"What would service dogs and Asperger's Syndrome have to do with each other?" is probably the first question you are asking yourself. Well, they have a lot to do with each other; it is just that most people have a conception that a service dog is a Seeing Eye dog, or a therapy dog that visits nursing homes and hospitals. It is true that some service dogs do that kind of work, but not all of them.

The kind of service dog I am talking about is a dog that provides an Aspie with emotional support and companionship, and helps them communicate better. It helps take the focus off the Aspie so they don't feel so alone in this very hostile world. Some people would call the dog a companion animal, but the law doesn't recognize companion animals in the same way it does a service dog. I guess you might say that what we need is a service dog that provides companionship.

This is an effort at bringing together people and information about service dogs assisting those on the autistic spectrum. We are not professional therapists or doctors, but rather Aspies and Auties who are trainers and owners of service dogs who assist us with this, or others who are interested in this new application of this work. So that makes us an odd beast-a support group for Aspies/Auties who are service dog owners!

This is a cyber 'kitchen table' in our comfy kitchen,where folks with disabilities-physical,mental and emotional- partnered with Service and Emotional Support Animals can pull up a chair,and sit and visit with others who are interested in these wonderful animals.This also is the 'new home' of DePorres Dogs For Autism,same owners,blending the two groups together for the benifit of all of us.
