your password
(this prevents someone else from setting it). Reply to
this email with a single-line message which simply says:
Do not use a clickable web link for confirmation if that
is offered in the email from the server. The web
confirmation links always appear to work, but sometimes do
not, and if that happens you won't be able to access the
archives. Send the OK response by email instead.
Once you have a password for the archives, fill in your email
address and archive password in the appropriate boxes on
the login page and click the Login button. If you instead
select "Login and save my password in a 'cookie'" then your
archive password will be saved on your computer and you will
not have to repeat this step each time you access the archives.
Once you have logged in you can access the archives month by
month, or search them as described below.
If you close your web browser and then restart it and go back
to the archives you will have to log in again, unless you
selected "Login and save my password in a 'cookie'" as
described above.
Note that when you set up the password and try to log in to the
archives, you MUST use the EXACT email address with which you
subscribed to the list. For example, if you are on the list as
ratonmickey@aol.com and you have another email address,
rmickey31@aol.com, which goes to the same mailbox, you must use
the first address to set up your password and access the
archives. The list server has no way of knowing that these
addresses are equivalent; if you use the wrong one the server
will allow you to set up your password, but you will not be
able to access the archives once the password is set up.
Passwords for the list archives are actually not just for
Guatemala-Adopt but for all lists at listserv.icors.org. If
you are or become a member of other lists hosted at ICORS,
you must use the same password for all lists, and you only need
to set it up once.
First, write a message to listserv@listserv.icors.org. Be
sure to turn off any signature you normally use. In the body
of the message include the single line:
Wait for a confirmation request to arrive in your email (it
normally comes in a few minutes) and follow the instructions to
send a one-line OK command to confirm the password reset by
email (do not use a web link for confirmation if that is
offered).
Then go to the archives and set up a new password as described
above.
The search software is quite sophisticated and allows you to
search by subject, author, date, and anything from simple text
to very complex combinations of words and phrases found in the
message text. The various links on the search page ("Search
for", "subject", "author's address", "date/time", etc.) lead
you to help which explains what you can put in each of the
search fields.
When you do a search you will get an index of the messages that
matched. If you did a text search this will be followed by a
short excerpt from each message showing the matching text. You
can click the message number at the left side of the index, or
the heading of each excerpt, to see the full message text.
Buttons at the top of the message display screen let you move
through the archives or reply as well (on most systems if you
let your mouse pointer hover over a button you will see a small
tip as to what it does).
Also, they may NEVER be used to accumulate addresses for any
form of electronic mail or email list.
What's in the archives?
The archives are a complete collection of all messages posted
to the list since it was set up in May of 1997, to the present.
As of January, 2006 there were close to 40,000 messages in the
archives.
Who can read them?
Anyone who joins the list can read them. For all practical
purposes this means the archives are public, since anyone who
provides their name and email address can join the list.
How do I read the archives?
You can access the list archives via a web interface, available
at:
http://listserv.icors.org/archives/guatemala-adopt.html
Click the "get a new LISTSERV password first" link.

What if I forget my password?
This is easy to fix.

How do I search the archives?
Once you can see the archives (i.e. after setting up the
password if necessary), use the "Search the archives" link on
the main archives page to do a search.
I'm a journalist, researcher, or advocate and I want to learn about
Guatemalan adoption from reading the list archives. How can I do
that?
Our firm policy is that the Guatemala-Adopt Archives are for
use ONLY by individual list members with a purely personal
interest in previous discussions, or by the list owners. They
are NOT AVAILABLE for use by journalists, advocates, academic
researchers, and other similar users without the prior,
explicit permission of the list owners.
